TomTom XL 335S: mostly the same, but slightly cheaper

Maps cost money, people — and if you’re TomTom and you’re trying to shave a couple bucks off your latest nav unit, you can do it by leaving some out. Like, say, maps of Mexico. That’s really the only difference we see between the $239 XL 335S announced today and the $249 XL340S announced back in April — both have 4.3-inch touchscreens and the usual Map Share, IQ Routes, and Advanced Lane Guidance features, but the new kid won’t go south of the border. We’d spring for the extra peace of mind, honestly — but if you’re willing to live dangerously, the 335S is on sale now.

TomTom Introduces TomTom XL 335S GPS

TomTom has unveiled the TomTom XL 335S, a 4.3-inch touch screen model featuring text-to-speech capability and Advanced Lane Guidance for $239.95, in what could be a further refinement of the company’s Editors’ Choice-winning TomTom One 140-S.

The XL 335S hooks into TomTom’s IQ Routes technology, which adapts to the driving experiences of millions of TomTom users worldwide when calculating directions. It also features Advanced Lance Guidance, which depicts highway interchanges and exit ramps with lane-specific visual directions.

The XL 335S also includes U.S. and Canadian maps, spoken street names, seven million points of interest, and TomTom’s Fold and Go EasyPort mount. No word yet on a release date.

California Cool Cars regs put the kibosh on radio, cellphone, and GPS reception

We’ve seen plenty of tech over the years meant to mitigate our destruction of the environment — from greener autos to Grateful Dead-themed cellphones — most of which don’t really ask us to tone down our consumer impulses all that much. But how about these new “Cool Cars” regulations recently adopted by the California Air Resources Board? By the year 2016, all autos sold in the state must have windows that prevent 60 percent of the sun’s energy from entering the vehicle. To achieve this, windows are given a coat of glazing that contains microscopic specs of reflective metal oxide — which will seriously hamper reception for your GPS, cellphone, and (this is of special interest to Engadget readers) white collar criminal-style work release ankle bracelet. As you can imagine, companies like Garmin are fuming — although we suppose that if they play this right they can make a killing in the external car antenna business. It just goes to show you — when it comes to environmental catastrophe, everyone’s a victim.

We like it when GPS is feeding us information, telling us when traffic is causing a problem and indicating when a bridge is out so that we can warm up our voices ahead of all the hootin’ and a hollerin’ required for our General Lee replica to clear the gap. However, we’re not too keen on the All-Seeing Eye aspect of GPS, and that’s what we’re fearing in Ford’s latest research. The company gave a $120,000 grant to the Auburn University’s GPS and Vehicle Dynamics Laboratory to look into using GPS for accident prevention, and while results won’t be unveiled until later this week, descriptions of “an early warning system that detects when a vehicle is about to lose control” and then tweaks vehicle traction and stability control settings based on the speed of the car and the severity of upcoming bends sounds a half-step away from the auto-braking assist in Gran Turismo. Or, perhaps that’s just Ford-speak for an Aspid-like system for optimizing suspension based on road twistiness. Given that Ford no longer makes a car designed for going around corners quickly, we find that unlikely.

Update: Wes Sherwood from Ford took the time to comment, indicating that “wide-reaching privacy laws prevent the type of monitoring suggested in this post.” That’s very good to hear. Still no word on when the Mustang will get independent rear suspension, though.

TomTom iPhone Car Kit Hits UK Apple Store

TomTom’s Car Kit for iPhone has returned to the UK Apple Store, according to Engadget, with a shipping time of 1-2 weeks. That means it’s probably going to hit the U.S. very soon.

Should you be excited? I wouldn’t be. There was plenty of back and forth over just what TomTom was including in the package. Unfortunately, it turns out not much, as a disclaimer now spells out quite clearly on the UK store site:

The TomTom app for iPhone is not included with the TomTom Car Kit. The Car Kit dock is compatible with all iPhone models, but the TomTom app only works with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

In other words, it’s a mount and a speaker for $120. Add $100 for the TomTom iPhone app, and you could buy yourself a better-performing, Editors’ Choice-winning, 3.5-inch TomTom One 140-S with almost a hundred bucks left over.

It’s back. After making a horrendous false start with the early promise of iPod touch support and the inclusion of the iPhone App in its £100 price tag, the TomTom Car Kit has returned to the Apple Store. In a big fat disclaimer, TomTom writes:

The TomTom app for iPhone is not included with this TomTom Car Kit. The Car Kit dock is compatible with all iPhone models, but the TomTom app only works with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

We only see it in the UK store at the moment but it’s likely to pop on your local store anytime now. Ships in 1-2 weeks.

TomTom’s iPhone car kit gets taken for a stationary test drive

It’s been a long trip filled with hopes and confusion, but TomTom’s iPhone car kit is now finally nearing an actual release (minus the bundled navigation app), and a few lucky folks are beginning to get their hands on it. While they unfortunately didn’t get to take it for an actual test drive, the folks at Recombu did get to spend a bit of time with the device and deliver a few initial impressions, noting that the kit feels solid and easily accommodates your iPhone without too much effort. Interestingly, the site also says that TomTom told it that the kit will also work with “any sat-nav iPhone app,” and that TomTom’s own navigation app (which has apparently already sold thousands of copies) will be getting free updates. TomTom Start wants to democratize GPS navigation: smartphones point, laugh

Paradoxically, most of the fuss surrounding TomTom of late has been associated with a certain smartphone — a class of devices that signals the end to the dedicated SatNavs TomTom builds. Still, TomTom hasn’t given up the fight yet as they’ve just announced the TomTom Start, a Є129 entry-level GPS navigator with 3.5-inch display and choice of six StartSkin covers costing €15 per — you know, so you can change the look of your GPS unit every time you reupholster your car’s interior. The device cost climbs to Є149 for a European map pre-load instead of the base, regional offering. Start features TomTom’s IQ Routes and Map Share technology to find the fastest route benefiting from the aggregated map correction data fed by the hoards of local TomTom-ers. Look for it in the UK and Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway… someday, TomTom doesn’t say when.

MotionX GPS Drive Review: Hands Down the Best Value In GPS Apps

People bitching about TomTom’s $100 iPhone navigation app can either a) bitch louder or b) download MotionX GPS Drive by Fullpower. It’s $3 per month or $25 per year, and it works just fine.

I am not going to tell you this is the best turn-by-turn road navigation app in the world. The designers made some funny UI choices, there’s no multi-destination or point-on-map routing, it doesn’t have text-to-speech, and it only runs in portrait mode, taking up awkward space on my dashboard. Still, there’s almost no reason not to get it.

I still think Navigon is the slickest, and ALK’s CoPilot is impressively full featured for costing just $35. But the commitment required for MotionX GPS Drive beats them all: It’s $3 to download, and you get a month of turn-by-turn directions included in that. Then, if you want, you pay either $25 for a year of full turn-by-turn, or $3 for a month—and the charges are non-recurring. You can pay the $3 only when you actually need it.

Compared to What?

Because it’s a connected product, its closest comparisons are AT&T Navigator by TeleNav ($10/month) and Gokivo by Networks In Motion (recently reduced to $5/month). It doesn’t come with 1.5GB in onboard maps like TomTom, Navigon, ALK and Sygic—instead it downloads them over the air—so you have to be in a service area when you are setting out on your destination. Still, if your phone has less memory to spare, it could be better.

Connected Services

Not only does it download Navteq maps on the fly, but it uses online search instead of stored points of interest. In theory this is better, because it means fewer wrong addresses of business who closed or moved. That’s not always the case, but I did find MotionX to have a decent online search—the first in this class that I’ve seen powered by Microsoft’s Bing.

Again, because it’s online, it has access to traffic data. At the moment, though, the app only uses traffic information in its routing, says the developers. There’s no way to check a traffic report like on other apps. However, the developers appear to be toying with a Dash-like concept too: A future version of the app may be used to gather and share its own live traffic data. There’s nothing like that now, and Fullpower won’t share details, but it sounds like fun. I also asked about live gas prices, which others offer: None now, but that will change.

Some Superficial Complaints

I did have a few cosmetic issues with the app. For starters, it doesn’t have a landscape mode, so the phone is always upright. I want landscape mode because it fits way better when it’s horizontal in the dashboard mount (which, like with all other GPS apps, will run you an extra $10-$100). That’s a fact, though Fullpower goes out of their way to say they didn’t add landscape because nobody’s asked for it yet. Until now.

Oddly enough, Fullpower is proud of their in-app compass, which I find extraneous on two levels. For one, if I’m looking at a map, no matter whether north is up or the heading is up, I know which direction I’m pointing. Additionally, that compass only works with 3GS (I believe), and the 3GS already has a compass. When do you ever pull over to the side of the road and say “if I only knew where north was!”? Maybe in the days before GPS that was an issue, but now it doesn’t matter so much. (Until the sky falls, at least.)

I would also love to customize the things I see on the main screen. At the moment, next to the upcoming turn information, it flips through assorted trip data: ETA, compass heading, distance remaining and time remaining. I really only care about ETA, so I’d like to freeze that up top, and may be get a speed indicator with speed limit warnings as well.

My final issue is more of a quirk than anything else: To view the list of upcoming turns, you have to tap the iPod button at the bottom of the screen. It’s nice to have rich iPod access in the app (all apps have a rudimentary iPod access—as long as a song is already playing, you double-tap the home button—but this does more). Still it’s weird for that all-important list of turns to be hidden under a button called “iPod.”

How Is The Price So Low?

A guy like me could bitch about this app more, trust me, but the fact is, I’ve driven with it for almost a week, and it gets you where you want to go, quickly and simply. But it’s going to sell like mad because the price of entry is the lowest around, and its two-year cost of ownership—$53 if you use it regularly—is competitive, especially when you consider that’s the initial download plus two completely optional $25 increments. By allowing you so many options to walk away, MotionX actually has you by the balls.

I have asked Fullpower and its competitors how pricing could get this crazy, with $100 apps competing with $3 apps. Fullpower’s best answer is that they’re not in any other GPS turn-by-turn business, so they don’t have to protect the price of earlier products the way TeleNav or TomTom might have to. (“If they offer a better value on the iPhone than to their existing customers, they may have challenges.”) When I asked TeleNav, makers of the $10/month AT&T Navigator and Sprint Navigator, they said, “Honestly, at a $3-per-month price point, it is unclear how a company could possibly innovate, build out features and work on the quality of the app without losing money.”

What they didn’t say, but what you’re already thinking, is that for $3 a month, it doesn’t hurt to find out. [iTunes Link]
