DirecTV’s Nomad teaser page suggests a Slingbox competitor, but little else

It’s been a while since we heard anything solid about the DirecTV Nomad unit, but a teaser page recently went live on the satellite company’s website showing the device. The tiny pic isn’t incredibly revealing, but other than “coming soon” the page also displays a laptop, phone and tablet — likely targets for viewers to watch their TV broadcasts away from the satellite box. That MDR1R0-01 remains scarce, but hit the source link and keep your eye peeled on that URL for more information about DirecTV’s competitor to the Slingbox / iPad apps being offered by other TV providers.

[Thanks, Tyler]

Xbox 360’s ESPN3 app updated with more voice control, split screen and more

The PlayStation 3 may have NFL Sunday Ticket but the Xbox 360 still has exclusive access to ESPN3’s slate of games, shows and replays, and today the app was updated with a new look and a few new features. Viewers can designate their favorite sports and teams to bring related content right to the front, while a new mini-guide gives easy access to other streams while you watch. If you’re trying to keep track of more than one game there’s also support for split screen viewing (with independent control of each stream) and upgraded voice control for Kinect owners. Other tweaks include a college football scoreboard to keep track of all the games at once, reminders, live alerts on score changes and the addition of ESPN’s BottomLine. Unchanged is the restriction that you need to subscribe to a TV provider that includes ESPN3 in its package, but if you do have the service (and shell out for XBL, of course) it should be available the next time you load up your console. Check out the YouTube videos embedded above and after the break along with a press release for a runthrough of some of the new features.

Sony’s AR tool lets you put big screens in small apartments (video)

It may not be a slick as Panasonic’s dream-TV AR app, but at least Sony’s keeping up with the competition. Live from the company’s UK outfit is an online AR tool enabling you, dear reader, to visualize all sorts of boob tubes you can (and can’t) afford. After printing, affixing and photographing a marker, prospective buyers can get a better sense of what sets fit in their humble abodes. Interested in giving it a go? Mosey on past the break for PR and a video, and then hop beyond the source link to begin your adventure.

[Thanks, Matt]

TiVo talks cable, satellite deals in Q2 results; DirecTiVo exposed! (video)

TiVo’s results for the second quarter are here and there were a few tidbits that let us know where its products are going in the future. Despite reporting a net loss for the quarter, its cash position was up after receiving the first $300 million payment from its settlement with Dish Network. Things appear to be going well with Virgin Media in the UK where it reported 50,000 TiVo’s live by the end of July and ONO is closing in on a launch in Spain, while closer to home RCN is almost ready to officially offer a whole-home DVR setup based on the quad-tuner TiVo Premiere Q. Charter and DirecTV are mentioned as “progressing towards launch”, but the company seems particularly excited to see the current state of patent warfare going on, trumpeting its 210 issued patents and 389 applications.

Speaking of the DirecTivo, an apparent training video has leaked. ZatzNotFunny has more information, but it reveals the hardware and UI, which disappointingly harken back to the days of older Series3 hardware instead of the updated HD menus on the new Premiere boxes. Check out the video and Q2 press release after the break.

ATSC commences 3DTV standard development, better get your glasses ready

The Advanced Television Systems Committee recently commenced development of a 3D broadcast TV standard which would let legacy devices to receive 3D signals without blowing their tiny electronic minds. In a year’s time, it’s planning to have a completed rulebook, allowing for 3D broadcasts with left- and right-eye views in a single channel, also enabling mobile and non-real time delivery — meaning you’ve got one less device to replace when you decide to make the switch to 3D. Whilst many of these standards already exist (and are in use) the ATSC is now looking to get everyone in North America singing from the same sheet. Now’s about the time to invest in some better glasses.

Must See HDTV (August 22nd – 28th)

It’s a pretty slow week while we wait for the fall TV season to get in gear and the NFL preseason comes to an end, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to watch. Check out our top three picks for the week right here, and look after the break for our weekly listings of what to look out for on TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Swingers
Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau star in this classic flick that’s finally coming to Blu-ray in the US this week. Coming straight out of 1996 at a value priced $10.49, we’ll take every opportunity to see Wayne Gretzky’s head bleed.
($10.49 on Amazon, August 23rd)

Doctor Who
Season six of the popular British sci-fi show continues, with its summer premiere coming on BBC America Saturday night. Amy Pond and the Doctor have, as usual, a series of mysteries to investigate throughout time and space with a variety of aliens and famous historical figures tossed in. We preferred David Tennant’s Doctor but Matt Smith is holding down the role admirably for now — check out a prequel to this week’s Let’s Kill Hitler episode embedded after the break.
(Saturday, BBC America, 9 p.m.)

Little League World Series
Seriously. This is one of the few youth sports that actually bears some resemblance to the pro version, and with teams coming in from all around the world to challenge the USA’s best, there’s plenty of national pride on the line, which is always a bonus. Finally, if you’re an early 3D adopter many of the games this week will air on ESPN 3D, check the schedule to find out which ones.
(All week, ESPN & ESPN 3D)

Comcast’s Xfinity app debuts on Blackberry, updated on iOS

It may not have live TV streaming yet, but Comcast has been at the forefront of expanding the cable TV experience to phones and tablets with its Xfinity app and pushed further recently, updating the iOS version and releasing an edition for Blackberry phones. On Blackberry it brings the usual set of features, including Comcast.net email access, remote DVR scheduling and trailers for VOD selections. On iOS, v1.60 adds a “previously played” button that can return the TV to previously watched channels, or start playing VOD content on the mobile devices right where you last left off. Check the official blog for more details or just download from iTunes or Blackberry App World.

Optoma delivers three new projectors, one does 3D for just $1,499

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again — you deserve a projector. Watch those tiny LCDs and plasmas if you want, but it’s time to go big or go home and Optoma is delivering three new beamers to help that happen. The new HD33 model (pictured above) makes its claim to fame as the first 1080p 3D projector available for less than $1,500, while the HD3300 and HD8300 make their bones in slighly more upmarket segments, priced at $1,999 and $4,499, respectively. All three make 3D happen in conjunction with the company’s new RF-synced active shutter glasses, while featuring PureMotion3D and PureDepth for frame interpolation and brightness control. Those extra bucks spent on the HD8300 has ISF certified controls, lens shift for extra placement flexibility, PureMotion4D motion interpolation and a lamp rated at 1,500 lumens. The HD33 is available now, while the other two are expected to start shipping later this month, however with CEDIA 2011 just around the corner we’d probably hold off on pressing the buy button before everyone shows off their latest home theater wares.
