JVC shows off projectors with 4K precision, but not quite 4K pixels

JVC first brought 4K home with its $175k DLA-RS4000 and now it’s back with four new models with greater than HD resolution at much easier to swallow prices. You’ll note the term used is “with 4K precision”, because strictly speaking these don’t project over 4,000 pixels of horizontal resolution, coming in at a still impressive 3,840 x 2,160 resolution. While this is still about four times the number of a standard HD image, it’s less than say, Sony’s VPL-VW1000ES. Filling in the difference is JVC’s e-Shift technology, which was originally developed for its 8K projector. It works by creating two 1080p frames, with one shifted down diagonally and alternated at 120Hz to create the effect.

The scheme is not far off from the old wobulation technology featured in some “1080p” DLPs once upon a time, but this time there are no moving parts as it’s all being done electronically. Shown off with an HD resolution source the upscaled image was still impressively sharp to us, even up close, while it also handles native 4K feed. While JVC may not be winning on raw pixel count, what it does have is a serious price advantage. Sony indicated its hardware would be available for “less than $25,000” but the top of the line JVC has an MSRP of just $12k, while the cheaper model will be $7,999 when they all ship in November. Check out the press release after the break and images in the gallery for details, including those so rarely seen native contrast ratio measurements.

ESPN’s new Monday Night Football deal includes 3D broadcasts, WatchESPN app

Just hours before the 2011 NFL season kicks off, the ESPN and the NFL announced a new eight year extension for Monday Night Football that runs from 2014 to 2021 and most notably to us, includes a provision for 3D broadcast rights. The new deal covers items from new studio programming (beginning this season) to availability of games on the WatchESPN mobile app to the Pro Bowl we still won’t watch. According to the LA Times, the pricetag for ESPN — before it’s passed on to the cable / satellite company and eventually ends up on your bill in a rate increase — is around $1.9 billion per season, up from $1.1 billion previously. While this should help quell ideas that ESPN 3D might be axed after its removal from U-verse, the bad news is it could still be a ways off, as we’re told 3D broadcasts are expected when the extension takes effect in 2014. Sadly, 3D early adopters are probably used to waiting, with unbundled retail availability of Avatar still pending for 2012, this is just one more item to add to your calendar.

LG, Sharp and Philips to build developer’s kit, create Smart TV app standard

A triumvirate of television titans — LG, Sharp and Philips — are joining forces to create a development kit, defining a common standard for their Smart TV apps. The power play addresses the problem of fragmentation, since developers will only need to make one version of an app for it to work across all three of the ‘tubes operating systems. Based on open standards like HTML5, CE-HTML and HbbTV, developers should get their hands on a beta version by early October, with the finalized version due by the end of the year. The better question now is whether the Romanesque trio can drum up enough developer support to beat out competitors in an app-tastic coup d’etat, or if the likes of Vizio, Sony and Samsung will eventually join in. Needless to say, we’ll be digging for more at CEDIA later this month.

THX Media Director coming to Star Wars Blu-ray discs

While you were tastefully voicing your concerns over the latest changes to the original trilogy, THX exec Rick Dean let slip that the upcoming Star Wars Blu-ray release will feature the company’s new Media Director. The technology offers up metadata on the disc, allowing THX Media Director-enabled home theater devices like TVs and Blu-ray players to adjust to the appropriate settings. The decision to offer up the technology for the Star Wars release first is all about “keeping it in the family” for Lucasfilm, says Dean — because if there’s one thing Star Wars knows, it’s keeping it in the family, right? The Blu-ray release is set to September 16th.

Engadget HD Podcast 264 – 09.06.2011

This week’s Labor Day podcast is here, squeezed between IFA last week and CEDIA this week. Of course, all those balls in the air gave us plenty to talk about, not the least of which included definitive word on the status of Media Center in Windows 8. Must See HDTV (September 5th – 11th)

Check out our highlighted picks of the week right here, followed after the break by our weekly listings of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Sons of Anarchy
SAMCRO is back in action. This isn’t the highest profile cable show on this week (don’t forget the Entourage and Rescue Me season finales) but as it comes back for a fourth season we are always ready to see what’s going down in Charming, CA. After the events of last season things will kick off 14 months later, but we doubt a stint in prison will have changed many things for our favorite motorcycle club.
(September 6th, FX, 10PM)

9/11
If you weren’t planning on making next weekend an all 9/11 memorial event, we’d probably recommend steering clear of your TV. From CBS to USA to History to A&E there’s memorial specials and previously unseen footage everywhere you look. A wonderful opportunity to heal as a nation from the tragic events of a decade ago or a crass display of network executives cashing in on our collective grief? Your choice.

NFL
Professional football is finally back. After it seemed like the lockout might last forever we’re getting the season under way on schedule. Both Engadget HD fantasy football leagues have drafted and our favorite teams will kick off in Tampa Bay on Sunday, but the league gets its official kickoff Thursday night as the Packers face the Saints on NBC. We know what we’ll be watching.
(September 8th, NBC, 8:30PM)

Vestel shows off a prototype BitTorrent Certified TV at IFA

Far from sneaking in to the living room, Vestel had a BitTorrent Certified television on display at IFA 2011 this past week. That official stamp means it packs the usual suite of connected TV features including playing local media across the network, and it’s guaranteed to work with BitTorrent approved files from the internet. There’s no word on any official release for this prototype — and we haven’t been able to locate anyone who got a hands-on demo, let us know if you saw it — but it definitely shows how BitTorrent is trying to expand its platform in a manner similar to DivX and XBMC / Boxee. Check out the press release after the break, we’ll be sitting back and watching some totally legal content we just torrented.

Sony’s new internet TV box, projector and Blu-ray player make an appearance at IFA

They didn’t earn highlights during Sony’s IFA 2011 keynote, but it did slip out a few more pieces of home theater hardware that are more likely to end up in your living room than its outlandish 3D helmet. The SMP-N200 replaces the earlier Netbox that debuted last year with a refreshed design and support for HD and 3D. Unsurprisingly, this Blu-ray player (without the Blu-ray) also supports DLNA “throwing” of content, making it a natural Apple TV-style tie-in for the Tablet S and Tablet P once they launch. Moving on, the VPL-VW95ES is a proper replacement for last year’s VPL-VW90ES that we’ll probably get more properly acquainted with later this week at CEDIA. For 2011 it’s been refreshed with 3D conversion capabilities, an integrated 3D emitter to sync the glasses and the ability to set and memorize different lens positions to switch seamlessly between 16:9 and ultrawidescreen projecting. Finally, the BDP-S185 Blu-ray player was announced, with compact size and power consumption that Sony claims is 47 percent less than the previous year’s models as its most notable features. All should start shipping in October, no specific word on pricing yet.

DirecTV’s new HD UI revealed to testers, is prettier and faster than the current one

While DirecTV may tossing an old standard def look on the new DirecTiVo, beta testers got a treat tonight (even better than news AMC HD is on the way) when their boxes downloaded a brand new user interface. It’s the HD UI that was mentioned during the last earnings call, and brings not only fully 16×9 formatted graphics but also, according to testers, a serious performance boost to satellite receivers. If you’re in the test group restart your box and punch 0,2,4,6,8 to snag the new software and have a look for yourself, but if you’re on the outside looking in hit the source link for one of DBSTalk’s typical thorough walkthrough PDFs.
