How would you change HTC’s Arrive?

We know, we know: Mango. But outside of wishing for Microsoft’s most significant update yet to Windows Phone 7, we’re curious to know how else you’d change the HTC Arrive. Your pickings are slim for WP7 on The Now Network, and while the Arrive has an absolutely rock-solid design, we’re sure you’ve picked up on a few quibbles over the past few months. Would you have tweaked the keyboard in any way? Boosted the resolution? Thrown in a WiMAX radio? Improved the camera? Softened the edges somewhat? Go on and get vocal down in comments below!

HTC rolling out unlocked bootloaders to select phones in August

HTC is rocking the world this Sunday evening with an announcement on its Facebook page, stating that, as promised, it’s ready to begin rolling out unlocked bootloaders to the global HTC Sensation in August, followed by the Sensation 4G on T-Mobile and the EVO 3D on Sprint. The process is two-fold: first, HTC pushes a “maintenance release” to the phones, but this won’t mean a thing until step two — releasing the actual unlocking tool — is complete in early September. This all sounds like a sure thing for the global HTC Sensation, but the major hurdle the company faces in the US is carrier approval. In order for it to push out the update, T-Mobile and Sprint first must give the final go-ahead for the Sensation 4G and EVO 3D, so nothing here is completely set in stone until then.

Fortunately, HTC doesn’t plan to stop there. According to its Facebook page, it will “continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments.” There was no word on which handsets will receive the capability or when we can expect to see it. Naturally, with the tight grip US carriers have on subsidized handsets, it’s possible you won’t reap the benefits despite HTC’s good intentions.

Verizon pushes latest Thunderbolt update: solves reboot issues, kills free mobile hotspot

Don’t act like Verizon didn’t warn you: for Thunderbolt owners who see an available software update pop up on their phone this evening, they’ll be placed squarely between a rock and a towering boulder. Why? On one hand, the Froyo OTA update promises to nix random reboots, improve data connectivity and fix the Bluetooth Discovery Mode pop-up windows. On the other, it adds a helping of bloatware (V CAST Music, V CAST Videos and My Verizon) while also killing the lust-worthy free mobile hotspot feature. Not like the carrier ever said it’d be any different come early July, but it’s certainly a case of picking your poison here. If your T-bolt seems to be humming along just fine, we’d probably avoid the urge to update to the latest build. If it’s rebooting as we speak, well… good luck pulling that trigger.

T-Mobile’s myTouch 4G Slide shows off its camera chops (video)

We’ve known since its recent announcement that T-Mobile’s myTouch 4G Slide will be a mobile photographer’s delight and now we get to see the camera UI in action on video. As a quick reminder, the carrier’s upcoming Gingerbread smartphone is made by HTC and features Sense 3.0, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch WVGA Super LCD display, HSPA+ connectivity on the AWS spectrum, and a trick 8 megapixel shooter. The f2.2 wide-angle lens is combined with a low-light capable sensor and a dual-LED flash, but it’s the camera software that really shines. Like on the Sensation, you’ll find support for 1080p HD video recording, but the myTouch 4G Slide adds multiple scenes, zero shutter lag technology, continuous autofocus, HDR stills capture, plus panorama and burst modes, along with a dedicated two-stage shutter key. While we doubt it will dethrone Nokia’s N8 in term of raw picture quality, we’re looking forward to putting HTC’s latest feature-packed shooter through its paces when the handset debuts this month for $199 on contract.

HTC acquires S3 Graphics and its prodigious patent portfolio, dares you to sue

Flush with cash, but not a fan of spending it on litigation? We hear you, and apparently so does HTC. The Taiwanese firm announced today it’ll purchase S3 Graphics and its patent portfolio from VIA for a cool $300 million, giving the smartphone maker 265 new weapons in its IP arsenal. Also part of the deal is a perpetual license to the patents’ former owner, so that the chipset manufacturer can keep cranking out silicon without fear of legal reprisal. Given HTC’s competitors recently went on a giant patent shopping spree, we’d surmise that strengthening its warchest is, dare we say, quietly brilliant.

HTC does the whole record profit thing again for Q2

Another day, another record profit from the folks at HTC. Surely even the Taiwanese handset manufacturer must be bored of reporting this endless stream of good news, right? Yeah, probably not. The company happily announced this week an impressive second quarter net income of NT$17.5 billion ($608 million), more than double what it reported for the same time period the year prior. Overall revenue for the quarter hit NT$124.4 billion, thanks to the ever-present demand for Android handsets. And revenue from the company is expected to keep on growing in Q3 — maybe boredom isn’t so bad after all.

HTC Flyer now includes stylus at Best Buy, you can hang on to your 80 bucks

Pinching pennies so you can buy the HTC Flyer and the optional $80 stylus? Give your thumb and index finger a rest for a while. Best Buy, which originally sold the Scribe digital pen as an additional accessory, is now including it with the tablet, free of charge. A quick look at the retailer’s online store shows the pair sitting side-by-side in perfect harmony, bundled in the same package for $499. This may not seal the deal for your indecisive mind, but at least now you’ll be able to draw moustaches on your ex’s Facebook pics without your wallet giving you dirty looks.

HTC sales up nearly 88-percent from last year, analysts still skeptical on stock

HTCDespite having moved into the number five slot on IDC’s list of the top handset makers world wide — beating out RIM and just behind Apple — HTC has actually seen its share prices drop 19-percent since June 7th. The stock did rebound slightly following news that the company’s sales for June were a staggering 87.8-percent higher than the same time last year. Surprisingly, that’s actually a drop from May’s figures which were 116-percent higher than the same month in 2010. Even though the company continues to break its own sales and profit records, some analysts don’t think the company is out of the woods just yet — a rather confusing outlook to us but, then again, we’re not financial analysts.

EVO 3D at the FCC redux: now with AWS 3G (update)

Well, what have we here? Another HTC EVO 3D, aka the PG86300, has landed on the FCC’s doorstep — only this time it’s packing radios similar to those seen in the phone’s European edition. This one works on the 1700MHz AWS band, so it appears could be destined for duty in the pockets of T-Mobile’s magenta-clad masses, though we can’t say for sure. However, now that the government’s decreed this EVO’s electronics won’t fry our brains, it shouldn’t be be long before we find out.

Update: This FCC filing is most likely for the European EVO 3G, which, like the European Sensation and Flyer, features a tri-band 3G (HSPA+) radio with 2100 / 1700 (AWS) and 900MHz as well as a quadband 2G radio. This means you’ll possibly be able to import the handset unlocked from Europe and use it with 3G on carriers like T-Mobile USA or Wind in Canada. Sorry, AT&T customers, no 3G soup for you!

HTC EVO 3D torn down, three-dimensional magic revealed (video)

So, it turns out that when you crack open the EVO 3D, pixie dust doesn’t pour out of the thing — disappointing, sure, but such is life. Thankfully, there are some interesting things to look at, however, like the dual-core processor and, of course, the cameras that let you take all of those awesome 3D shots of your pets. Wanna see more of the magic? How about a seven minute teardown video shot with a cameraphone? It’s not quite the manner of pro teardowns we’re used to seeing from the folks at iFixit, but there is a certain joy in watching a guy excitedly tear open his new toy. For the rest of you, we don’t recommend trying this at home — but if you do, definitely upload it to YouTube. Video after the break.
