IDC: Apple’s now third largest PC vendor in US with 10.6 percent market share

Apple might be billing its next big event as “Back to the Mac,” but don’t let that fool you into thinking its computer platform has been waning. Quite to the contrary, according to IDC, which reports the Cupertino team has grabbed third spot in the US PC sales charts with a 10.6 percent market share, bumping the incumbent Acer into fourth. Two million Mac shipments during the period represented an increase of 24.1 percent relative to last year, while the overall PC market turned in a somewhat morose 3.8 percent growth. Gartner’s also unleashed its numbers unto the world today, giving Acer the lead for third by the slimmest of margins, but both stat teams agree that the Taiwanese vendor has suffered a bad year along with Dell, which has also experienced some shrinkage. Toshiba’s the only major Windows machine seller to see its fortunes improve with double-digit growth, while HP seems to be hanging on to the top spot nice and steadily. DisplaySearch: consumers playing a ‘wait and see’ game with 3DTVs

We’ve mixed feelings on 3D as a whole, and it seems that the vast majority of consumers do as well. We’ve seen quite a few lovely implementations, and there’s hardly a better way to watch sports away from the field, but those dreaded 3D glasses are likely keeping most people an arm’s length away. According to a new report from DisplaySearch, 3DTVs will make up just two percent of all flat panels shipped in 2010. Paul Gray, Director of TV Electronics Research, noted that “while TV manufacturers have bold plans and a lot of new products, consumers remain cautious,” continuing by stating that “consumers have been told that 3D TV is the future, but there still remains a huge price jump and little 3D content to watch.” In particular, “North American consumers appear to be playing a waiting game,” and in Western Europe, the sales of 3D glasses to sets has failed to hit 1:1. That said, the report feels rather strongly about the future, noting that 90 million 3DTV sets are expected to ship in 2014. Of course, if we’ve only got two or three 2D options to choose from by then, the estimated skyrocketing makes a lot more sense…

Microsoft and Adobe CEOs meet, purportedly plan world domination

Like any two technology behemoths, Adobe and Microsoft have certainly had their ups and downs. But now that Google and Apple are looming over them in a number of ways, it seems as if the two may be courting one another in order to help re-level the playing field. According to a New York Times report — which was crafted after collecting reports from “employees and consultants to the companies who were involved in the discussions that took place” — Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen recently met at the latter’s headquarters for a closed-door meeting. Purportedly, the meeting went on for over an hour and covered a variety of topics, with one of ’em being Apple and its newfound dominance in the mobile market. Shockingly enough, a “possible acquisition of Adobe by Microsoft were among the options” of stopping the skyrocketing growth. The report accurately notes that such a deal makes entirely more sense now that Redmond isn’t exactly the 800 pound gorilla that it was before Android and iOS hit the mainstream, though details beyond these assumptions were few and far betwixt. Whatever happens, no one can blame Steve Jobs for not giving Adobe every possible reason to hit Apple with everything it’s got — even if that involves buddying up with Ballmer and co.

Skype lands Cisco’s Tony Bates as new CEO

It may sound fairly bland on paper, but the potential implications here are notable. Tony Bates, who was seen as a major player within Cisco reporting directly to CEO John Chambers, has just left to take over the CEO role at Skype. Cisco’s own blog affirmed that Bates was leaving “to pursue another opportunity,” and The New York Times has it that Joshua Silverman is stepping aside to make room for Mr. Bates. He’ll arrive just in time to make a serious push for an IPO, grab more profit from its blossoming user base (which largely doesn’t pay anything to make Skype-to-Skype calls) and possibly “make a deeper push into carrier and enterprise markets,” as GigaOM puts it. Frankly, we’d be interested in seeing if any leftover synergies (yeah, we said it) could lead to a Skype-enabled Flip Video camcorder. Bates would obviously have great contacts with Cisco in order to make it happen, and honestly, it’d be a win-win for both parties. Crazier things have happened, right?

BlindType acquired by Google, Android typists grin uncontrollably

The note’s short and sweet, but it confirms that Google‘s buying spree is still on — BlindType was just acquired by the Big G. If you’ll recall, we were wowed back in July by the software’s ability to predict words regardless of how text was inputted, and it seems as if a few bigwigs within Google were as well. It’s unclear what Google’s Android team plans to do with its newfound IP, but you shouldn’t have to strain your imagination too hard to hazard a guess. As for the BlindType team? They’re “excited to join Google, and look forward to the great opportunities for mobile innovation that lie ahead.” Likewise, folks… likewise.

Sony outsourcing some image sensor production to Fujitsu

Whoa. Sony sure didn’t mention anything about this at its Photokina press conference last week, but then again, it’s not the most glamorous announcement to make. According to Reuters, Sony is aiming to “outsource some production of image sensors used in digital cameras and mobile phones to Fujitsu,” and as you’d expect, it’s being done in a bid to shave costs and “cope with tough global competition.” According to a Sony spokesperson, the company has been mulling this decision for awhile, but it’s unclear if this will have any further impact in Sony’s employment numbers. It’s also unclear why “some” sensor production will remain internal — we’re guessing that newfangled Translucent Mirror technology may have convinced the firm to keep the DSLR lines a bit closer to the chest. It’s bruited that Sony will begin subcontracting output to Fujitsu later in the year, and it could shift even more output if things go swimmingly. Funny enough, an eerily similar scenario hit Sony’s LCD department back in early 2008. What’s next? Subcontracting Walkman production to Apple?

Sony brings TomTom to US-bound XNV-770BT and XNV-660BT in-dash head units

We heard back at IFA that Sony was making the absolutely brilliant move of incorporating a market leading navigational system into its Xplod line of in-dash A/V units, and now that love is being shipped across the Atlantic (or the Pacific, if you’re taking the scenic route) in the form of the XNV-770BT and XNV-660BT. The beautiful Sony / TomTom partnership will soon be assisting clueless American motorists when both of the previously mentioned units ship in November, with the 770BT offering a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen and the 660BT stepping down to a 6.1-incher. They’ll both feature rear USB ports for iDevice connections, support for multi-channel audio playback and most importantly, pre-loaded maps of US and Canadian roadways. TomTom claims that its maps offer more than one million more miles of roads than other GPS brands in America alone, and buyers will also be treated to familiar TomTom extras like IQ Routes, Advanced Lane Guidance, MapShare and six million POIs. We still wish Garmin would’ve received the nod here, but it’s certainly better than some white label system — check ’em soon for $1,300 and $1,000 in order of mention.

Study: we’re keeping our mobiles longer, despite sinking prices

Had your current cellphone for the better part of the this century? Turns out you aren’t the only one — according to new research gathered by J.D. Power and Associates, Americans are holding onto their mobiles for longer than ever these days. In fact, the study found that the length of time customers keep their traditional wireless cell phone has increased by 17 percent from 2009, with the average customer holding onto their phone for around 20.5 months. That’s the longest period since this study began tracking the data in 1999, when the average was 17.3 months. Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at the company, feels that the recent economic downturn has a lot to do with folks keeping their existing phones longer, while we’re guessing that it has to do with existing phones simply being “good enough.”

Furthermore, anyone who is even remotely tuned into the mobile world knows that widespread 4G is just around the bend, giving folks reason to hold off on renewing their contract until WiMAX / LTE comes to their carrier of choice. Curiously, phone prices are lower than ever before, which should mean that it’s even less expensive to upgrade now than in the past. Of course, none of that matters if your existing phone contract isn’t up (or you aren’t due for a discounted renewal), and the savings on the hardware is likely being devoured by the extra fees we’re paying for messaging and data. Lowell McAdam tapped to succeed Verizon head Ivan Seidenberg

This quirky, fun lovin’ gent is Lowell McAdam, who becomes the president and COO of Verizon Communications beginning October 1. According to the company press release: “The appointment of McAdam by the Verizon board of directors is an important step in the succession process for when Seidenberg retires from the company.” McAdam will be in charge of Verizon Wireless, Verizon Telecom and Business, Verizon Services Operations, and — presumably — begging for the iPhone. Microsoft’s Tivanka Ellawala: no plans to develop more phone hardware

Well, that settles that. Not that we really expected Microsoft to branch out and try the whole “let’s make a phone!” thing again — particularly after the Kin debacle ended the way it did — but the company’s own Tivanka Ellawala just said as much at an investor conference in San Francisco. For those unaware, Mr. Ellawala is the company’s CFO for the Mobile Communications Business, and we have all ideas he’s still reeling from lost investments related to Kin. Answering a question about rumors surrounding a future Microsoft-built phone, he stated: “We are in the software business and that is where our business will be focused.” He went on to stress the importance and magnitude of Windows Phone 7, which he says will spearhead demand for data services and will be “strong on the gaming side.” Honestly, we aren’t too bummed out — we’d rather the engineers in Redmond stick to making the best mobile OS they can, while the dudes and dudettes at HTC, Samsung and LG keep on cranking out the drool-worthy hardware. But mostly we’re just terrified of the Kin 2.
