Why Apple Will Not Release a Cloud-Based iPhone Nano This Year [Apple]

I like the idea of an iPhone nano. One with a small screen with the same resolution of an iPhone 3GS, powered by an A4 processor. I’d buy one. But a cloud-based iPhone doesn’t make any sense. Not right now. More »

Verizon’s FiOS DVR Manager for iPhone gets a facelift and some new features

Just like Boxee, Verizon’s rolled out a February 14th update to users with the FiOS DVR Manager for iPhone, who might actually be on Verizon for their phones now too. It adds support for controlling multiple DVRs, a refreshed UI to match the latest version 1.9 on set-top boxes, access for non-DVR users, and a “What’s Hot” feature showing what others in your area are watching. Our friend Dave Zatz has already gone hands-on with the new version 1.5.0 and reports an improved experience with a smoother login process to boot, although he noted it could still improve by integrating itself into the remote control app that’s also available.

Is Apple Finally Releasing an iPhone Nano?

Apple might be preparing a smaller, less-expensive version of the iPhone for release this year, according to multiple media outlets.

The smaller iPhone could be half the size of a normal iPhone, and it may have a strong focus on internet-streamed media and “cloud” storage, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Bloomberg followed up with a report citing a source who claimed to have seen a prototype of the device.

Neither publication had details on device specifications or pricing. Cult of Mac later echoed the rumor about a focus on cloud storage, adding that the smaller iPhone’s storage had to be extremely pared down to reduce costs.

Whispers of a so-called “iPhone Nano” have made the rounds for years, but mainstream media outlets such as WSJ add more credibility to the rumor. It would be an opportune time for Apple to introduce such a product to compete with cheaper, smaller Android smartphones, as well as HP’s miniature Veer smartphone introduced last week alongside the TouchPad tablet.

Apple said to be in talks with Samsung to buy $7.8 billion worth of components

It’s not clear if it’s related to that mysterious $3.9 billion “strategic investment” or not, but it looks like Apple could be about to throw some serious cash in Samsung’s direction. According to a report published in the Korea Economic Daily, Apple is expected to purchase some $7.8 billion worth of components from Samsung this year, including displays, applications processors, and NAND flash chips — all intended for use in iPhones and iPads. As the paper notes, Apple would become Samsung’s single biggest customer if the deal goes through, although the two obviously aren’t strangers to massive deals — Apple has already famously run Samsung’s flash memory supplies dry a few times.

The iPhone nano to forgo local storage? Common sense says ‘no’

Well, MWC is in full swing, where folks like LG, Samsung, Sony, and Nokia are pouring their souls out in front of us in device form. So, naturally, the rumors are swirling about… the iPhone nano. In a followup to the Wall Street Journal‘s big story, Cult of Mac is claiming some additional inside info from a source with a “great track record.” The main idea is that the iPhone nano would rely on the cloud to such an extent that the device wouldn’t really have any local storage to speak of, outside of a streaming buffer. This would of course go hand in hand with a MobileMe / Lala-powered streaming music service, and result in significant component cost savings (flash memory is still pretty spendy). While this sounds like a beautiful dream, it doesn’t make much sense in 2011. Streaming all your music and other media over a capped 3G connection doesn’t sound very consumer-friendly, and there are still plenty of situations where having a nice offline stash of music is a lifesaver. But there’s a bigger problem: where do you put your apps without local storage? Android’s historic shortage of app storage really bit it in the ass, and we doubt Apple wants to go down that route. Sure, we can see a 4GB or so ultracheap device, with a heavy reliance on streaming media (many people get most of their music from Pandora these days, anyways), but a memory-free iPhone just doesn’t sound feasible at this point in time.

iPhone Nano Will Have No Built-in Memory – Rumor

Thumbnail image for iPodnano201.jpg

More rumors about the rumored iPhone nano rumor. According to another rumor from more anonymous sources, the device, said to be due out this summer, will be completely devoid of built-in storage. In attempting to bring the cost of the device down, Apple has apparently stripped it of all manner of features, including one of the most pricey–flash memory.
Yep, if the rumor is to be believed, the new iPhone nano will be a cloud-only device, which perhaps goes a ways toward explaining those MobileMe updates that are said to also be coming this summer. We may also finally see the cloud-based fruits of Apple’s purchase (and subsequent shut down) of Lala.
One thing’s for sure, the carriers would no doubt love such a move–keeping users entirely dependent on streaming for, well, pretty much everything.

CyberNotes: iPhone 3G Launch Day Humor

This article was written on July 11, 2008 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Fun Friday

It’s the iPhone 3G Launch Day today and it wouldn’t be complete without some humor! In about two hours (from the time this posts) at 8 AM, Apple and AT&T Stores in the U.S. will be opening their doors to all of the people willing to sign-up for a two-year contract. We happen to be two of those people willing to buy the iPhone 3G, only because we were able to sell our original iPhones (purchased in Jan. 08′ for $399 ea.) on eBay in the beginning of June for $425 each. We really can’t complain about making money off of our used phones which can go to pay for the increased price for the plans (although for us, the price increase for the family plan is pretty minimal).

Anyway, below you’ll find a few different comics regarding the iPhone or Apple in one way or another. They all come from The Joy of Tech, one of our favorite places for geeky comics! After taking a peak at the comics we’ve gathered up here, definitely checkout their site for a few laughs.

Happy iPhone Launch Day!

WSJ corroborates the mini-iPhone, says Apple may make MobileMe free (update: ‘edge-to-edge’ screen)

The Wall Street Journal has weighed in on rumors of Apple’s smaller iPhone, and citing “people familiar with the matter” the publication says that the rumors are likely true. One such familiar person reportedly saw a device half the size of the iPhone 4, bearing the codename “N97,” and said that the handset will be only about half the size of the original, and at only around half the price too. Amazingly, those anonymous sources continued to divulge information, expressing the idea that Apple could finally make its MobileMe cloud service suite free, and that it just might be the platform from which Apple could finally launch a streaming music platform and lessen the need for all those gigabytes of flash storage in your pocket. We’ll let you know if or when any of that happens, okay?

Update: The WSJ‘s source proved even more talkative after getting an eyeful of the Samsung and Sony announcements this morn; the publication’s article has been updated to read that the device is “significantly lighter” than the iPhone 4, has an “edge-to-edge” touchscreen, and “voice-based navigation” of some sort.

Greenpois0n RC6 breaks new Apple TV’s bonds, performs untethered jailbreak and NitoTV install

Installing nitoTV on your Apple TV used to involve a mildly difficult SSH process, and for those folks who are turned off by running Terminal and punching in lines of code, the newest version of greenpois0n (RC6) might pique your jailbreak interests. It’ll perform an untethered jailbreak (meaning, you can reboot your iProduct without the need to re-JB), freeing your device (iPhone, iPad, etc.) running 4.2.1 and allow you to fulfill all of your out-of-jail needs. Bundled in this new release is a loader that’ll inject nitoTV right onto your little black Apple box. This new greenpois0n is said to fix emulation problems (zodttd’s emulators were having issues) and can be applied right over your device that’s been freed with RC5. But proceed with caution — we’re seeing a bunch of jailbreakers on Twitter claiming have ran into issues (WiFi, booting) with RC6. Hit the source link to grab either the Mac or Windows version.

Fisher Price releases iCan Play Case and Kid-Tough See Yourself Camera, you’ll thank ’em

You know who you can count on to protect your technology? Fisher Price, that’s who. We know, it sounds a bit crazy, but what other company out there is thinking about safeguarding your gadgets from those adorable yet greasy-handed kids? The company is kicking off Toy Fair with a few new gadgets that do just that, and first up, is that cute little Laugh & Learn iCan Play iPhone case up there. The $20 plastic enclosure stores any generation iPhone or iPod Touch and has a screen cover to protect your precious capacitive LCD from “dribbles and drool.” Seriously, OtterBox has its work cut out — the toy even has rattles and handles to entertain when mommy or daddy have to yank the phone out to make a call. And because looking at e-mails, texts, or apps could get bit boring for those three to 36-month-olds after awhile, Fisher is adding a few new Laugh & Learn apps to the App Store later this month.

What about the older kids, you ask? Well, they won’t be interested in your brand new point-and-shoot when they’ve got a Kid-Tough See Yourself Camera of their own. Or at least that’s what the company’s hoping — the plastic camera has a rotating 1.2 megapixel lens with a 4x zoom so kids can take pictures of themselves and then check it out on the 1.8-inch LCD screen. The shooter houses a SD card slot and is powered by four AA batteries. Sure, it doesn’t have the latest and greatest specs, but what $70 camera do you know that can customize shots with “fun digital stamps”? We told you your gadgets would stay safe and sound. The iCan Play Case and Kid-Tough camera won’t be available until this summer, but we’ve got the gallery of hands-on shots below so you can check ’em out earlier.
