In case you’re wondering whether Apple’s forthcoming Digital AV Adapter is worth your $39, you might be pleased to know that said HDMI dongle is also compatible with the latest crop of iOS devices before the iPad 2. This includes the iPhone 4, fourth-generation iPod touch, and even the first-generation iPad. Alas, both movies and slideshows will be capped at 720p output from these older devices, whereas the iPad 2 goes a little further with screen mirroring of up to 1080p — we’re guessing the beastly dual-core A5 chip is what makes the magic happen here, though movie output’s also limited to 720p. And hey, we’re only a few months away from finding out if the next iPhone will also get some 1080p love, so no pressure on buying this dongle just yet.

Apple iOS 4.3 coming March 11 with iPad 2, includes new AirPlay features and FaceTime

Along with the iPad 2, Apple’s releasing the final version of iOS 4.3, which features the Nitro Javscript engine from Safari on OS X, new iTunes Home Sharing features that let you play content from desktop iTunes over WiFi, and the updated suite of AirPlay features from the betas — including the ability for App Store apps to share audio and video. Apple’s also finalizing the new option that lets you assign the side switch to either rotation lock or mute, and it’s adding Personal Hotspot support. There’s also those rumored iOS versions of Photo Booth and FaceTime for the new cameras. It’ll be a free download for all iPads, the GSM iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS and the third- and fourth-gen iPod touch when it’s released on March 11. When will it hit the Verizon iPhone 4? We don’t know yet.

Oscar.com offers ‘all access’ pass to the Academy Awards, for a cost

Sure, you could just watch the Oscars for free along with a bowl of popcorn and your favorite Twitter commentary, but the folks behind the Academy Awards are hoping you’ll try something even more “interactive” this time around. Those that head to Oscar.com this evening will be treated to a few different live cameras that are freely available to everyone, but to really see to everything you’ll have to fork over $4.99 for the “all access” pass. That will give you access to a number of “exclusive viewing opportunities,” including multiple 360 degree cams that you can control, and numerous cameras along the red carpet, backstage, and at the Governors Ball afterwards. And if that’s not enough, you can also download the Oscar Backstage Pass app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch — it’ll run you an additional $0.99.

Apple pushes software update for new iPod nano, still makes an iffy wristwatch

If you bought the new iPod nano to wear as a watch, well, more power to you. However, if you’re a music junkie and purchased the PMP to actually consume media, you might be interested to know that Apple isn’t only updating the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The company has just put out the first software update for the 6th generation nano, 1.1, which allows you to actually turn off the device — nope, before this update there was no way of actually powering the thing down. In addition, you can now pause or play your music with the sleep/wake button. Sadly, that’s about all this new software does. When will Apple make the nano cool for your wrist? The future looks bleak, friends.

iBike Dash turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a cycling computer

There’s not exactly any shortage of ways to mount your iPhone or iPod touch to your bike, but there’s decidedly fewer options that actually turn your iOS device into a full-fledged cycling computer that’s able to replace those from the likes of Garmin. This new iBike Dash device promises to do just that, though. It not only houses your device is a protective, waterproof shell, but it includes an ANT+ speed sensor and is compatible with other ANT+ devices so you can measure heart rate and cadence. It also has room for an extra rechargeable battery to extend your run time, and it naturally makes use of a free app that takes advantage of your iPhone’s GPS capabilities (no built-in GPS here to help out iPod touch users). Of course, all that means this one also costs considerably more than a simple bike mount — look for the basic model to set you back $199, while the deluxe package (including cadence and HR monitors along with an extra battery and charger) runs $329.

Facebook Messenger iPhone app gives you yet another VoIP option, Zuckerberg yet another good idea

Think Facebook chat is cool? How’s about a billion Facebook chats… with your voice. A company by the name of Crisp App has just pushed out an iOS program that may or may not be pulled at any time. You see, the app essentially enables iPod touch and iPhone users to call their Facebook friends (even if they’re logged on via the web) using a VoIP protocol, but there doesn’t appear to be any affiliation with Zuckerberg and co. It also allows chatters to shoot over pictures, browse message history, view a friend’s wall, use emoticons, receive instant replies with Apple Push Notifications and setup sound notifications. Naturally, it supports background operation, but according to GigaOM, there’s still a significant amount of lag present while calling. Still, if you spend more time on Facebook than digging through your standard contact list, you may want to part ways with $2.99 now and pray for a fix in the future — we get the feeling that time’s ticking on this one.

Capcom denies rift with Apple over Smurfs’ Village in-app purchases

Did Apple take Capcom to task over the in-app purchase fiasco in the company’s Smurfs’ Village game for iOS? That was the rumor going around earlier today, after Pocket Gamer reported that it had heard from a “well placed source” who said that Apple had some “strong words” for the game maker. Capcom has now come out and denied any such rift, however, saying in a statement that “we are in frequent communication with Apple, and at no point have they expressed any displeasure to any representatives of Capcom Mobile in regards to our handling of in-app purchases within Smurfs’ Village.” Interestingly, Pocket Gamer’s original report also claimed that Apple was considering a change to its current 15 minute password window to reduce inadvertent in-app purchases, and Capcom says that it would welcome such a move — although it’s not aware of any impending change.

Desk Pets TankBot hands-on (video)

Although we’ve only gotten a glimpse of a TankBot as a render, we were more than interested to see this robot toy doing its thing in the real world. We spotted these tiny desk pals at the International Toy Fair and got to take a look at some working prototypes. As we reported earlier, the TankBots have three functioning modes — autonomous, maze solving and iOS controlled. The bots feature LED eyes and two infrared transmitters — that’s how it solves the mazes. Charging is done by plugging in the USB dongle found on the rear of the tank and you’ll get 15 minutes of battery life after a 30 minute charge. And if you’re wondering how your iOS device will play with the TankBots, a free app will be available to download and each toy will come bundled with an infrared dongle. You can grab TankBots from stores for 20 bucks come June. Head past the break to see some cute, yet impressive maze-solving in action.

Greenpois0n RC6 breaks new Apple TV’s bonds, performs untethered jailbreak and NitoTV install

Installing nitoTV on your Apple TV used to involve a mildly difficult SSH process, and for those folks who are turned off by running Terminal and punching in lines of code, the newest version of greenpois0n (RC6) might pique your jailbreak interests. It’ll perform an untethered jailbreak (meaning, you can reboot your iProduct without the need to re-JB), freeing your device (iPhone, iPad, etc.) running 4.2.1 and allow you to fulfill all of your out-of-jail needs. Bundled in this new release is a loader that’ll inject nitoTV right onto your little black Apple box. This new greenpois0n is said to fix emulation problems (zodttd’s emulators were having issues) and can be applied right over your device that’s been freed with RC5. But proceed with caution — we’re seeing a bunch of jailbreakers on Twitter claiming have ran into issues (WiFi, booting) with RC6. Hit the source link to grab either the Mac or Windows version.
