Video, Pictures: iPod Touch With Camera Appears in Vietnam

new-ipod

Those crazy reporters at the Vietnamese site Tinhte have gotten yet another Apple hardware scoop. After showing us the upcoming 4G iPhone and then the new MacBook, they now have an iPod Touch with a camera.

The device is the real deal, as far as we can see from the wealth of pictures and a rather comprehensive video. When connected to iTunes, it reports itself as running iPhone OS 3.1, but as you can see, it clearly boots into the factory testing software. You can see, though, that the camera works.

Could this be the next-generation iPod Touch, or is it just a prototype left over from last year, when we fully expected to see a model with a camera? It seems odd that Apple would make no exterior changes apart from a hole for the camera lens to peek through. This would leave the case design almost identical for the third year in a row.

The unit is marked “DVT-1″. DVT, according to Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, stands for “design verification test” and is applied to hardware that is almost ready to manufacture.

My guess is that this is a leftover unit from last year. I’m expecting a new iPod Touch with a squarer form-factor similar to that of the new iPhone. Then again, Apple could just add a camera and keep rolling these things out for another year. That $200 entry-level price is pretty aggressive, and running the same production line for a year longer is probably a lot cheaper for Apple. The video is embedded below.

Nike+ Heart-Rate Monitor On Sale June 1st

shoes

Over in the Nike forums, the US launch-date for the Nike+ compatible heart rate monitor has slipped out. In a post from user Nike+ Pro 16, we get the following snippet:

Great news! I have a U.S. launch date for the Nike+ compatible heart rate monitor. It will officially launch on June 1, 2010, although it may reach some retail outlets slightly sooner. It will reach Canadian markets in June and will launch internationally in summer 2010, exact date to be determined.

I know you’re going to ask, so I’ll answer preemptively: no, I am not able to discuss price, color, device

The heart-rate monitor will be an add-on for the existing Nike+ pedometer, which talks to your iPad Nano or iPod Touch to track how far you run. The planned monitor is not really a secret. Back in September 2009 when the 5G iPod Nano was launched, the user manual (PDF) contained instructions for pairing the iPod with the device. What about the legitimacy of this rumor? I checked into the posting history of user Nike+ Pro 16 and he or she appears to be either a Nike employee, or at least a dedicated support person. Get ready fitness freaks: just two weeks to go!

iPod touch with 2 megapixel camera leaked in Vietnam (video)

Guess who has another Apple scoop? Tinhte, the upstarts from Vietnam have first pics of the mythical iPod touch with a camera. The “DVT-1” stamp on the back makes it clear that this is an early design verification test unit in the evolution of product testing. In other words, this might not be the final design whenever Apple chooses to announce it, say, on June 7th. A check of the device’s serial number identifies a late 2009 third generation iPod touch — could be that this device was one of those eBay prototypes that never made it to production for whatever reason.

The Foxconn manufactured device is also running the same base diagnostic utility that we’ve seen before (who could forget that “serial number” icon). The Foxconn label appears to indicate a 64GB model (“64G” using a pair of Samsung 32GB Flash modules presumably) in addition to a 2 megapixel, backside illuminated sensor manufactured by Omnivision (part OV2665-6s). Video after the break.

Nike+ heart rate monitor tipped for June 1 launch

It was hinted at back in September 2009, now it appears certain that Nike will deliver a Nike+ heart rate monitor iPod accessory to the US on June 1st. The following Nike forum post by a long-time contributor and a suspected Nike employee has set heart valves aflutter:

“I have a U.S. launch date for the Nike+ compatible heart rate monitor. It will officially launch on June 1, 2010, although it may reach some retail outlets slightly sooner. It will reach Canadian markets in June and will launch internationally in summer 2010, exact date to be determined.”

We might buy one just to prove that we’re still alive.

Mobile Phone Guitar Makes Sweet Music

mobile-phone-banjoThe Phone Guitar, a project by a Dutch developer, places two Android phones, an iPod Touch and two Windows phones next to each other on a guitar frame and uses apps on the devices to play music.

As the video clip below shows, the developer ‘Steffest’ plays a version of Cracklin Rosie and its not the cacophony you would expect.

The original idea was to create the same mobile app on all three mobile platforms, he says. The app would be a small piano and drum sequencer.

That didn’t quite work out.  “Audio latency is a b*tch and building the app from the same source proved to be possible but unusable,” writes Steffest on his blog. “I ended up writing it three times: in Java for Android, in C# for Windows Mobile and in Objective-C for iPhone.”

Instead what he did was combine his homebrewed app with other programs including the Pocket Stompbox for Windows Mobile that’s good for real time effects. There’s also iShred, an iPhone electric guitar app in the mix.

To play them all at once, he taped them on a piece of wood together with a battery powered speaker.

It’s not all that bad on the ears. Listen to it:

Report: iPad May Be Cannibalizing iPods, Not Macs

Apple’s hot-selling iPad poses no threat to its Macintosh computers, but it’s already chomping into iPod sales, a research report suggests.

NPD Group on Monday afternoon released figures revealing a 17-percent year-to-year decrease for April iPod sales. Meanwhile, Mac computers are seeing healthy growth, increasing 39 percent compared to last April.

Because the iPad was released April 3, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster believes the new tablet device is contributing to the shrinkage in iPod sales.

“April NPD data gives us the first sign of the degree to which the iPad cannibalizes iPod or Mac sales,” Munster said. “From the early NPD data, it appears that the iPad has a minimal cannibalization impact on Mac sales, and could be slightly cannibalizing iPod sales.”

It may seem odd that Apple’s tablet computer could be impacting sales of media players rather than notebooks and desktops. However, it’s not all that surprising, since the iPad in its current state is not a full-blown computer replacement, but rather an extravagant media-consumption device.

We also wouldn’t be surprised if the iPhone is slowing down Apple’s iPod sales — especially those holding out for the fourth-generation iPhone that Gizmodo may have leaked last month.

iPod sales have been steadily dropping since the iPhone gained serious momentum in 2008. Some tech observers have predicted Apple would discontinue the iPod Classic. Given the decreasing costs of flash memory and healthy growth of iPhone OS devices, we’re willing to bet this will be the year Apple finally lays the Classic to rest.

Hauppage WinTV gets WiFi streaming for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

If we’ve learned anything from the long gestation of the SlingPlayer iPhone app, it’s that folks want to stream video to their iPhone, iPad, and / or iPod touch. At least the folks at Hauppauge think so — and the new version (v7.2) of WinTV for the WinTV -HVR tuner board for the PC now includes that functionality. Indeed, the software will even stream 16 and Pregnant (or whatever it is you’re into these days) to your Mac computer. Sadly, all of this streaming is going down via WiFi, but who knows? Maybe you really want to record TV on one machine and then watch it five feet away. It will be available directly from Hauppauge for $9.95, although the company is making a free upgrade available to current owners of WinTV-HVRs. PR after the break.

Apple’s Seamlessly Embedded Heart Rate Monitor could turn the iPhone into a new-age mood ring

Nike is making millions from its Apple-friendly wares, designed to turned technophiles into fitness freaks. Imagine the possibilities if the iPhone could not only track your running stride but also monitor your heart rate while doing it. That’s one of a suite of potential uses for this patent app from Apple, a Seamlessly Embedded Heart Rate Monitor. The design is for a series of electrodes that are, well, seamlessly embedded into the shell of a given device in such a way that they are “not visibly or haptically distinguishable on the device.” The device could then, with a touch, measure heart-rate, uniquely identify a user, and even “determine the user’s mood from the cardiac signals.” Just imagine the new flood of EKG-related apps: iPalpitate, Murmur Maker, Cardiac Arrest… the possibilities are endless.

[Thanks, Staska]
