Apple granted design patent for original iPhone, iPod touch

Apple may have enough patents and patent applications to wallpaper its entire Cupertino campus, but we’re guessing this is one it’s been especially eager to get: a design patent for the original iPhone and iPod touch. That, of course, covers the “ornamental design” of the devices and not their functionality, which means that any other devices that look a little too similar are now treading on even more dangerous territory than before. As with other Apple patents, you’ll find Jonathan P. Ives and Steve (no “P”) Jobs listed among the fourteen inventors, and you’ll also find plenty of references to earlier patents and other relevant devices — including a pointer to none other than one of our posts on the infamous Meizu M8.

[Thanks, Fabian]

Apple Adds iPhone Multitasking–You React

Apple_iPhone_Pics.jpg
Apple and company CEO Steve Jobs finally went and did it, they added Multitasking–of a sort–to the iPhone OS. It’s not a pure-play, mind you. In iPhone OS 4 there are now certain services that developers can access to run processes in the background. Jobs is promising that this will protect performance and battery life.

Aside from a Verizon iPhone, this was probably the single-most-requested iPhone feature. While the developer preview is coming out today, consumers won’t see it until the summer, likely with a new iPhone. This sounds like good news for iPhone, iPad and Touch owners, especially those who wanted to run Pandora streaming music in the background while doing other things. Of course, I was curious what consumers thought of the news. I asked: “So what does everyone think of Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 “multitasking” for new iPhones, iPads and Touchs? Is it good enough?”

Here’s a sampling of how people responded on Twitter.

iPhone OS 4.0: The Best New Features [Iphone Os 4]

The curtain has been pulled back on iPhone 4, and the list of new features is massive: There’s multitasking (finally!), a refreshed interface, and literally hundreds of other changes, all coming this summer. Here’s the rundown. More »

How Multitasking Works in the New iPhone OS 4.0 [Iphone Os 4]

At last, multitasking is coming to the iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch (3rd Gen) and iPad, allowing you to quickly switch between applications, using one while others keep doing other tasks in the background. This is how it works. More »

iPad OS digging reveals hints of future iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Nessie

Well, well — what have we here? A little digging into the mainframe that lies beneath Apple’s freshly launched iPad has uncovered a few telltale signs of next-generation hardware, and while this is obviously in no way confirmation that new wares are on the way from Cupertino, this kind of stuff has led to similar reveals in the past. If we’re seeing this right, we’re looking at not one, but two new mentions of future iPhones (iPhone 3,2 and iPhone 3,3), alongside a new iPod touch (iPod 4,1) and… a future iPad (iProd 4,1). ‘Course, none of this gives us any indication of the all-important whos or whens, but at least this confirms that mythical creatures still exist in the hearts of those who believe.

Backup Music from iPhone or iPod

I’ve been asked several times how you can get music off of your iPhone or iPod. More often than not it’s because something happened to the user’s music library on their computer, and they are looking for a way to snag all of their precious music from their iPod before it’s completely gone.

A simple and free app called SharePod is capable of doing just that. You can copy songs to your computer, upload them to your iPod, and even backup an iPod. If you’re dealing with an iPhone or iPod Touch you’ll need to have iTunes installed in order for most of the operations to work, but once you pass that hurdle you should be good to go.

Here are some of the features you have to look forward to by using SharePod:

  • Add & remove music and videos from your iPod
  • Add, remove and edit playlists
  • Add & remove album art
  • Copy music, videos and playlists from your iPod to PC
  • Import music/videos into your iTunes library, including playlists and ratings
  • Tag editing
  • Drag n’ drop to and from Explorer
  • Simple, clean interface
  • Quick to load and use with no unnessary complicated features

Now if only Apple offered better two-way syncing with iPods then apps like this wouldn’t be necessary.

iPhone/iPod Co-Creator Tony Fadell Leaves Apple

tony_fadell.jpgTony Fadell is finally leaving Apple for good. The engineer joined the company nine years ago and played a key role in the development of two industry-shaping products, the iPod and iPhone. Fadell rose to the position of senior vice president, but stepped down from that job in 2008. He remained with the company in the role of special adviser to Steve Jobs.

Before joining Apple, Fadell briefly worked with RealNetworks, pitching the company on the idea of a hard drive-based music player. The company didn’t take to the idea, so Fadell took the idea to Apple, after only six weeks with Real.

As to his future plans: “My primary focus will be helping the environment by working with consumer green-tech companies,” Fadell told The New York Times in an interview. “I’m determined to tell my kids and grandkids amazing stories beyond my iPod and iPhone ones.”

Kenwood AS-iP70 converges picture frame, alarm clock, FM radio and iPhone dock into one

We know, you’ve seen enough iDevice docks to make your eyes bleed with frustration, but if your bedside table is growing a bit cluttered with all the appendages and chargers you have lying around, you might wanna check this one out. Kenwood’s 7-inch AS-iP70 can serve as a picture viewer, a music player, an alarm clock, or an FM radio, while also packing USB and SD card inputs for alternative media sources. All in all, it looks quite slick and has plenty of buttons to play around with, but be warned that its 800 x 480 resolution is intended for pictures only, there’s no video playback to be had. If that and the ¥25,000 sticker (about $270, launching in Japan this April) have you running scared, you might want to check out Sony’s cheaper, AVI-playing alternative right over here. More pictures of Kenwood’s new hotness can be found at the source.

Keepin’ it real fake: ‘new’ iPad is the jumbo iPod you always wanted, coming April 3

Tired of all those “jumbo iPhone” jibes you keep hearing about the iPad? So are we, but there’s simply no other way to describe this priceless Shenzhen knockoff than as a supersized iPod. Featuring the unmistakable click wheel and what looks like some sort of riff on Apple’s Mac OS, the “new” iPad will be on sale immediately alongside Apple’s offering, this April 3, for 2,000 Yuan ($290). Of course, we doubt Shenzhen Huayi’s distribution network will stretch quite all the way to the USA, but given the population of 1.3 billion people in China, someone’s bound to be happy to help you out. What say you — does this 4GB pen-friendly beastie do anything for you?

[Thanks, Taimur]
