Oh, sure — you’ve got a smorgasbord of virtual machine clients out there for the iDevice in your life, but you haven’t had this one. Until today, of course. Splashtop (the former DeviceVM) has just unleashed its Remote Desktop app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, enabling users to funnel Windows PC content onto their handheld. The catch is an obvious one — you’ll need a WiFi connection to make the magic happen, though we’re assuming you wouldn’t even want to imagine how sluggish the process would be over 3G. The company claims that this app will let users “watch movies, listen to music, or access any other Windows files and programs, including full web browsers with Flash,” and you’ll need a WiFi-connected Win7, Vista or WinXP machine nearby to take advantage. We’ve got a feeling this won’t work nearly as well as advertised (sorry, it’s just the nature of tunneling / emulation), but those willing to take the plunge can tap into the App Store as we speak.

If you’ve got Comcast service and an iOS device, there’s no reason you can’t download the brand spanking new Xfinity TV DVR remote app right now, but it won’t have the software’s spiffiest feature — direct-to-device streaming video. That’s set to roll out in either “a couple of weeks” or “by the end of the year,” depending on which Comcast representative you ask, and we got to try it for ourselves (along with the rest of the app) at the Web 2.0 Summit this week. Right now the featureset is fairly limited — you just pick programs from a guide and either watch them, beam them to your TV, or tell your DVR to record — but what is there was leagues more intuitive than a physical remote and about as responsive as we could hope for. Comcast tells us that Apple itself helped insure the user experience was polished, and it showed in every swipe and tap we made. Find out more and watch the app in action after the break!

We’re all expecting iOS 4.2 to hit sometime this week and bring AirPlay streaming with it, and it looks like iHome is getting prepared — the company just updated its AirPlay speaker dock page with more info. The iW1, as it’s been named, is much slicker than its minimalist looks would suggest: the portable speaker system features a built-in lithium-ion battery with an inductive charging base so you can just grab and go, Bongiovi Accoustics audio, capacitive touch controls and support for iHome’s iOS configuration apps, and a USB port for charging and local audio playback. Oh, and it can stream music from iOS devices and iTunes using AirPlay, of course. Sadly, there’s still no price or ship date, but if this thing is priced anywhere close to earth we’d say the Sonos S5 has got itself some serious competition.

As expected, Sprint’s just announced the ZTE Peel for the iPod touch will arrive on November 14th. The $79 slider case for Apple’s media player features a built-in mobile WiFi hotspot, essentially turning your iPod into a bulky iPhone without a native phone or SMS app. Of course, you’ll still be stuck paying Sprint for a $29/mo data plan, but you’ll be able to connect up to two devices to the Peel’s WiFi as well, so that’s a plus. Another big plus: since the iPod thinks it’s on WiFi, you’ll be able to use FaceTime on the road — something we’ve tried using a MiFi with pretty decent results. Of course, you’ll be saddled with a big fat case around your oh-so-slim iPod, and we can’t imagine why the Peel is limited to WEP when it comes to security, but we’ll definitely applaud Sprint for attitude when it comes to iOS devices on its network— now just kick out a 4G Peel and we’ll be all set. Truth be told, it’s exactly what the world needed. More 3D gimmickry… on the iPhone and iPod touch, no less. With over 125 million of those two devices in circulation, Hasbro’s betting that a new accessory will have a greater-than-average chance at taking off next Spring, with the My3D goggles set to put the View back in ViewMaster. Purportedly, the toy firm is expected to fully reveal the device to investors later today, with it being “aimed at both children and adults” and offering a 3D viewing experience on games, virtual travel, augmented reality apps and entertainment content. The device itself resembles a set of binoculars, and just as the aforementioned ViewMaster, there’s a slot where you place your iPod touch or iPhone. Users will have to browse the App Store for compatible My3D content, with some of it to be offered up gratis. We’re guessing more than a few curious consumers will bite at just $30, but how hard would it have been to get this thing onto store shelves next month? A holiday opportunity missed, Hasbro.
