Hasta La Gadget!

The headline pretty much reveals the brunt of it, but indeed, it looks like next week Google is going to start talking about how its Chrome operating system is coming along. Multiple sources have told us that Google will be holding some sort of event on Tuesday, December 7th — we’re not sure if it’ll be a live event, a webcast, or something else entirely — and that the shindig will see the launch of that Google-branded Chrome OS netbook we’ve been hearing about. Again, we’ve heard that the Atom-powered laptop isn’t going to be a mass market device — there will only be around 65,000 units available to Google’s closest “friends and family” — and that the Cloud-based OS is still very much in a beta, non-consumer-friendly state. It’s a bit odd that we still haven’t received an invite to this planned event since it’s purportedly days away, not to mention it conflicts with the All Things D: Dive Into Mobile Event, but at the time of publishing this post we had yet to hear back from Google’s PR team with an official comment.

Of course, this all lines up with TechCrunch‘s report that Google will be launching its Chrome Web / App Store very soon, as well as yesterday’s launch of Chrome 8, which supports those aforementioned Chrome apps. (Companies like TweetDeck have already started demoing their browser apps.) Don’t forget that those apps are going to be a large part of the OS, so it would make sense for Google to talk about ’em in tandem. The pieces sure do seem to be fitting together quite well, and while we still have lots of unanswered questions, we’re feeling confident that we’ll be getting some official answers on all this Chrome-ness very soon.

Update: AllThingsD has also heard a similar December 7th launch date of the Chrome Web Store. The evidence seems to be mounting here…

Update 2: Well, there you have it, Google just sent out invites for its December 7th Chrome event! We will be there!

If your tablet wishlist includes things like Tegra 2, Android 2.2, and 1080p video playback, you might want to drop by your nearest Office Depot some time soonish. ViewSonic’s G Tablet has just been made available for purchase at the store’s many outlets across the US and is also supposed to be up for grabs at its online portal. We say “supposed” because we can’t find it anywhere on officedepot.com, but that’s probably just a temporary issue. The main point is that $399 will buy you a seat on the Froyo tablet bandwagon, a very glossy 10-inch seat with 1024 x 600 resolution. Skip past the break for the full PR.

Sharp’s evolutionary tablets are coming, people. It’s just that they’re coming to Japan and they’re not going to be terribly affordable when they do arrive. The Kin maker has just revealed a December 10 launch date for its Mobile and Home Galapagos models — a 5.5-inch slate with 1024 x 600 resolution and a 10.8-incher with 1366 x 800 resolution, respectively — pricing them at ¥39,800 ($474) and ¥54,800 ($653) for the Japanese market. As usual, direct currency translations are inadvisable, but if you must have a price comparison of some sort, the larger Galapagos model (equipped with an 8GB microSDHC storage card) costs ¥4,000 less than Apple’s 32GB WiFi-only iPad. Of course, the big differentiator in Sharp’s mind will be the e-bookstore and content ecosystem it’s working so hard to create for these Galapagos terminals — the value of which has yet to be determined.

We’ve been hearing about Cox’s intention to make a splash in the wireless space for a good long while, but today the cable company’s finally made that move official. The venture will start off with three markets — Hampton Roads, VA, Omaha, NE, and Orange County, CA — and the big selling points will include MoneyBack Minutes, which gives you cash back for disused minutes, and free usage alerts to help you avoid gnarly overage charges. Bloomberg reports that service will be provided using Sprint’s 3G airwaves for now, with Cox building out its own network for the future. Tie-ins with the company’s other services include DVR-controlling software coming preinstalled on handsets, along with one free upgrade (such as a free premium channel like HBO) if you’re already using any of Cox’s landline, internet or cable services. We can’t say that sounds like a bad deal, and the phone selection includes the HTC Desire at $70 on a two-year contract. Skip past the break for the full PR.

Get your SIMs ready, dear readers, for the unlocked GSM Pre 2 has made its promised debut on HP’s online outlet. In spite of looking all too similar to its predecessors, this 1GHz device is still the best (read: only) option for getting your webOS 2.0 action going, so if you simply must have that experience on your smartphone, it’s a no-brainer of a decision. HP will ship it to you in exchange for $450 and if all goes to plan, you could be swiping cards off your home screen in buttery smooth fashion by this time tomorrow.
