You can’t have all this 3D stuff happening on the home entertainment front without it trickling down to smartphones, right? Sharp’s already planning to bring its autostereoscopic wares to US shores at some point during 2011 and today LG’s busy showing off a prototype of its own, right here at CES. It’s a 4.3-inch panel, pumping out glasses-free 3D (using the parallax barrier method) and is presently embedded in an enormous demo box, but the ultimate goal is to have it in media-centric handsets. To be honest, yes, there’s some glasses-free 3D effect going on, but for the most part we just noticed the two frames splitting and didn’t find the video before us enhanced in any major way. The best parts might even have been the ones that didn’t have any 3D-ification applied to them — the display on show is certainly a lucid and bright one. Korean company LG was the first manufacturer in the world to announce a smartphone equipped with a dual-core Tegra 2 processor (aka a “superphone”). However, LG has yet to find a carrier in the United States to sell the beefy handset; so far it’s only officially available in Korea and a few European countries.
Hopefully LG finds a carrier in the states soon, because from my hands-on testing of the Optimus 2X, it’s a fast, solid Android phone. Plus, it has a cool feature to hook it up to an external display.

Considering the size of the label here relative to the size of the device itself, this certainly seems like a tablet (rather than a phone) that hit the FCC’s filing system this week from LG — and when you add in the fact that it’s got certification on T-Mobile’s AWS 3G band, that pretty much seals the deal. Not a lot to see here yet, but the fact that the G-Slate’s got its certification squared away might indicate that it won’t be far behind the Dell Streak 7 that’s launching in the next few weeks. Frankly, we’re a little jealous that the FCC test lab people got to spend time with Honeycomb — any chance Engadget can be an FCC-approved test lab? What’s the process there?

WiFi Direct, for those not paying attention in class, is a communications protocol for allowing devices with wireless radios to talk to one another and share files without the need for an intermediary WiFi access point between them. Basically, it’s like blasting out an ad hoc wireless network, one that permits simultaneous file transfers to up to eight other WiFi Direct-capable machines. LG kindly gave us a peek at its implementation in the Optimus Black, and while things are still pretty rough and (not) ready, we got a decent idea of how they’ll operate. We can’t imagine how this might have slipped your attention, but LG and Motorola used this year’s CES to roll out the smartphone world’s first dual-core devices in the shape of the Atrix 4G and Optimus 2X. Both are built around NVIDIA’s 1GHz Tegra 2 chip, which has been the most popular thing out here in Vegas after the free food and shuttle rides (Moto even has the Droid Bionic, a 4.3-incher bound for Verizon, using it). But what does that extra core matter to you? Well, aside from facilitating 1080p video playback on both phones, it does make them quite formidable mobile gaming stations. NVIDIA took the time to show us a couple of games being handled with ease by the 2X and Atrix before noting that it isn’t leaving it entirely up to Google to provide the compelling content for its hardware. Gaming is, after all, close to the GeForce maker’s heart, and we were told that NVIDIA is working closely with developers to help them exploit the added firepower of Tegra 2 so as to deliver prettier, shinier things on screen. We were also informed of the introduction of a Tegra Zone, an Android app designed to serve as a showcase of Tegra partners’ wares, whether they be video or gaming content, though you shouldn’t fear the specter of fragmentation here — it’s not a separate app store, any purchases will be directed through the Android Market. Anyhow, enough talking, there’s video to be watched after the break.

LG said it’d be unleashing its LTE-rocking Revolution promptly at 2PM local time, and well, we were ready. The phone is pretty snappy in its current form, and DLNA SmartShare worked like a charm, the menu was snappy, and the hardware felt pretty sturdy. We didn’t get a chance to try out the camera, unfortunately, and LG’s still unsure to what extent it’ll skin over the Android OS. Check out the pics (update: and video) below!

Would you look at that. Verizon’s ongoing press conference has been accompanied by the appearance of two 4.3-inch LTE handsets coming to the network. Both HTC’s Thunderbolt and LG’s Revolution were pretty well known in advance, but hey, now we have big luscious high-res pictures to gawk at. The Revolution will come with Android 2.2 preloaded while the Thunderbolt has Skype video calling integrated right into HTC Sense. The latter device also boasts a Super LCD display, 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording, DLNA, Dolby Surround Sound, and the honor of being a Verizon exclusive in the US. Now that the devices have been made official, we also know that the Revolution can stream, play and record HD video, perform video chat with a front-facing camera, and share its 4G connection with up to eight devices through its built-in hotspot functionality. We knew it was coming, but we didn’t know what it would look like… or anything else besides 4G, Honeycomb, and an LG partnership, but at it’s press event here at CES, T-Mobile has finally revealed its G-Slate tablet. It looks like, well, a big screen, and we’re still working on getting more details, but for now these shots from the presser will have to suffice.
