Pakistani Company Uses WikiLeaks to Sell Feminine Pads

wikileaks_napkins.jpg

WikiLeaks means a lot of very different things to a lot of very different people. But this? Well, this is just…different… A Pakistani company is invoking the name of the controversial whistle blowing site in a new ad for its feminine hygiene product, the Butterfly.

Thanks to advertising agency RG Blue Communications, there are now a number of billboards in the country’s financial capital of Karachi carrying the slogan, “WikiLeaks … Butterfly doesn’t.”

The agency claims to have “received a very good response,” thanks in no small part to the fact that it’s gone viral via Twitter and Facebook. RG Blue’s art director Munir Bhatti explains the ad thusly, “I could have also shown a girl like other ads have. But the idea was to make it very different and to use the word WikiLeaks–and that’s what this is.”

Fair enough, Munir. Fair Enough.

Julian Assange Freed on Bail

“It’s great to smell fresh air again,” Julian Assange told a crowd, greeted by camera flashes and enthusiastic cheers. After eight nights in jail, the Australian-born founder of WikiLeaks founder had a small but detectable smile on his face.

Assange had been kept in solitary confinement in a Victorian British prison after being charged with sexual assault by two women in Sweden. The Internet activist used the opportunity to thank a list of people (though none by name), including his supporters, lawyers, and members of the press.

He also thanked the British justice system, stating, “If justice is not always an outcome, at least it is not dead yet.” Freed on bail, Assange is expected to stay at the home of journalist Vaughan Smith.

Yahoo Layoff Memo Surfaces

carol-bartz_shocker.jpg

It would have pretty tough for Yahoo to have had worse timing on this one–just a week out from Christmas. It’s a subject that Carol Bartz doesn’t really broach in her internal memo. Rather she chooses to focus on what the changes at the company mean for the coming year.

Bartz’s internal layoff memo surfaced this week, explaining away the recent four percent staff cut the company underwent. “You’ve heard me say before that I didn’t come to cut Yahoo! to greatness. That’s still true,” Bartz explains in the memo, going on to explain that the cuts were “about more than cost savings.”

Its not a particularly empathetic letter, but these things never are. Bartz tells her staff that “we need fewer Yahoos in some areas, and different types of Yahoos in others.” The company is cutting “underperforming and non-core product,” to focus on stronger properties “like e-mail, the homepage, search, mobile, advertising, content, and more.” All in all, it’s sounding a bit reminiscent of the whole peanut butter thing from a few years back.

Bartz then shifts for “one last thing before I go,” a focus on the “growth” and “turnaround” the company is experiencing.

All in all, it’s a pretty bummer end for what’s been a pretty quite year from the once-dominant search company.

Google Bumbled Spotify Acquisition – Report

spotify_logo-copy1.jpg

According to a recent report, Google was seriously considering a purchase of European music streaming service Spotify, but ultimately got gunked up by its own inner-workings. The company was ultimately doomed by its lack of a a clear, central plan.

Three Google departments were apparently working to control the service post-acquisition. The company ultimately dropped its bid, due to the lack of focus. The company is built to have departments be self-driven, rather than requiring everyone to answer to the same chain of command.

That model lets the company be generally more nimble, but on occasion it results in a company-wide traffic jam–that happened to be case with such an in-demand product at Spotify. The most high profile recent example is Chrome, a pet project of founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, despite the wishes of the company’s CEO, Eric Schmidt.

While Google is certainly patting itself on the back for the launch of the service, there’s been a good deal of talk lately of redundancy between Chrome and the company’s own scalable mobile operating system, Android.

The TimeCommand iPhone Dock Controls Other Gadgets Too

TimeCommand Dock

Some of us have a ton of electronic devices on our nightstand: phones in chargers, alarm clocks, media players, radios, lamps, and more. Imagine what life would be like if one gadget would charge your phone, wake you up in the morning, play music and even turn your light on or off based on a time you specify. That’s what you get with the TimeCommand docking station
Simply dock your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad on the top and use the mobile app to program the alarm, radio stations or playlists you want to wake up to, and if you have a lamp with an incandescent bulb, you can plug the lamp into the plug on the dock to have the TimeCommand turn the lamp on or off when you specify.
You can even tell the dock to slowly raise or lower the brightness for easier waking or sleeping, and it has battery backups so you’ll never miss an alarm. The TimeCommand will set you back $99.95 and is available in Apple retail stores now.

This Unofficial 3-in-1 iPad Camera Connector Has SD Card Slots

3-in-1 Connector for iPad

It’s not sanctioned by Apple, but over at the M.I.C (Made in China) shop, this 3-in-1 iPad Camera Connector can be yours for approximately $25 US, list price. The kit fits into the 30-pin Dock Connector on the bottom of your iPad, and has a USB port for your camera to connect, and also features two slots for an SD card and a MicroSD card if you need to plug the card from your camera or phone into your iPad to transfer photos.
The kit comes in white and black, and is available now. Since the product isn’t official, there’s no way to tell if Apple will pull something in a future iOS update to disable the functionality, but if you find yourself with more SD cards than USB cables, this might be a quick way to get your photos off of the card and onto your iPad.

bird_gulf_oil.jpg

This June 16th tweet from Stephen Colbert about the Gulf oil spill is 2010’s most retweeted: “In honor of oil-soaked birds, ‘tweets’ are now ‘gurgles.’ ” Twitter presented the talk show host with the first-ever Golden Tweet, the site’s co-founder Biz Stone appearing on the show to hand it off.

Rapper Drake took the number two spot (“We always ignore the ones who adore us, and adore the ones who ignore us”), followed by fellow musicians Lil Wayne (“Aaaaaaahhhhhhmmmmm baaaaakkkkkkkkkk!”) and Justin Bieber (“Te quiero mucho mi amor”).

Tweets from a fake Al-Qaeda account (“Just noticed Twitter keeps prompting me to “Add a location to your tweets”. Not falling for that one”), Kanye West (“I’m sorry Taylor”), and Rianna (“Justin Bieber just flashed me his abs in the middle of a restaurant! Wow! He actually had a lil 6 pack! Sexy, lol! #Beliebersplzdontkillme”) made the list as well.

Air Force Blocks Access to News Sites Over WikiLeaks

old_newspaper.jpg

The U.S. Air Force this week announced that it has blocked personnel access to a number of high profile news sites after they published information from the embattled whistle blowing site WikiLeaks. We heard about this news through The New York Times–members of the Air Force, not so much.

The Times was blocked on the Air Force’s computer network, along with 25 other news organizations, including England’s The Guardian, Germany’s Der Spiegel, France’s Le Monde, and Spain’s El País.

“News media Websites will be blocked if they post classified documents from the WikiLeaks Website,” Air Force spokesperson Lt. Col. Brenda Campbell told The Times. “This is similar to how we’d block any other Web site that posted classified information.”

The Army, Navy, and Marines have not taken similar action, relying on directions from the White House and Defense Department telling federal employees to not read any of the WikiLeaks-published classified materials.

“Extensive Experience,” “Motivated” Most Overused LinkedIn Buzzwords

Business social networking site LinkedIn today released its list of the “top 10 buzzwords” for 2010. The company’s analytics team pulled the most “cliched and overused phrases” from the site’s 85 million profiles.

“Extensive experience” tops the list in the US, followed by “innovated,” “motivated,” “results-oriented,” and “dynamic.” Hey, while you’re online changing your Gawker password, why not hop on to LinkedIn and freshen up your profile a bit?

Buzzwords, it turns out, are surprisingly universal. “Extensive experience” also topped the list in Canada and Australia. “Dynamic” was the top pick in Brazil, India, and Spain. “Motivated” popped up more than any other in the UK, and “innovative” was the most popular in France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
