Photo Gift: Induro 5-Way Pan Head for DSLRs, Video Cameras

Induro_panhead.jpg

Ever set up your tripod on uneven ground, then the camera or video camera tilts up or down as you pan, no matter how carefully you thought you leveled the legs? Replace your tripod head with an Induro PHQ five-way panhead. The five-way adjustments, five bubble levels, and two panning locks let you get the platform perfectly level and then you apply further tilt and pan adjustments to your heart’s content. It’s great for still cameras and video cameras. The Induro PHQ1 ($315 street) supports 25 pounds; the Induro PHQ3 ($395) supports 35 pounds. The top plate is compatible with Arca-Swiss quick-release mounting plates, the industry standard.

Empire Strikes Back Director Dies

irvkershner.jpg

Director Irvin Kershner died this Saturday in Los Angeles. Kershner, 87, was probably best known for directing the second–and darkest–film in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Kershner was already a fairly well-known name before taking the Star Wars directing mantle from George Lucas. After graduating from the University of Southern California film school in the 50s, Kershner broke into director via government serials in the Middle East.

In 1958, he directed the pulpy Stakeout on Dope Street for Roger Corman, going on to shoot films starting the likes of George C. Scott, Sean Connery, and Faye Dunaway, and receiving an Emmy nod for a 1976 TV movie.

Post-Empire, Kershner directed a number of other big budget films, including Robocop 2 and the 1983 bond movie, Never Say Never Again.

April 12, 1954: The Most Boring Day in History

Abdullah Atalar.jpg

What was the most boring day in history? Is it really possible to designated one? It seems like something is always going on in the world, right? A Cambridge, England computer scientist named William Tunstall-Pedoe believes he has discovered it, using a program called True Knowledge.

Tunstall-Pedoe fed the program 300 million news facts, including people, places, and events. Complex algorithms were crunched, and the computer zeroed in on April 12, 1954 as the most boring day in history.

What manner of earth shattering events occurred on that historic day? A soccer player named Jack Shufflebotham was born–also Turkish academic, Abdullah Atalar [Pictured]. Oh, and an election was held in Belgium. And that, really, is about it. Snoozfest, right?

Says Tunstall-Pedoe,

Nobody significant died that day, no major events apparently occurred and, although a typical day in the 20th century has many notable people being born, for some reason that day had only one who might make that claim – Abdullah Atalar, a Turkish academic.

The irony is, though, that – having done the calculation – the day is interesting for being exceptionally boring. Unless, that is, you are Abdullah Atalar.

Happy boring belated birthday, Abdullah Atalar.

Snow White Apple Laptop Decal: Cheap Holiday Gift for a Geek

il_570xN.192428934.jpg

Are you the kind of person who always has their face glued to their laptop? Were you too busy reading up on the latest rumors of iPad 2 or Digg’s inevitable decline that you didn’t even realize what time of year it is? Well, snap out of it, geek face! It’s Christmastime! And you better start showing some season’s spirits!

Or else!

Luckily, the fine people at ImageLab3 are here to help you celebrate the holidays (within the parameters of ironic geek chic) with their Snow White Christmas Apple decal for your laptop.

This December, proclaim a tech-infused Noel to the world with the iconic visage of beloved little person wrangler, Snow White as she prepares to chomp down on the iconic Apple trademark while wearing a colorful Santa cap.

A-friggin-dorable!

Afraid to mark your laptop with too much holiday joy? No worries, the decal (15″ MacBook: $14.99; 11″ MacBook Air: $9.99 — plus $2.00 shipping) can be removed easily once the 26th comes around.

Christmas Snow White is the latest seasonal installment of ImageLab’s line of Snow White Apple Decals (available for a variety of Apple products and models) including: regular, geek, emo, and sexy.

Have a Very Slayer Christmas

It’s that time of year again! The colorful lights go up, the snow comes down, and there’s a bit of that indescribable magic in the air. Like most people, the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Christmas is, of course, Slayer. Yes, even that most evil of thrash bands can’t help but get into the season’s spirit of giving and brotherhood.

That’s why one enterprising lad has created this choreographed Christmas light extravaganza to the soundtrack of the classic holiday diddy “Raining Blood.”

This blast of yuletide fury was from 2009, and creator lacycute20 (who posted the video to his daughter’s YouTube account, so there’s lots of Justin Bieber and Ke$ha videos sharing space on the account) promises to have an all new choreography up for this year.

But for now, enjoy the Christmas wrath.

“Tangled” Geek Easter Eggs

tangled-poster.jpg

Tangled, the new Disney Rapunzel movie, is pretty much the last place I expected to see a “Blade Runner” reference. But even beyond the spectacular animation and charming characters, there’s the occasional wink to geekdom in Disney’s new princess feature.
My theory: Pixar now basically runs Disney. And Pixar is a bunch of super-smart geeks. The easter eggs in Tangled aren’t the heavy-handed brickbats you see in second-rate animated movies. They’re more on the level of the shout-outs to “Firefly” in the TV show “Castle” – funny if you see ’em, not bothersome if you don’t.
Or, I could be crazy. Tell me if I’m crazy.
Beware, very minor spoilers ahead – but wait a minute – are spoiler warnings even relevant for a Disney princess movie? Really now, people.
  • One character is introduced as a collector of tiny porcelain unicorns. Later, at a moment of crisis, another character sees a porcelain unicorn, which signals that the unicorn-collector is watching him. You just can’t do that in film today without it being a nod to how Gaff is watching Deckard in Blade Runner, leaving behind an origami unicorn as a sign of his presence (as well as potentially 73 other things, because that movie is deep). Right? Right?
  • You could argue that “Chuck”‘s Zachary Levi is a bit of a geek icon. But Nathan Fillion is a much bigger geek icon. And the main character Levi so ably voices, Flynn Rider, is totally patterned after Nathan Fillion. I mean, come on – “the smolder?” Fillion gave his blessing to the film with a wink on his Twitter feed.
  • Okay. So you have a quasi-Nathan Fillion. And you have a talking, somewhat superpowered horse. Do you see where I’m going here? At one point Flynn Rider says to the horse, “You … are a bad horse!” And everyone who saw Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog said, “The thoroughbred of sin!”
Okay, am I crazy? Because, let me tell you this: my daughter is almost five. She sang herself to sleep with a song from the movie tonight. I’m probably going to be watching Disney’s Tangled many, many more times.

Google Doodle Gets Delicious for Thanksgiving

google_doodle_thanksgiving10.jpg

Google turned over its doodle to Barefoot Contessa host Ina Garten, for a second straight day, but where only the Os were made up of foodstuff yesterday, today’s doodle is an entire feast–turkey, sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts, popovers, cranberries, and a pie.

Hovering over the edible letters will pop up a large image and a description, and clicking will offering up a full recipe page. Clock’s ticking–get cooking!

More than Half of Americans Check Work E-mail on Thanksgiving

Thumbnail image for lady_turkey.jpg

Happy Thanksgiving–now get to work! According to numbers from third-party Microsoft Outlook plug-in Xobni (“inbox” backwards–get it?), 59 percent of working Americans check their work e-mail on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other work-free holidays

The company conducted survey and found that of that 59 percent, 55 percent check their work inbox at least once a day, and 28 percent do so more than once. Xboni senior exec Josh Jacobson suggested that pressure from high unemployment numbers is pushing employees to check in on work more often.

The increase also no doubt owes much to the fact that many working Americans carry their inboxes on them at all times, thanks to smartphones, laptops, and other mobile devices.

The survey also found that roughly 41 percent of workers “feel annoyed, frustrated, or resentful” about getting work e-mails on the holidays.

Hopefully they’re more positive about reading gadget blogs on Thanksgiving.

Kuwait Bans DSLR Cameras

Kuwait - Skyline

If you’re planning a trip to Kuwait, don’t take your DSLR Camera. The country’s Ministry of information, Ministry of Social Affairs, and the Ministry of Finance have all effectively banned the cameras in Kuwait, making it illegal to use DSLRs in public places unless you can prove that you’re a journalist and using the camera for journalistic purposes.
The ban has left a number of people – mostly outside of the country – confused as to what precipitated the ban, since small compact cameras are still legal, as are cell phone cameras, but there’s naturally going to be a chilling effect as tourists and the general public in the country simply decide not to use their cameras instead of try to explain to the authorities that their specific camera is legal.
There’s no official word from the Kuwaiti government on why they banned DSLRs in the first place, or what the effect will be on photographers or artists in the country who want to take photos in public, but if you’re planning a trip to the middle eastern country, what your airline’s baggage handlers will do with your DSLR should be the least of your worries now.
