Giant wall console lets you Game & Watch while you wait

Before there was a 3DS and DS — heck, before there was a Game Boy, there was Game & Watch, Nintendo’s portable, sometimes dual-screened gaming line from the ’80s. But while the gaming giant has long since moved on, nostalgia for their platform-based frustration lives on in the form of this large piece of interactive wall art, a case that uses an Arduino and Python script to bring folks with a little spare time the sort of retro gaming that will make them long from the graphical power of the original NES. Install Windows 8 onto your HTC Shift today, give it a reason to wake up in the morning (video)

If you’ve got an HTC Shift sitting around that’s collecting dust and not doing much else, it could find a new lease on life with the revelation of its (very unofficial) support for Windows 8. Like they did for Mac OS X previously, the folks at xda-developers have shoehorned Microsoft’s latest Developer Preview OS onto the dejected UMPC, and so long as you’ve got a bit of spare time, the right equipment and are good at following instructions, you can too. All the basic driver support appears to be in order, including support for video acceleration, the touchscreen and WiFi. Granted, you should keep in mind you’ll be installing pre-release software on unsupported hardware, but isn’t that half the fun? Since you can’t upgrade the GPU or add more RAM to your smartphone, there’s really only one way to improve upon an already impressive handset like the Epic 4G Touch — root it. It hasn’t been on the market for very long, but the crafty hackers over at XDA forums have already figured out how to open up the phone to your every whim. The crack is “experimental” at this point, so proceed with caution. You’ll also need to have both Kies and Odin 3 up and running, which makes this a Windows-only treatment at the moment. You’re cruisin’ in your sweet ride when all of a sudden you realize exactly what your set of wheels is missing: Webtop. While the vast majority of us may shrug off the thought, convincing ourselves that our 3.5mm jack or cassette player is plenty to keep us mindlessly entertained through the morning commute, one man with the know-how dared to be different. All of that blazing-fast LTE pumping out of his Droid Bionic was being wasted, after all, so why not outfit his car’s AV setup with Webtop and HDMI mirroring capabilities to blast Netflix on his dash and multiple screens in the back for the kiddies? Lion Ultimatum brings desktop-like functionality and file manager to jailbroken iOS (video)

Sure, OS X Lion borrowed many of its design cues from Apple’s iOS platform, but now users of jailbroken iPhone and iPod Touch devices may bring much of the desktop Mac’s functionality onto their handset with Lion Ultimatum. In essence, this beta project is a theme for Dreamboard (which is required software), but it’s rather far-reaching, with a functional file manager and Finder menus, a scrollable dock and draggable windows, along with Stacks, Launchpad, Mission Control and Dashboard. There’s also a customizable lock screen that provides access to the dialer, email and messages. Even the keyboard can be modified to resemble the design of MacBook Pro or the traditional Apple Keyboard, thanks to integration with ColorKeyboard. Touchstone mod blesses Samsung Epic 4G Touch with inductive charging powers

The Touchstone’s future is just as unclear as any other webOS product at the moment, but it’s sure getting a fair share of love from the mod community. Not only did we witness the inductive-charging unit work on a modded Samsung Galaxy S Plus, a bold and daring AndroidCentral Forums member also accomplished the feat on his three-day-old Epic 4G Touch in a process that’s definitely not for the faint of heart. The modder (who goes by the name of “darrenf” on the forum) offers a full step-by-step guide on exactly how to do it, but advises that it’s “a pretty delicate mod” and attempting it will likely void any warranties or return policies that were attached to the phone when purchased. It also doesn’t result in the most aesthetically pleasing look since the charging coil had to be attached to the outside of the phone, but it’s gotta give you some massive street cred if you pull it off, right?

Harrison Krix may never actually be invited to join Daft Punk, but at the very least, he’ll likely have the coolest Halloween costume in the room for pretty much the rest of his life. It’s true, we’ve seen plenty of folks have a go at the French electronic duo’s signature headware in the past — including one from Krix himself — but few if any have shown quite the attention to detail as this project from the Atlanta-based graphic designer. At the center of the project is an Arduino-controlled LED with text that can be changed over WiFi with an iOS device. Relive the four month project in the three and a half minute video after the jump. Fusion Micro mod weds PSP and GameCube hardware, but battery won’t last the honeymoon

It may not be the first console we’ve seen modded and squeezed into portable clothing, but we’ve got to admire the sheer pluck of cramming all the GameCube’s goodnesss into PSP hardware. Modder Ashen, also responsible for the stockier GameCube Fusion, has managed just that, with some heavy-duty adjustments and modifications. The Fusion Micro is a fair bit chunkier than the original PSP, mainly due to the fan and heat sink behind all that busy hardware. Other modifications include an extra analog stick on the right to mimic the GameCube controller and two card slots for games and emulation. Despite this impressive engineering, however, it won’t stand up to extensive plays; this unholy union of Nintendo and Sony can only squeeze out about two hours of gaming from its 5000mAh battery. Keeping an eye on your server health isn’t the most romantic of pastimes. That’s what compelled modder mkanoap to build a computer-free monitoring system that was as cheerily simple as Xymon’s red-yellow-green symbols. His solution? Install an ethernet-enabled Arduino into a stoplight and mount it on the wall of the office. On one hand, the cubicle creativity factor just has to be commended, but on the other, we’re guessing it’s not an entirely selfless endeavor — it’s not exactly enthralling answering those system status calls, you know? Play Wii games on your Android tablet via network streaming (video)

In case you haven’t met him already, Obiwan222222 represents the minimalist alternative to hardcore modding. He’s already shown us Wii games running on the PSP and iPod Touch, and now he’s pulled off the same trick on his Asus Transformer. It’s all done with network streaming: he loads up Super Mario Galaxy 2 on his PC using the open-source Dolphin emulator and then transmits it to his tablet via the Splashtop HD remote desktop app for Android. He also throws in an Xbox 360 controller to make things look more confusing than they really are. We’d obviously worry about lag with this type of setup, but the video after the break makes it look just about playable.
