HP Mini 1103 released for business people on a budget

Devastated that you won’t be able to nab an HP Slate 500 in time for the holidays? How about a brand new HP business netbook as a consolation? The Mini 1103 looks a lot like the consumer Mini 210 but drops the colorful lid options as it’s more for Suits in search of an affordable mini-laptop. Starting at $299, the 10.1-inch netbook is available with Intel Atom N455 and N475 processor options, 1GB of RAM, three- and six-cell batteries, and your choice of Windows 7 Starter, SUSE Linux, or FreeDOS OS. Obviously, if you’re looking for a higher-end netbook with an HD display, touchscreen, dual-core processor, and more durable aluminum lid, there’s still the $399 Mini 5103, but the Mini 1103 does have HP’s business applications, including QuickSync and QuickWeb. Toys R Us Black Friday doorbuster includes $80 netbook, $140 Sylvania tablet

Believe it or not, America’s favorite holiday is under a fortnight away. And this year, it looks as if Toys R Us won’t even wait for Thanksgiving Day to conclude before forcing employees behind registers and breaking families apart as they seek out lukewarm deals camouflaged as revolutionary purchases. This year, Black Friday begins at 10PM on Thanksgiving Eve, meaning that quite a few desperate souls will be lined up in a parking lot rather than circling a stuffed bird and chuckling with loved ones. The culprit? Two devices in particular. The first is an unnamed 7-inch netbook, complete with WiFi, three USB sockets, a sub-two pound weight, a red chassis and a mind-scrambling $79.99 price tag. The second is a 7-inch Sylvania tablet, sporting Android 2.1, WiFi and an SD card slot; we’re assuming it’s the same unit Kmart is hawking for $180, but Toys R Us will have it for the low, low price of $139.99. Other hidden treasures include a Vivitar point-and-shoot for $39.99, 7-inch Coby digiframe for $24.99 and a Vivitar pocket camcorder for just $19.99. We know your gears are already turning, but lest we forget that time with family is priceless… right?

Jolibook no longer camera shy, opens its lid on Flickr

Well, thar she blows — the Jolicloud Jolibook. You’ve seen the teaser images and the official specs, but the 10.1-inch netbook is finally showing its keyboard deck and rear in a set of official press shots. Most of the information you need is in that gallery below, but just like we saw in the other images, its lid is skinned with a crowded cartoon scene while its back is home to a bulging battery (though, one shot shows it with a smaller cell). Under the cover it looks to have a fairly standard plastic panel complete with a chiclet keyboard that happens to look strikingly similar in styling to that on the recent Acer Aspire One systems. We’re hoping that all plastic build translates to a seriously low starting price, but naturally, we’re still waiting on that last nugget of information. We dare you to check out the shots in the gallery below and try saying “Jolicloud Jolibook” three times fast!

Jolibook is the official netbook of Jolicloud, coming this month?

Just a few weeks ago, we got word (by way of a few Tweets) that Jolicloud was seemingly — if the images were any indication — in the final stages of developing a netbook of its own. Well, we’ve just gotten some official news on just that topic. The Jolibook, as it’s going to be known, is of mostly unknown specifications at this point, but here’s what we do know: the Jolicloud 1.1-powered laptop will boast an Atom N550 CPU, and a 250GB hard drive. Jolicloud also says that the netbook’s display will boast a “gorgeous” screen and an affordable price. Sadly, that’s all we know for now, though the company is promising that all this is going down this month, so we’re going to keep our eyes peeled for you.

LG X170 netbook controls your phone, adds SmartPOP to the lexicon

We’re guessing that this newfangled SmartPOP feature works a lot like Lenovo’s Constant Connect (or perhaps LG’s own Air Sync?), but either way, the feature set is still fairly innovative. On the surface, LG is today introducing its X170 netbook — a 10.1-incher with an Atom N455 (or N550), 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive and integrated Intel GMA 3150 graphics. But it’s the accompanying SmartPOP feature that’s really worth a second glance; purportedly, the system utilizes Bluetooth 3.0 in order to connect to your LG phone (supported models haven’t been made public thus far) and do all sorts of things. Syncing your files and email is just the beginning — once you’re in, you can send an SMS, view contacts / files and dial a phone number from the comfort of your PC. We’re guessing that future uses will be somewhat more impressive than existing ones, but you’ve got to start somewhere, right? Word on the street has this one going for just under $700 in South Korea, and we’re definitely hoping that mobile there is included for that price.

ASUS Eee PC 1215T with AMD Neo on sale now

Been waiting on an Eee PC 1215N with an AMD Neo processor? Or how about an Eee PC 1015T with a 12.1-inch display? We know, you need a damn almanac to keep up with all of ASUS’ netbooks, but if you have in fact been waiting on the respective strengths of those two Eee PC variants, the company’s got you covered with its new 1215T. Forgoing the Intel Atom / NVIDIA Ion 2 combo for a single core 1.7GHz AMD Athlon K125 processor, the 12.1-inch notbook (our word for a machine that’s not really a netbook anymore) packs 2GB of RAM, an 320GB hard drive and Windows 7 Home Premium. The system looks to have the same chassis as the $485 Eee PC 1215N we reviewed not too long ago, but instead rings up at around $436 on Amazon right now. We obviously haven’t tested the AMD version nor have we seen any reviews, but we’d venture to guess that while you may save $50, you’ll give up the better battery life of the Intel / Ion-powered 1215N — the AMD Neo laptops we’ve tested haven’t lasted longer than four hours on a charge. That’s just our hunch, but hey, don’t let us stop you from hitting that source link and ordering one right now.

ASUS Eee PC 1015T now on sale, complete with AMD V105 CPU

So, the mystery’s solved. If you’ll recall, we spotted ASUS’ Eee PC 1015T sittin’ pretty at Computex, but considering that the OS was wiped by the time we got to it, we were left to take the placard’s word for it when it came to specifications. Now, B&H has begun to offer this bad boy here in the States, with $349.99 nabbing you a 1.2GHz AMD V105 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB (5400RPM) hard drive, ATI’s Mobility Radeon HD 4250, a 10.1-inch LED-backlit panel, inbuilt webcam, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, a 32-bit copy of Windows 7 Starter and a six-cell battery. All told, it rings up at 2.8 pounds and should last anywhere between three and six hours on a full charge, but we’re guessing real-world performance will swing towards the former. It’s available right now in blue, black and white, and if you’re looking for a way to stick it to Intel’s sluggish Atom line, here it is.

Netbooks are being ‘cannibalized,’ says Windows GM

Tablet sales affecting netbooks? Seems everyone’s been suggesting that lately, from Best Buy to ASUS, with much of the blame placed on Apple’s iPad for mining the gap, so to speak. Add Microsoft to that chorus — specifically GM for Windows Product Management Gavriella Schuster. Referencing the pink netbook sitting between her and Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Nick Eaton, Schuster said, “These are definitely getting cannibalized… these are really a second device. But they are getting cannibalized” (SPI’s emphasis, not ours). Given Windows’ dominance in the netbooks, she’s probably got some hush-hush numbers that color her opinion. Then again, speaking of color, perhaps she just doesn’t like pink.

ASUS finally ships Lamborghini Eee PC VX6, but mind that gas guzzler tax

It was introduced way back in June, but it looks as if ASUS has just now gotten its ducks in a row with regard to this speedster. The 12.1-inch Lamborghini Eee PC VX6 is now shipping across the pond, offering an Intel Atom D525 processor, NVIDIA Optimus graphics and Bang & Olufsen audio. It’s available from a host of retailers for £499 ($798), and there’s precisely zero doubt that you’ll be buying one.
