Verizon sucks at Photoshop: confuses the Droid X for an iPhone

Man, Motorola’s not going to be pleased about this! The Droid X is justifiably one of Verizon’s marquee devices for this holiday season and takes pride of place on the carrier’s Cyber Monday offers page, but wait… why does its screen display the iPhone version of Google Maps? Oops!

[Thanks, Chris]

CyberNotes: “Photoshop” Your Photos with FACEinHOLE

This article was written on March 22, 2008 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Weekend Website

If you’re looking for something fun to do with your mounds and mounds of digital photos, look no further than a fairly new website called FACEinHOLE.com.  At first glance it’s nothing special, but it is one of those sites you’ll have to at least check out once, just for fun. And it’s simple enough that even those that aren’t so tech-savvy can do it too.

What is FACEinHOLE

FACEinHOLE is a site that allows you to take one of your photos and upload it into one of their prepared scenarios.  It’ll look like you used Photoshop except you don’t actually have to put the work in to get results. You’ll see what I mean in just a minute by prepared scenarios. They have a variety to choose from and it reminds me of when you’re at an amusement park and they have the wood cut-outs where you can go stick your face in the hole and have your picture taken. Getting results takes just seconds.

Below are a few examples of the “prepared scenarios” so you get an idea of what they are. On their site, all of the scenarios are divided into categories which include:

  • Advertising
  • Film & TV
  • Greeting Cards
  • Kids
  • Miscellaneous
  • Music
  • People & Celebrities
  • Sports

You can view them by most popular, or most recently added. You can also view the whole collection on one page. Below are the prepared scenarios for Shrek, James Bond, Austin Powers, Star Wars, Spiderman, and Harry Potter.

Creating a Scenario

If you find a scenario you like while browsing through them, you can easily use it . At the top of the scenario will be the option to select your image source whether it be from a Webcam or an Image file (it must be JPG). Once your photo has either been uploaded or taken with your webcam, you can start the process of editing the photo and adjusting it so it looks just right.

Adjusting Your Scenario

To make your scenario look as real as possible, you’ll want to make some adjustments. Adjustments that you can make include:

  • move it around
  • make it larger or smaller
  • rotate it
  • adjust the brightness
  • adjust the hue/saturation

The image below shows the tools that are available to you:

Results

After I was done tweaking my photos, I ended up with these results:

Steve Jobs as Indiana Jones and Bill Gates as Harry Potter:

Sharing Your FACEinHOLE:

Once you’re done, there are buttons to save and print your creation. You can also quickly post to the following sites:

  • MySpace
  • Bebo
  • Live Spaces
  • Friendster
  • Piczo
  • Facebook
  • Blogger
  • Hi5
  • and more…

If you have a blog you’d like to put it on you can also just copy a line of code and then paste it to any site. Overall FACEinHOLE is fun place to visit when you’re looking for something fun to do with your photos. It’ll look like you spent some time using Photoshop when in reality, you just spent a minute or two uploading your photo to the service and making a few minor adjustments.

Apple sucks at Photoshop too

Ladies and gentlemen, presenting the new fourth-generation iPod touch: it’s so much like an iPhone that it has a Phone app (wait, what?). Better yet, if you do a Spotlight search on it, it’ll return results from a messaging app it’s not supposed to have. How’s that for value? This would all be a great big enigmatic mystery if we weren’t ourselves familiar with the practice (and pitfalls) of splicing disparate images into unholy creations. Well, at least now Microsoft isn’t alone in making self-published Photoshop gaffes.

P.S. — There’s one more misplaced app on this magical device, but we’ll let you figure it out for yourself!

[Thanks, Michael and Rory]

Update: Apple’s now finally rid itself of the ignoble image above, but the lower two remain.

Photoshop Crashes onto iPad

Photoshop and the iPad, a pairing as natural as Bert sharing a bed with Ernie. As of today, you can use Adobe’s legendary image-editing app on your tablet. Or maybe not.

Photoshop Express is a reworking of the rather more awkwardly-named Photoshop.com Mobile for the iPhone. It is now a universal app, running on both devices, but there are some iPad-specific features. But before we get to those, we’ll note one giant problem. For many users, Photoshop just won’t launch.

Tap the icon and you get a splash screen, and then you see a dialog box swirl across the iPad’s display. Then the app closes and, somewhat confusingly, launches another picture-editing app. In my case, this is Photogene. This appears to be a common problem, and some people say a reboot will fix it, although that didn’t work for me. And that dialog box? I grabbed a screenshot: It’s a request to send anonymous usage data back to the mother-ship, titled “Help Us Improve”. Oh Adobe. The fix, now posted on the iTunes store page, is to start up the app in portrait orientation.

If you can fire it up, you can now work in both landscape and portrait modes, work on a sequence of photos at the same time and carry out basic editing. Cropping, rotating, flipping and adjustment of exposure, color and contrast are all easily done. From there, you can upload to photoshop.com and Facebook, or just save the files locally.

It’s nowhere near as powerful as the desktop version or even (somewhat ironically) as full-featured as iPad apps like Photogene. It is free, however. It’s also pretty cool to be able to tell your friends that you have Photoshop on your iPad. Available now.

BlueAnt Q2 Bluetooth headset enables noise-free calls during Usain Bolt’s sprints

It’s not guaranteed to make you any smarter, but having such an intelligent little bird upside your ear may at least give you a minor boost in confidence. A full 1.5 years after the original Q1 made its debut, BlueAnt is introducing its Q2 Smart Bluetooth Headset. Aside from being able to cancel out noise while traveling at up to 22mph (read: Usain Bolt’s average walking speed), the Q2 also touts a fully integrated text-to-speech feature that belts out news, weather, sports and the latest gossip from Microsoft’s Bing 411. And if you just so happen to use a smartphone with Android 2.0 or newer, it’ll actually read your text messages and emails aloud without you having to fish your handset out of your britches. It’s available now at AT&T stores for $129, and just in case you’re wondering, you can freak mall walkers out for five solid hours without needing a recharge. Not that we’d encourage such behavior.
