Should the classy white, or the patriotic red and blue PlayStation controllers not take your fancy, Sony’s rolling out another hue just for you, discerning consumer: pink! The Japanese maker of everything with an electronic pulse has a bit of a tradition with this color and it’s not like the great PS3 hasn’t been licked by a few strokes of red lite before. Pricing is your typical $54.99 for this wireless console commander and GameStop should have them in within a couple of weeks.

Sony Qriocity on-demand movie service extends into Europe, ‘Music Unlimited’ coming by year’s end

Sony has just informed Euroland that its Qriocity on-demand ecosystem will be showing up in the continent’s wealthier regions this fall. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK will get a chance to savor the Video On Demand option, which will form the vanguard of a wideranging content streaming service, available on Sony networked devices — yes, that includes the do-it-all PlayStation 3. The heavyweight movie studios behind the venture include 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, NBC Universal, Paramount and, of course, Sony’s moviemaking arm. But you already knew that, given that the whole enchilada’s been available to American gringos since April. All Qriocity participants will get to use a new Music Unlimited service, which is launching by the end of the year with as yet undetermined pricing. Plans are also afoot to offer Qriocity on third party devices, but until then you’ll wanna make sure to have one of them newfangled web-connected Bravia TVs or any of the litany of Blu-ray players and home theater setups Sony is busy promoting right this minute.

PlayStation Move review

The PlayStation Move. It’s funny to think just 15 months have passed since Sony first unveiled its motion controller, and now we’re mere weeks away from hitting the retail market. To be sure, it’s not like the company didn’t have waggle on the mind already — patents dating as far back as 2005 reveal as much, and of course the incredible success of Nintendo’s Wii proved there’s a market for more physically exerting gameplay. And it’s not just PlayStation; Microsoft’s got its controller-free Kinect motion camera system coming this November. So, in the year where all major game consoles now ask you to get off the couch and earn arm muscle, how does Move fare? Read on for more!

Play Your PS3 like an XBox 360 with the Nyko Raven Controller

Nyko Raven Wireless ControllerIf you ask gamers whether they prefer the controller that ships with the PlayStation 3 or the one that comes with the XBox 360, you’ll probably get passionate defenders on either side, but most will likely choose the XBox 360 controller, mostly because of the way it fits in your hands and the placement of the buttons. If you’re one of those gamers who really wish they could use their XBox 360 controller on their PS3, the new Nyko Raven Wireless Controller for the PlayStation 3 is a dream come true.

The Raven looks like an XBox 360 controller, and if the buttons weren’t labeled with Sony’s signature square, triangle, circle, and X buttons, you wouldn’t think it was for the PS3. The entire controller is covered in rubberized plastic so it won’t slip during long, sweaty-palmed gaming sessions, and has a 25-foot range. It uses a rechargeable battery that can be connected to mini-USB for power, and alert lights that let you know when power is scarce. Best of all, the controller has motion and rumble support, so you don’t lose features by buying a new controller. The Nyko Raven can be yours for $34.99 list.

G-Mate Mag Gun controller for Xbox and PS3 gets FCC approval; we’d like to see them try and stop it

Hopefully you had your Campbell’s Chunky Fully Loaded Beef Stew this morning, because it takes a Man to look down the barrel of the G-Mate Mag Gun and live. The weapon just passed through the FCC unscathed, and now it’s gunning for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The basic operation is simple enough, with triggers, face buttons, a d-pad and everything else you’d need to ape a modern console controller. There’s only one analog nub, but that’s of course because the gun’s own motion is meant to emulate the second. G-Mate isn’t so clear on how that part of the gun works, but from what we can glean, it’s basically an accelerometer and / or gyroscope, which you calibrate to the center of your particular screen with a dedicated button. A sensitivity knob completes the Mag Gun-specific functionality — which probably won’t revolutionize the FPS genre, but certainly might give those suspicious of the Move or too masculine for the XCM Fire something to watch out for. Sony execs talk PlayStation Move expectations, PS4 details

The PlayStation Move is now less than a month from hitting stores shelves, and it looks like some Sony execs are already busy starting to manage expectations. Speaking with Eurogamer this week, Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president Ray Maguire chose to compare the Move’s launch to that of the EyeToy for the PlayStation 2, saying that “exactly as with EyeToy in the PS2 days, it’s a product that needs to be sampled. You need to get your hands on it. You need to understand it. You need to try it.” Maguire further went on to say he’s “not particularly” expecting “massive” day one sales, but that he expects sales to grow as word of mouth spreads. In other PlayStation news, Sony’s Kaz Hirai seems to have effectively ruled out a download-only future for the eventual PS4 in an interview with MCV, with him saying that a “digital future is over ten years away.” Hirai then went on to note that “we do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn’t as robust as one would hope,” and that “here’s always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium.” No word if that also applies to Sony’s future handhelds as well.

Sony phasing out 120GB and 250GB PS3 SKUs, the latter now going for $299 at Fry’s

From a supply chain management standpoint, this all makes sense — why have four separate PS3 SKUs with various HDD sizes when just a pair will do? After announcing last week that a 160GB and 320GB PS3 Slim would be making landfall in the US and Europe, it seems as if Sony has decided to phase out the existing 120GB and 250GB flavors. There’s no definitive word on when production on those will stop (we’re surmising that the stop order has already been placed), but it looks as if some retailers are already starting up fire sales on the now-old models. For those curious, that’s a Fry’s installation pictured above, which is selling their leftover 250GB units for just $299, or the same price as the incoming 160GB unit. Decisions, decisions…

160GB PS3 Slim, 320GB Move bundle coming to US and Europe this fall

The leaks weren’t wrong, they just weren’t the whole story. A 160GB PlayStation 3 Slim is indeed coming to the US — Europe, too — but additionally, there’s a heftier 320GB Sports Champions Move bundle. The former standalone console is available now stateside for $299, and according to the GamesCom press conference, Europeans will have to wait until October for 299 Euros. As for the biggie, which includes the game and one-player Move package, that’s due out September 19th in US (or September 15th across the pond) for $399 and 349 Euros, respectively — just in time for holiday shopping sprees.

160GB PS3 slim spotted on GameStop’s website

One of the following just occurred today: either a GameStop employee just spilled the beans on an upcoming Sony announcement, or someone in the retailer’s IT department has a cruel sense of humor. At any rate, IGN spotted a listing today (since removed) for a slim PlayStation 3 with 160GB of storage, purported to be shipping today for $299.99. That’s unfortunately not the case, but while we’d wager a capacity increase is inevitable, it’d be infinitely more intriguing if that new hard drive came part and parcel with a pallette swap — something in white, perhaps. Hey, we can dream. It might be worth noting that Sony’s got a press conference lined up at GamesCom for mid-afternoon ET tomorrow; we’ll keep our German-trained ear to the ground, just in case.

Update: Newegg is now showing the same deal as above, with a projected arrival date of August 19 [Thanks, Disaresta51].
