There’s no question that gaming on the Android platform has heretofore been relatively underwhelming, but that looks like it’s all about to change. It seems that Sony Ericsson — a company that has yet to even introduce an Android 2.0 device — is at work on a project to redefine gaming on Google’s mobile platform. We now know (via a trusted source) that the company is actively and heavily developing a brand new gaming platform, ecosystem, and device (possibly alongside Google) which are already in the late stages of planning. And we’ve got the goods on it.

The recently released PS3 firmware 3.41 seemed to just be a minor update that added a new “You May Like” section to the PlayStation Store, but it looks like it’s been causing nothing but headaches for anyone trying to upgrade the hard drive in their console. As a 30-page strong thread on the official PlayStation forums reveals, folks upgrading their hard drive have been getting a “no applicable data” error after trying to install the update, which has left them with a non-working PS3 and, in some cases, a corrupted original drive. According to CVG, the issue may have something to do with a newly discovered feature of the 3.41 update that allows for more incremental patches, which might also explain why the problem only seems to be affecting PS3s where the firmware is stored in on the hard drive instead of the system’s memory. As for Sony, it hasn’t offered an official explanation just yet, but all indications are that it’s a bug and not an intentional blocking of hard drive upgrades — at least we hope it is. The HTC HD2 did it, and so did the iPhone 3GS (assuming you jailbroke), but now you can get your blocky amnesiac ex-SOLDIER action on Android courtesy of ZodTTD and yongzh. Their PSX4Droid app just launched on the Android Market for $5.99, and — despite a few glitches — it emulates PlayStation games like a charm, complete with multiple scaling modes and save states. Watch a Galaxy S rock the likes of Final Fantasy VII and Ridge Racer after the break, plus Crash Bandicoot on a Nexus One and some paired Wiimote action with a Dell Streak. Then, challenge yourself to adhere to intellectual property law instead of immediately hunting down ROMs and a BIOS file. We dare you.

How will sir be having his gimmick today? The devs behind the upcoming Sly Cooper 3D compilation are wisely mulling over the idea of inserting a 3D-adjusting slider to let users decide just how much stereoscopy they want with their Sony-approved gaming. It’s argued that this should allow you greater positional flexibility when smacking fools down in three dimensions, as you’ll be able to manually toggle the depth of the 3D effect to suit your viewing angle. We were happy to see such an option introduced in the Nintendo 3DS at E3 and would similarly welcome its inclusion on the PS3 — though that’s no foregone conclusion as yet. All we can say for sure right now is that the stuff is adjustable, but it looks like it’ll be up to devs to roll their sleeves up and integrate the slider into their games. Hey, it’s the summer, not like they’ve got anything else to do, right?

The Sony Defense Force has reason to celebrate today, as the circle is now complete — where Netflix HD once spited PS3 for Xbox 360, today Hulu Plus has chosen the PlayStation for limited console exclusivity through the end of the year. Today, “a select group” of PlayStation Plus subscribers can download the Hulu Plus app and start watching immediately, while regular ol’ paying members can ask nicely (via the same app) and wait patiently for the privilege of shelling out an additional $10 a month. Those who aren’t dropping $50 a year on PlayStation Plus aren’t entirely out of luck, they’ll just have to wait till the end of the preview period to get their Hulu on.
