Video: Sony confirms it’s ‘bringing home 3D’ starting in 2010

As it turns out, yesterday’s report was spot-on. Sony today announced that it is bringing the experience of looking absolutely ridiculous in 3D glasses home to the living room. The initiative is “starting in 2010” and will expand through BRAVIA LCD HDTVs, VAIO machines, PlayStation 3, and Blu-ray discs… and not in the press release, but we clearly see a CyberShot digital camera in the promotional video (look out, Fujifilm). It’s hard to say from the wording if all the listed product lines will go 3D next year, but from what we gather there’ll at least be BRAVIA sets in time for that Christmas. 74 percent of PS3 owners have watched a Blu-ray, but how many have watched two?

Sony may be working to expand the perception of the PS3 as a media powerhouse with half-hearted bundles and new advertising campaigns, but according to SCEA Director of PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel, it’s already doing quite well in that department. He indicates that 74 percent of all PS3 users have “spent some time” watching Blu-ray movies, with barely a quarter left shunning the machine’s high-def creds. Of course, the real question for Sony’s sake is how many have gone ahead and purchased some of those fancy discs, a stat that Lempel doesn’t share, but regardless we have to think it’s time for Sony to stop putting tedious advertisements for Blu-ray players at the beginning of its Blu-ray discs — we’ve already got one, you see? It’s very nice!

Sony Ericsson Aino’s PS3 Remote Play capabilities get detailed — no games, just media playback

Sony’s got a lot of housekeeping to do before it can quell the infighting long enough to produce a proper PlayStation phone, but the upcoming Aino‘s PS3 Remote Play features sound like a tentative first step. According to a Q&A posted on the Euro PlayStation blog, the upcoming slider handset will be able to use Remote Play to connect and control a PS3’s XMB through the internet, but you won’t be able to play PS1 games like you can on the PSP — you’ll be limited to media playback, browsing the PlayStation Store, and chatting on PSN. Yeah, it’s kind of a missed opportunity, but at least we can hope future handsets will expand on the capability a little, just like the PSP had remote PS1 game playback added in after the fact. We’ll find out when the first Ainos ship in the UK in October.

Sony to debut 3D BRAVIA TVs by end of 2010, also eyeing 3D VAIOs, Blu-ray films, and PS3 games?

The Financial Times has it on good word what the major unveil in Sony chief Sir Howard Stringer’s keynote tomorrow at IFA 2009 will, so much so that it’s quoting him with phrases he hasn’t even said yet. According to the report, the company is making a huge push into the third dimension, with 3D BRAVIA HDTVs hitting the retail channels by the end of 2010. Also on the menu is 3D-compatible PlayStation 3 titles (which we’ve kind of heard before), VAIO laptops, and Blu-ray movies, but it’s unclear from the article if they shares the same 2010 timeline. Polarized glasses will be required for use, but hey, just consider it a fashion statement. We’re now very anxious to see how close Sir Stringer sticks to this purported script for tomorrow’s big event.

PlayStation 3 firmware 3.0 now available

Right on schedule, PlayStation 3 firmware 3.0 is now out and being fed directly into your console (should you opt to download it, at least), offering a number of changes to the user interface and Trophies section and animated themes with avatars. Be sure to come back and let us know what you think!

Update: We’re running the update now and the changelog that shows up on the PS3 has two new features we hadn’t heard about: simultaneous audio output across connectors and control of video playback (slow motion, fast forward and rewind) using the right stick. Nice!

Video: Retractible wireless Rock Band / Guitar Hero controller perfect for the five-button shredder on the go

Guitar Hero and Rock Band‘s plastic axes aren’t exactly behemoths in their own right, but if you need something even tinier, little-known game accessories company NEXiLUX looks to have a more portable solution in the works. The video for its mini guitar isn’t the clearest, but from we can see, the body is about the same size as the retracted neck, which expands from behind the touch-sensitive pads to reveal the infamous quintet of colored buttons. D-pad, navigation buttons, whammy bar, and pickup selection have all survived the compression, and to make each unit as universal as possible, there’s a switch on the bottom for choosing between either Guitar Hero for Wii or Rock Band for Wii, PlayStation 2, and PS3. Both black and white models are seen here, but there’s no mention either in-video or on the company’s website of price or release date. See it for yourself after the break.

PS3 Slim already sold out at many a retail store

The fine folks at GameSpot called around in San Francisco to find that many of their local GameStops and Best Buys have been selling the PS3 Slim, but some have already sold out of their first shipments. Our own calls to a few New York GameStops showed that they’d sold out of their first shipments as well (so much for that September 1 ship date, huh?) and were expecting their next shipment early next week. We also know plenty of folks who’ve had no trouble scoring one online, but who knows how long that supply will last. How about you, any luck tracking down this not-so-elusive console? Personally, we’re still waiting on the go-ahead from our main man Kevin Butler to believe any of this is true.

PlayStation 3 Slim review

Even before Sony’s big unveil earlier this month at Cologne GamesCom, it felt like we already knew the PlayStation 3 Slim quite intimately. A leak from back in May gave us a glimpse of every angle of the hardware’s exterior, and even the final retail box. At that point, we didn’t know what to make of it, and the change in logo font definitely threw us off. Three months, thirty seconds of video, and a dash of legal paperwork later, and we’re looking at that very same leaked device, now taking up space adjacent to our hefty 60GB “Classic” model from launch day. Unquestionably, it’s smaller and lighter, but how else has Sony’s Blu-ray-playing console evolved — or regressed — over these past few years? Read on to find out!
