Originally scheduled to ship on September 19th, this external CableCARD TV tuner is now available from Amazon, New Egg and other retailers for $300. Shuttle launches XPC H7 5820S mini PC for your collection of 16 monitors

Wondering what do with those 16 monitors you’ve got lying around your house? Well, the folks over at Shuttle have just come out with a mouthful of a solution, known as the XPC H7 5820S. Shuttle’s latest mini-PC is powered by an Intel Core i7 processor with up to six cores, boasts 16GB of RAM and features a pair of 1TB hard disks. The workstation, compatible with Windows 7, also ships with a Blu-ray burner and packs Matrox‘s M-Series multi-display graphics cards, allowing users to work across 16 different displays at once, at resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 per screen. All this goodness is nestled within a box that’s just 7.5 inches tall, though it won’t come for cheap. According to SlashGear, the XPC H7 5820S is now available for a cool €1,446, or about $1,983. Nokia Lumia 800 shipping in November for $585, available for pre-order now

Nokia has just announced that its recently unveiled Lumia 800 will begin shipping in November to select markets, for around €420, or about $585. It’ll roll out next month across France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK, before making its way to Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan, by the close of 2011. The Lumia 710, meanwhile, is priced at €270 (around $376), and will be available in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan by the end of this year. Major Chinese supplier halts rare earths production in attempt to boost prices

With prices sliding and uncertainty rising, China’s biggest producer of rare earth minerals has suddenly decided to suspend all operations, in a move that could strain already tense relations with the West. Baotou Steel, a miner, refiner and vendor located in Inner Mongolia, announced the decision in a statement today, explaining that it’s simply looking to “balance supply and demand” in response to a prolonged price slump within China. Since June, in fact, prices of neodymium oxide and europium oxide have declined by 34 and 35 percent, respectively, with many analysts attributing the drop to mounting economic uncertainty in the US and Europe. Earlier this year, the Chinese government announced plans to merge or close some 35 rare earths producers within the mineral-rich northern region of Inner Mongolia, effectively crowning Baotou Steel as the industry’s epicenter. Now, of course, that’s all changed, though the shutdown will only last for one month. It’s also worth noting that China still exerts rather considerable influence upon the market, accounting for roughly 97 percent of all production of rare earths — a group of 17 minerals used to manufacture gadgets like cellphones, flat-screen TVs and EV batteries, among others. And while new deposits and market projections may point to a transforming landscape, it’s unlikely that Chinese influence will wane anytime soon — much to the chagrin of Western free trade advocates.

NEC’s Tele Scouter head-mounted display makes it really hard to not look evil

Case in point: the guy on the right. Sure, he’s probably a mild-mannered, law-abiding citizen, but with NEC‘s Tele Scouter strapped to his spectacles, he looks just a wee bit sinister, doesn’t he? The system he’s wearing consists of a paperback-sized computer powered by an ARM 500MHz CPU and an AirScouter display mounted atop a pair of glasses. The display, manufactured by Brother, projects images upon the naked eye, but NEC insists that it won’t completely block a user’s field of vision. To the viewer, in fact, these projections appear as if they were displayed on a 16-inch, 800 x 600 screen standing one meter away. According to NEC, the idea is to allow employees to view manuals or other important documents while working with their hands, though that kind of multi-task wizardry certainly won’t come for cheap. The Tele Scouter will begin shipping on December 26th, with the device priced at ¥400,000 (about $5,200) and the software sitting at ¥1.9 million (around $25,000).

Japan’s NTT DoCoMo announces Samsung Nexus Prime ahead of Ice Cream Sandwich event

We’re still a few hours away from Samsung and Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich event, but Japan’s NTT DoCoMo has already jumped the gun on one of Sammy’s most anticipated announcements — the Nexus Prime. Today, the provider confirmed that it’ll be “among the fastest” to bring the new handset to market, adding that the Nexus Prime will be on sale in November. Unfortunately, the company didn’t get any more specific with regard to release dates, price or specs, but we’ll be sure to bring you the latest as soon as we get it. Gamecube-free Wii refresh heads to North America, competes with more versatile predecessor

Usually when a hardware refresh axes a major feature, it gets a comparable price drop. Not for Nintendo’s waggle star, however — the gamecube-free Wii refresh we’ve seen advertised for Europe is heading to North America for the same price as its backwards-compatible kin. $150 will get you a black console designed to lay on its side and streamlined to play only Wii software, a Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack and a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. All well and good, except that Nintendo’s press release (which you’ll find after the break) also promises that the existing Wii bundle will stick around, packing Mario Kart Wii, a Wii Wheel, backwards compatibility for Gamecube games and the very same $150 price tag as the downgraded redesign. Mark your Christmas wishlists carefully folks, this one’s a doozy.

Verizon pricing, release windows for Galaxy Nexus, HTC Rezound revealed

One of our tipsters has forwarded this info from Verizon, with pricing and advertising dates for the supposedly Ice Cream Sandwich-ready Galaxy Nexus and the HTC Rezound (aka HTC Vigor). According to the leak we can expect both to sport on contract minimum advertised pricing (MAP) of $299 when they launch. While their MAP period is pegged to start November 10th, as Droid-Life points out, they may not be released immediately. Still, it means you may have a couple more weeks to save up for one of these superphones and now that you have a target you can make sure your swear jar, piggy bank, or emergency slush fund is up to the task.

Nokia outs colorful 603 handset, coupled with NFC-equipped Luna Bluetooth headset

The leaves in your yard may be transitioning to the more subdued hues of autumn, but Nokia’s new 603 smartphone certainly isn’t. Available in six different back cover colors, this new Symbian Belle handset is powered by a 1GHz processor and boasts a 3.5-inch, capacitive touchscreen with 640 x 360 resolution. It also comes with 2GB of internal memory, a 32GB microSD slot and five megapixel camera, along with full NFC and Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities. Speaking of which, the folks in Espoo have also taken this opportunity to unveil their new Luna Bluetooth headset — an NFC-enabled, in-ear accessory that delivers up to eight hours of extended talk time, as well as a rainbow of colors (see an image after the break). As far as pricing goes, the 603 will set you back €200 (about $275), with the Luna headset sitting at €70 (around $96). SlingPlayer app now available for Honeycomb tablets, priced at $30

It was teased back in September and now, it’s finally arrived — the SlingPlayer Android app optimized specifically for Honeycomb tablets. Available today on the Android Market, Sling Media’s latest app allows Slingbox owners to stream TV directly to their slates, and features a new program guide, designed to help users browse content and change channels with greater ease. The SlingPlayer app for Android handsets, meanwhile, will continue to function on tablets in “compatibility mode,” without exacting extra charges, though it won’t offer the same resolution quality you’ll find on a Honeycomb-laced device.
