HP TouchPad price drop goes permanent (update: confirmed)

Pricing has long been one of our biggest concerns with HP’s webOS-tastic TouchPad. So, when the company offered up a $100 discount on the slate, things certainly seemed headed in the right direction. The drop was only tease, sadly, and the price went right back to normal levels two days later. Apparently consumers liked the price cut as well, and HP, in turn, liked that, moving the company to implement the reduction on a more permanent basis. This is according to a reported internal memo from the company highlighting the decision to permanently price the 16GB and 32GB WiFi versions of the tablet at $399 and $499 “effective immediately.”

Update: We just heard back from an HP representative, who confirmed the pricing is indeed legit and in fact is in effect on HP’s site.

HDI 3D to ship new line of 3D projectors next year, we mortgage our homes

We were pretty impressed when we got the chance to gaze at HDI 3D’s silky smooth, 43-inch 3D LCD last year, which is why our eyes widened when the company announced that it’s begun producing a new line of 3D projectors, slated for release as early as 2012. First up in the awkwardly named Laser-Driven 2D/3D Switchable Dynamic Video Projector series is the LSS Pro 1 (pictured above) — a tank that’s powered by as many as two Laser-Drive Engines and capable of displaying both 2D and 3D images on HDI’s 300 inch Laser Silver Screen. A full 100 of the systems will be available on February 14th as part of a pre-production run, but they certainly won’t be cheap, with prices ranging from $55,000 to $85,000. As many as five similar models are expected to begin shipping by the end of next year, including the Industrial, Origami and Polygon. Nintendo to release Flame Red 3DS console next month, sunglasses not included

Better dust off your finest pair of shades, because this Flame Red Nintendo 3DS is on its way to the States. The console, which launched earlier this summer in Japan as the Red Flare, will hit stores next month (alongside the new Star Fox 64 3D game), joining a 3DS lineup that already features Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue. The company will also be releasing two new games this winter — Super Mario 3D Land in November and Mario Kart 7 in December — in the hopes of rectifying its disappointing Q2 earnings report with a strong holiday campaign. Only time will tell whether or not it has any effect on Nintendo’s bottom line, but if you’re interested in adding a touch of Santa-like cheer to your yuletide gaming season, you can grab a Flame Red console on September 9th, for $170. Australia’s first mobile network celebrates 30th birthday with a quiet night in

Why is this phone staring at the ground in dismay? Because it can’t believe that it’s been 30 years since it made history. On this day three decades ago, this 14 kilogram beast was used to place the very first call on Australia’s very first mobile network — the Public Automatic Telephone System, operated by Telstra (or Telecom, as it was known at the time). Back then, the network could only support 1,000 users at once and provide coverage for the greater Melbourne area (things have since changed for the better). The device, meanwhile, was known simply as The Mobile Phone and, in retrospect, wasn’t all that mobile; the carphone system included a 45 centimeter handset, a transceiver and rooftop antenna — all for a little over $5,000. It could also store a whopping 16 phone numbers and would notify users of incoming calls by sounding the car’s horn and flashing its headlights. The Mobile Phone’s Australian reign, however, would be relatively short-lived, with the DynaTAC 8000x ushering in a new handheld era, just two years after Telstra’s inaugural call. HP TouchPad 4G surfaces for pre-order on Amazon, wearing $700 price tag

It looks like the HP TouchPad 4G is inching its way closer to the market, now that the webOS tablet has made a pre-order appearance on Amazon. According to the listing, the 32GB slate will retail for a cool $700, sans contract — about $100 more than its exclusively WiFi, equal-sized brethren. Given HP’s recent discount spree, however, it may not be long before that price gets knocked down a few notches. Over the weekend, in fact, the company announced yet another promotion, offering $50 worth of App Catalog credit to users who purchased a TouchPad in the US between July 1 and August 4th. Nintendo CEO responds to 3DS price drop backlash

Post-purchase price drops are one of a number of curses that plague early adopters. Generally, however, such shifts take time, so Nintendo caught us all a bit by surprised when it announced that it will be cutting the cost of the 3DS from $249 to $169 in mid-August. The gaming giant was quick to mend fences, offering 20 free virtual console games to those who got burned by the discount. Nintendo’s CEO Satoru Iwata followed up the announcement with a more formal apology to consumers, noting that they may well feel “betrayed” and “punished” for their early adoption. Iwata added that early buyers are still “important” to the company, and that the decision to drop the price was due to concerns on the part of retailers and designers that Nintendo hasn’t released a worthy followup to the ultra-popular DS.

Pandigital unveils Nova, Planet and Star Android tablets, ‘flagship’ device coming next month

It’s shaping up to be a busy month for Pandigital. Two days after we spotted the Nova at Best Buy, the astronomically-inclined company has decided to officially unveil the Android tablet alongside the Planet and Star, with a fourth “flagship” device slated for release in September. Each of the three slates is powered by an A9 Cortex processor, and boasts a seven-inch touchscreen display (800×600 resolution on the Planet and Nova and 800×480 on the Star, pictured above). As far as storage goes, both the Planet and the Star offer 2GB of onboard memory, with the Nova packing 4GB, and all three offer WiFi and HDMI connectivity. The slabs also come preloaded with Barnes & Noble’s eBookstore app and provide access to GetJar’s app download store, rather than the Android Market. Honeycomb enthusiasts, however, should probably look elsewhere, as both the Planet and the Star run Android 2.2 Froyo, while the Nova ships with Gingerbread. But considering their prices, that shortcoming may be easy to overlook. The Planet, available now, will run you $189, as will the Nova, scheduled to ship later this week (though, again, you can also find it on Best Buy, for $170). Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 shows up for pre-order at Amazon.co.uk, ships August 11th

Back when we got word of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 making its British debut on August 4th, Samsung told us that our UK brethren could expect its elusive younger sibling, the 8.9, “later in the year.” Well, if its recently minted Amazon page is correct, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will land across the pond just one week after its big brother, on August 11th. The 3G-sporting Android tablet carries a £605 price tag. Considering its stop off at the FCC in June, and the recent appearance of the Retail Mode app, we hope to see the 8.9 stateside sometime soon. Otherwise, it’ll be off to the UK for you die-hard Galaxy fans.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 appears in leaked T-Mo docs, reveals August 29th release date and $300 price

If you’re an abiding RIM fan who’s itching for a new ‘Berry addiction, your next fix is soon at hand. After AT&T put its cards on the table — along with Sprint and US Cellular — an internal T-Mobile document now suggests the Bold 9900 will arrive at the Magenta-clad carrier on August 29th. Sadly, your patience (and loyalty) is going to cost you, because this touchscreen endeavor carries a $300 price tag, and like Ma Bell’s model, it features only 14.4Mbps HSDPA. Sure it’s steep, but that’s all the better for expensing to the corporate account, no?

Pandigital’s Nova Android tablet hits Best Buy, explodes for $170

Pandigital has added a new star to its growing galaxy of e-readers, with the Nova Digital Reader — a seven-inch, Android 2.3-powered slate that looks awfully similar to that eight-inch Super Nova we recently spotted at the FCC. The tablet, which just popped up at Best Buy, is powered by an 800MHz processor, offers 4GB of internal storage, and features an ActiveTouch display with 800×600 resolution. Much like its forerunners, the Novel and the Planet, the Nova also connects directly to the Barnes and Noble bookstore, and sports a pair of front- and rear-facing cameras. Aside from that, you’ll find the usual 802.11 b/g/n wireless capabilities, a built-in microSD card slot, and a micro HDMI port, all packed within a frame that’s half-an-inch thick. Persuaded?
