VUDU 2.0 interface is live on the PlayStation 3

Just shy of a month after it launched on the PlayStation 3, VUDU has begun delivering its newly revamped interface on the game console. It should be there once the app is opened, but just in case you’re not near a Sixaxis or the (now supported) Move controller check out our gallery for an idea of what the new layout look like. Oh, and if you’re getting your 1080p HDX streaming via a different box or smart TV widget then keep an eye out, the company’s support page say the PS3 and LG devices will be the only ones sporting the new look through January, with all the rest getting it later on.

Sony buys back Toshiba’s Cell plant for 50 billion yen, makes a killing and plans a CMOS fab

Looks like Toshiba’s Cell processor ambitions didn’t quite pan out — Japanese news sources are reporting that the company’s selling its Nagasaki manufacturing plant back to Sony for 50 billion yen, or roughly $597 million in US money. Considering that Toshiba originally purchased the semiconductor facility for 100 90 billion yen (then $835 million) back in 2008, it seems like Sony’s making out like a bandit here — and it may have just found the perfect place to build more CMOS chips for its high-end camera lineup, too. Sony reportedly told the Nikkei Business Daily that it may repurpose the facility to produce HD image sensors for cameras and smartphones. What will happen to the chip that launched 40 million PS3s and a graphics co-processor or two? With any luck, we’ll find out at CES 2011 quite soon.

Ben Heck constructs military-grade, self-contained PlayStation 3 suitcase (video)

If you caught the latest episode of The Ben Heck Show, then you no doubt saw this era’s modding mastermind piece together a PS3 console suitable for use in the wilds of Afghanistan. The military-grade portable gaming system was designed and built for a couple working with the military overseas, and it’s Pelican’s iM2600 Store Case there on the outside keeping things safe and secure from flying shrapnel. As Ben always does, he managed to carefully place an entire PS3 console deep within the confines of the enclosure, and he even threw in an integrated LCD into the lid to prevent any additional external hookups. Generator equals gametime, as they say. Head on past the break for the latest episode, which shows the play-by-play on how it was constructed.

Update: Turns out the folks that Ben built this case for are now taking matters into their own hands. Currently based in Afghanistan, Erica and Kris have founded Rugged Outdoor Gaming Units, Etc (R.O.G.U.E.) in order to build and sell similar hardcore gaming enclosures, or PeliStations. They’re aiming for an early spring release, and we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on them.

Grand Theft Auto IV Gets Rave Reviews

This article was written on April 29, 2008 by CyberNet.

grand theft auto 4.pngAny Grand Theft Auto fans out there? If there are, you already know Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTA) launched at midnight last night and you probably already have your hands on a copy of the game. For the first time, the game launched at the same time for two platforms, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In some cities, like New York, people were in line waiting for the game’s launch before midnight. There was so much anticipation surrounding this game and high expectations were set. From the sounds of it, the game has exceeded those expectations, and all around, people are extremely satisfied with this version of the popular game.

Of course the game wasn’t able to launch without any controversy. The game itself has been a big controversy and always has been because of the violence and the nature of the content (carjacking, prostitutes, etc.). Controversy aside, this game has received absolutely stellar ratings from reviewers. Take a look at some of these scores which we gathered from Wikipedia:

  • Official Xbox Magazine – 9.5/10
  • Official PlayStation Magazine – 10/10
  • GameSpot – 10/10
  • Electronic Gaming Monthly – A+
  • Game Informer – 10/10
  • GameSpy – 5/5
  • GamesRadar – 10/10

Metacritic offers a compilation score of about a dozen reviews and the PS3 version received a perfect 100% while the Xbox 360 version received a 99%. Clearly GTA will be a success for the publisher, Take-Two Interactive Software (their shares rose 3.4% ahead of the midnight launch) who is being sought by Electronic Arts . It sure helps to be launching the game on two platforms at the same time, doesn’t it? Some analysts have predicted that the opening week sales will be about $550 million and that by the end of the year, 10 million copies of the game will have been sold. To put that number into perspective, Halo 3 which was another huge video game launch, brought in $300 million during the first week of sales.

If you managed to get your hands on a copy of the game, let us know what you think…

February Console Stats Still Put Nintendo WAY on Top

This article was written on March 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

xbox ps3 wii stats Have you been wondering how the consoles have been stacking up against each other lately? Don’t worry, you stataholics will be getting your fix in this article. Below you’ll find the top selling hardware/consoles, and then also the top 10 games for the month of February 2008.

So how did the hardware fare against each other? It looks like the PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 for the second month in a row. You also have to take into consideration that there is an Xbox 360 shortage going on until the Spring. I recently went around looking for a store that had them in stock, and was surprised to see that they were actually hard to find. That could be why the Xbox came up 25,000 units short of the PS3, or people might just be more willing to purchase the PS3 since Blu-ray has won the HD format war.

  1. Nintendo DS: 587,600 units
  2. Nintendo Wii: 432,000 units
  3. Playstation 2: 351,800 units
  4. Playstation 3: 280,800 units
  5. Xbox 360: 254,600 units
  6. Playstation Portable: 243,100 units

And as for the games Guitar Hero, Call of Duty 4, and Devil May Cry sucked up over half of the top ten spots:

  1. [Xbox 360] Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – 296,200 units
  2. [Xbox 360] Devil May Cry 4 – 295,200 units
  3. [Wii] Wii Play with Remote – 289,700 units
  4. [PS3] Devil May Cry 4 – 233,500 units
  5. [Wii] Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock – 222,900 units
  6. [Wii] Mario and Sonic: Olympic Games – 205,600 units
  7. [Xbox 360] Lost Odyssey – 203,600 units
  8. [Xbox 360] Turok – 197,700 units
  9. [PS2] Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock – 183,800 units
  10. [Xbox 360] Rock Band – 161,800 units

SNK continues to tickle retro gamers, releases Neo Geo gamepad for PS3

http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/08/neo-geo-games-hit-psn-add-online-play-ditch-the-gigantic-cartr/

Oh man, as if having 10 Neo Geo classics hitting the PS3 and PSP complete with online multiplayer wasn’t sweet enough, now SNK is doing one better by releasing an updated version of the classic Neo Geo gamepad. Sure, it isn’t as majestic as the giant, hulking arcade stick that came in a pair with the $650 Neo Geo Gold System. However, the system’s gamepad (released with the Neo Geo CD) would go on to be even more popular thanks to its much lower cost and novel floating 8-way d-pad. That controller is reborn (again) for the PS3 with USB connectivity the addition of a PS button in the middle, meaning you can even use it to pull up the XMB and taunt your friends into joining a King of Fighters match. Sadly this is only getting a release in Japan, where it sells for 3,129 yen (about $37), but Play-Asia will import you one for $45. Small price for such a lovely thing.

PS3 to start streaming ITV and Channel 4 content in the UK this week

Our British mates aboard the VOD ship may look a little cheerier today as The Guardian reports both ITV and Channel 4 — two of the nation’s foremost commercial channels — are bringing their video catchup services to the PlayStation 3. The ITV Player and 4OD have been available as web-based services for a while, but they’ve both now agreed deals with Sony, who projects their overall traffic will improve by around 10 percent as a result. ITV’s leaving the door wide open for adding its content to “other consoles,” web-connected TVs, and tablets like the iPad, whereas Channel 4 has found Microsoft unforthcoming about Xbox 360 deals and the Wii inhospitable because it doesn’t support advertising. For its part, Sony’s clearly making a big content push, having recently welcomed Lovefilm into the fold and completed the rollout of its Qriocity on-demand facility across Europe. Does anyone even play games on these things anymore?

PlayStation Move Sharpshooter hands-on: a first-party SMG peripheral coming in February

This isn’t the first PlayStation Move peripheral to replicate a firearm, but the Sharpshooter is brought to you by Sony itself, so you expect a higher degree of quality than from the third-party deluge. And if you’re the sort who like to accessorize, it’s a pretty good offering. We had a chance to check it out this morning over a brief round of Killzone 3, which Sony says was the inspiration (along with the upcoming SOCOM). Overall, it’s pretty light and sturdy. The Move controller slides into the front, and the buttons then become mapped around the gun: RL is under the grip, the Move button is just under the trigger, start and select rest on opposite sides of the barrel, and Square / Triangle are mirrored above the trigger, making it easier to reach regardless whether you’re right- or left-handed. There’s a cradle under the stock for the Navigation Controller to rest, the butt is adjustable, and the top has a mount for a scope (no details on that peripheral of a peripheral). There’s additionally a lock button and what seems like burst-fire mode that won’t be used by Killzone 3; the reps told us they spoke with various other developers to make sure the accessory fit their needs as well but couldn’t elaborate more.

So, how did it handle? We’ll say the buttons were all easy to get to, but this accessory is fundamentally not for us. Having to move the entire submachine gun (or your whole body, as it were) to aim felt more unwieldy than simply twisting a wrist like you would with the first-party Shooting attachment (or the Move controller by its lonesome). Speaking of which, the Sharpshooter is lacking in retro aesthetic, something we really liked in the “1950s laser pistol” replica that came out last month. We get the feeling this wasn’t made with us in mind, anyway. Sharpshooter should hit store shelves in February (same month as Killzone 3) for a penny under $40. Looking for something more traditional? A jungle green DualShock 3 is also coming in February for $55. Press release after the break.

Neo Geo games hit PSN, add online play, ditch the gigantic cartridges

Neo Geo games hit PSN, add online play, ditch the gigantic cartridges

If you’re of a certain age, there was one console you wanted more than any other: a Neo Geo. It was so big, so dark, and so freaking expensive it was like a gadget from another time — yet there it was, looking down at you from behind the counter at Babbage’s. $649 in 1990? Yeah. Ouch. Anyway, people today can now experience that machine’s greatness for a much lower price, with the PlayStation Network receiving 10 of the system’s greatest hits, each selling for between $6.99 and $8.99. Yes, these games were already available on the Wii Virtual Console, but the PSN versions will support online competitive and co-operative play, which is truly worth getting excited about. All games will be hitting the PS3 on December 21, while Fatal Fury and Metal Slug will be hitting the PSP then as well. For other games, like Magician Lord and Super Sidekicks, you portable folks will just have to wait until January.
