Hasta La Gadget!

Sure, the catalog of compatible games hasn’t been as hefty as we’d like, but Sony has done quite a bit right with its PlayStation 3 / PSP Remote Play feature. Modder Dashhacker (with special thanks to noted PSP hacker Dark_AleX, among others) has released Open Remote Play v1.1 beta, which lets you take that same Remote Play experience onto your Windows PC or Intel-based Mac. The caveat here is that you’ll still need a PSP handy to set up the application, so don’t go thinking you can bypass the portable altogether. The OS X version apparently works well, but Windows users may ample bugs — it is beta, after all. We haven’t had a chance to try it ourselves yet, but don’t let that stop you from beating us to the punch — just let us know what you think. You know, one of these days, someone at one of these big companies is going to get this right. If you send a cease and desist about “leaked” photos of a supposed device, you’re basically saying, “Hey guys, those pictures are real.” Now, we can’t tell you with 100 percent assurance that that’s the case when it comes to those factory pics of rubber-gloved hands all over an apparently-new PS3 hardware design, but it doesn’t help anyone’s case when a Chinese company sends your Japanese wing a takedown notice. Keep in mind, since this thing isn’t from Sony, we can’t really be sure that it’s the real deal, but we’ll be honest — things are starting to look mighty suspicious. Just try to wrap your minds around this, Harmony / PS3 owners: this weekend is the last weekend that your otherwise awesome universal remote won’t be able to power on your otherwise awesome Blu-ray / media player. Wild, we know. Logitech’s heralded Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3 — which converts the IR blasts coming from your Harmony-branded remote to Bluetooth signals that the console understands — is now shipping. You can pretty much take your pick of e-tailers, but the read link leads to a sweet 10 percent off promotion that’ll save you a few bones compared to buying from Amazon. Whatever the case, the MSRP is $59.99, so feel free to track down the best deal in all your free time.

Not that the original was any sort of tame, but some new, incredibly grainy leaked shots of a PS3 “slim,” if they prove legitimate, point to a pretty wild redesign in store for the console in the near future — not to mention what would be one of the smallest Blu-ray devices we’ve seen yet. There seem to be a lot of similarities to the Slimline PS2, while still holding onto that curvature the PS3 is so well known for, and even squeezing in a slot-loading disc drive and 120GB hard drive. Of course, Sony has issued a pretty strong denial of existing PS3 slim rumors, stating that “We currently don’t have any plans for a redesigned PS3 at this time,” but that’s a pretty common way for Sony to deal with rumors, no matter which way they fall. We’ll probably have to wait until E3 to learn the real truth, but it’s a good bet this won’t be the last true or false rumor to hit about a real or fake console in the run-up to the show. At least this one’s packing pictures.

For over a year you’ve had Sony’s blessing to cradle a black DualShock 3 in your twitchy little fingers, and though that matte covering makes for a perfect primer base should you care to go the RustOleum rattle-can route, that’s still the only color Sony has approved for the US. It’s the only color, Sony repeats, even when presented with the image above, which pretty clearly shows a white DualShock 3 safely encapsulated within North American, bi-lingual packaging — and a Walmart receipt to boot. Sony’s specific response was: “We have no plans to release a white Dualshock 3.” That means either someone carefully sealed an imported gamepad into a domestic package, or this was one of those unplanned releases. Something else to look forward to at E3? Oh youbetcha.

Update: Commenter Four More Beers looked up the UPC and, go figure, it points to the classic black model on Walmart’s site. So, proven hoax, or does Sony also not have any plans to release new UPC codes?
