Microsoft Kinect to go on sale in November, somewhere

What you’re looking at is the latest status update to the Xbox MySpace page showing a November release for Microsoft Natal Kinect. You know, just in case you were looking for something to puchase in the run up to the holidays. How much is the big question now.

Update: John was kind enough to ping us and let us know about this mention of a November release date on a UK Microsoft press page, which we also have a picture of below. This would seem to imply it’ll also be hitting Europe before the end of the year, but we’ll find out when the timer on that page hits zero and Microsoft’s second big event of the show kicks off. We’ll be there.

[Thanks, Bharat R.]

Kindle going nationwide in Target stores on June 6

Still waiting to see a Kindle in the wild before you pull the trigger? Hate shopping online? Need to pick up some toilet paper and a huge barrel of pretzels? You’re in luck, because Amazon’s finally going to be spreading Kindles out in retail nationwide through Target stores. After a trial run in April that got the e-reader into Target’s flagship store and 102 brightly lit retail paradises in south Florida, the $259 e-ink device will be available all over as of June 6th. The press release points out that the Kindle is still Amazon’s bestselling product, and we can’t see a retail push like this hurting its prospects — though with rumors flying about an imminent Kindle update, it might not be the absolute best time to buy. PR is after the break.

Google Nexus One Starts Popping Up in Retail Stores

The Google Nexus One Phone

After Google shut down web sales of the Nexus One earlier this month, the company is moving swiftly to seed retail stores with the HTC-designed smartphone.

I wireless, a T-mobile affiliate will sell the Nexus One at its 250 stores mostly in the Midwest. But in stores, the Nexus One will be pretty pricey. The device is expected to be available for $300, after a $50 mail-in rebate, and with a T-Mobile contract. That is higher than the $180 Google had priced the Nexus One at in its web store.

It’s the price that Google and customers must pay for the privilege of getting their hands on Nexus One before committing to buy the device.

Google introduced the HTC-designed Nexus One in January as a phone that would initially be available on T-Mobile’s network. But instead of being sold through T-Mobile stores, the search giant said it would sell Nexus Ones through its web site and handle customer support itself.

Though innovative and clever, the strategy didn’t resonate with consumers. Nexus One’s online store failed to catch on. Potential customers found they just couldn’t find a Nexus One in the real-world to play with, unless they knew a friend who already had the device.

“While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not,” wrote Andy Rubin, vice-president of engineering and Android czar at Google in a blog post. “It’s remained a niche channel for early adopters.”

The idea also gave rise to customer service complaints early on in the device’s life. Customers complained about the poor tech support from Google–the company didn’t offer a telephone help line for weeks, instead asking people to send in e-mails.

Now Google seems to be taking the first steps towards getting Nexus Ones to stores. The high price tag on the device at retail, though, dampens our enthusiasm. But if Google can strike deals with Best Buy or other big electronics retail chains, it could offer the Nexus One in store for the same price as it was on the web.

Apple will open international Stores early for iPad launch this Friday, iBooks app available now

Apple may be a despot of its own walled garden, but that doesn’t mean it’s not benevolent. The iPad’s international launch on May 28 has prompted the company to open Stores an hour early, at 8AM local time, in order to give its devotees a reprieve from hours of queuing outside. Then again, that little asterix up there points us to an ominous “while supplies last” note at the bottom, which together with current pre-orders being fulfilled at some unidentified point in June, might force the most impatient to just get to the Store even earlier. UK buyers will get an alternative option thanks to Dixons Group stocking Apple’s slate in Currys and PC World outlets, an arrangement that we keep hearing might be exclusive for the first sixty days after launch. Either way, you’ve been warned, don’t be tardy if you wanna be trendy.

P.S. The iBooks app has also made its debut outside of the US today, though at present it’s limited to just freebie titles, and the iBookstore is still described as “US only.”

Update: The latest we’re hearing is that at least some Apple Premium Resellers will also be getting stock of the iPad in the UK — worth checking out if other options sell out.

Apple now accepting cash for its cold hard iPads (video)

Nothing like a little bad press to change corporate policy. Diane Campbell made US national news this week (seriously) when her attempts to purchase an iPad with cash were rejected. Apple’s no-cash policy (credit cards and debit cards only please) was put in place by Apple as a means of ensuring that customers were sticking to the two-device limit — a policy that was originally put in place in October 2007 in order to deal with high demand for the iPhone and, some would say, to keep the devices off the grey market. Well, some members of the US media got so feverish with affect rage that they lashed out at Apple with chants of “anti-American” and “anti-disadvantaged” (Diane is described as disabled and on a fixed income). Apple has reversed the policy: it now accepts cash just as long as customers sign up for an Apple account while in the store at the time of purchase. As for Diane, she got a free iPad and “changed a little piece of the world.” We feel safer already. Check the local news report video after the break if you must.

Walmart Expects to Sell iPads This Year

ipadrelease374

While you’re stocking up on socks, body wash and gigantic boxes of cereal at Walmart, you might soon be able to grab an iPad from the electronics aisle.

The Arkansas-based company expects to carry the iPad sometime this year, according to Gary Severson, senior vice president of entertainment for Walmart.

“We anticipate being able to have the iPad later this year,” Severson told Bloomberg. He said the company was not prepared to provide specifics on timing and pricing.

Both Walmart and Best Buy have carried Apple’s iPhone since late 2008. Best Buy already began selling iPads when the device launched April 3, and it’s reasonable to expect that Walmart will soon receive the tablet as well.

We shouldn’t expect Walmart to give any heavy discounts on iPads, however. The iPhone 3GS being sold through Walmart starts at $197, which is $2 less than Apple’s retail pricing.

Fast food chains go luxury, for cheap

McDonald’s recently opened its first chic concept stores, offering a new fast food experience for consumers seeking “luxury” fast food meals.

Well, if you spot your competitor marketing themselves in an interesting way then it’s logical that you will want to get in on the act too. And this is exactly what KFC is doing from July, reports J-Cast.

Keeping with the chain’s trademark red theme, customers will be able to enjoy their KFC cuisine in new designer branches. The inside of the store features digital monitors and the exterior will have LCD screens. KFC is aiming especially for young female consumers and, starting with three stores in this quarter, will expand to one hundred outlets in three years.

Basically this is offering the typical (and very familiar) fast food experience but with luxury surroundings. Even the usual menu will be there at the usual price, plus some original (and no doubt more expensive) items.

The first designer 80-seat KFC will open in Shibuya on July 4, open eight till eight.

Apple names April 30th, 5PM as date and time for 3G iPad retail launch

There was a bit of confusion with Apple’s online store update yesterday as to when the 3G version of its iPad will actually make its retail debut. Let that fog of ignorance be no more, as Cupertino has today named April 30th, a Friday, as the day the WiFi + 3G slate will arrive in stores. In American stores, that is, don’t get all excited if you live outside the 50 states. That’s also the date when early (read: before yesterday) pre-orders will be fulfilled. Deliveries for those were promised for “late April,” though clearly this date has more of the late and less of the April to it.

UNIQLO 88 COLORS: Chinese dancing girls

As if launching another web feature, Utweet, specifically for its UT t-shirt range wasn’t enough, Uniqlo recently announced a new giant Shanghai store amidst fanfare and media attention. This being Uniqlo, though, it was only to be expected that they put their heads together for an online campaign too.

The store doesn’t open till May 15 but you can enjoy Chinese ladies in bright Uniqlo clothes online right now! Much like the eternally popular Uniqlock, the 88 Colors site features, well, eighty-eight girls prancing around. Of course, this isn’t just web self-indulgence on Uniqlo’s part, but advertising for its polo shirts range, available in, you’ve guessed it, 88 different colors.

The new Shanghai branch will be the largest ever for the chain, spanning 3,600 sq. meters and using 320 mannequins!
