Sony Alpha 230, 330, and 380 DSLRs out on May 19?

This next item is for all of you DSLR fiends who are champing at the bit in nervous anticipation of the revamped Sony Alpha 230, 330, and 380 DSLRs that were subject to some leakage a week or so ago. It looks like the cameras in question will be the raison d’être of a press event that the company has scheduled for the 19th of May, so you may just be getting your hands on the video-less wonders in short order — y’know, if that’s what you’re into. With prices starting at €549.99 (around $738) and going up from there, these bad boys feature a revised UI, HDMI out, and Memory Stick Duo support. And if you think that’s exciting, wait’ll you get a load of the spec breakdown! Peep it after the break.

Wild and slim PS3 redesign caught on camera?

Not that the original was any sort of tame, but some new, incredibly grainy leaked shots of a PS3 “slim,” if they prove legitimate, point to a pretty wild redesign in store for the console in the near future — not to mention what would be one of the smallest Blu-ray devices we’ve seen yet. There seem to be a lot of similarities to the Slimline PS2, while still holding onto that curvature the PS3 is so well known for, and even squeezing in a slot-loading disc drive and 120GB hard drive. Of course, Sony has issued a pretty strong denial of existing PS3 slim rumors, stating that “We currently don’t have any plans for a redesigned PS3 at this time,” but that’s a pretty common way for Sony to deal with rumors, no matter which way they fall. We’ll probably have to wait until E3 to learn the real truth, but it’s a good bet this won’t be the last true or false rumor to hit about a real or fake console in the run-up to the show. At least this one’s packing pictures.

Slimmer PS3 in store at E3?

Rumors of some sort of Sony announcement at E3 have been floating around for a couple weeks now, and it certainly seems like something’s afoot — hot on the heels of that officially non-existent white US DualShock 3 appearing this morning, we’re hearing that a revised PS3 is in the works. It’s not clear exactly what’s going down, but the hot whispers right now say that it’s the long-rumored slimmed-down redesign of the current console, not just a color change or storage bump. That makes a certain amount of sense, given the endless chatter of a price cut and Sir Howard Stringer’s recent comments about the system being too expensive — a trimmed-up redesign is right on schedule with those smaller Cell and RSX chips, and it could still possibly include some of that rumored motion-sensing hardware while driving down costs. On the other hand, after all this speculation and hype it would be a total Sony move to just pump out the same machine in a different color with maybe a new pack-in game, so we’re not holding our breath. Let’s say we’re, oh, “cautiously optimistic.” That work for you?

Update: Sony UK is currently denying the rumor with a curt “We currently don’t have any plans for a redesigned PS3 at this time.” Okay — but what else would you expect them to say?

12-inch MSI U200 thin-and-light appears a day early?

Well, well, look what we’ve got; a new CULV-based thin-and-light laptop from MSI. The image comes by way of Engadget Chinese whose trusted source lays out the following specs: a 12-inch, 1366 x 768 pixel LED-backlit display, with GMA 4500M integrated graphics, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, 2GB of DDR2 memory, and 250GB disk all wrapped up in a bigger-than-a-netbook but not-quite-a-laptop chassis weighing just 1.4-kgs (3-pounds) with paltry 3-cell battery. We expect pricing to be announced tomorrow but we’ll bet dollars to doughnuts that it’ll be about $700.

Did Microsoft Just Announce a Zune Phone on Twitter?

The blogs are buzzing over some tweets from a Twitter account run by the Office 2010 team, noting what looks like the outright announcement of a Zune phone. Something doesn’t feel right.

First, the tweets:

June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers.

Naturally, this got some other Twitterers a little excited. The followup:

New product launch, that’s all I’m allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre. 🙂

Well, that’s a pretty clear statement: Don’t buy any of these popular phones, because we’re releasing a product soon. Wow?

Granting that this is a Microsoft-run Twitter and that the announcement is well-informed, here’s what it probably means: Microsoft could be offering up a combination of a Zune phone reference design and combination Windows Mobile/Zune software to device manufacturers, come June. But until these errant Tweets are addressed by someone who we know can speak authoritatively for MS (not some low-level marketing minion), this is about as convincing as any of the other countless Zunephone/Pink “reports” we’ve heard to date—that is to say, mildly.

Mainly, it’s the source of these rumors that bothers me. The info comes from a Twitter account that claims to be connected to Office 2010 The Movie, a Microsoft advertising page promoting the next version of MS Office. Thing is, I can’t find a link to this Twitter page anywhere on office2010themovie.com, nor can I find mentions of @officethemovie by any other notable Microsoft Twitter accounts. It is linked! Hmm.

There’s plenty more to be suspicious of. The Twitter account is brand-new, and their limited tweets regarding Office have been strange:

Office 2010 will include Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks integrated right into Word. That’s just a hint of what’s to come!

Social networking in Word? Not to mention that half of these Tweets were posted through Tweetie, a Mac client.

Beyond these superficial oddities, there’s a conceptual problem. Why would MS allow a Zune phone announcement to leak through a low-profile, unconnected Twitter account, especially when such an announcement runs directly counter to the company line?

UPDATE: This Twitter account is link to from the OfficetheMovie website, but at best that makes the Twitter account the official mouthpiece of a part of the marketing team for a Microsoft product with little-to-no relation to the Zune project, not an infallible voice of the Zune division, much less the company as a whole. It’ll be interesting to see how this is dealt with when Redmond wakes up. [Neowin]

New iPhone specs leaked — 600MHz CPU, 32GB, 3.2MP cam?

Take this for what it is — a totally unverified rumor from a Chinese forum — but a set of specs for a next-gen iPhone have leaked out along with this screenshot, and they’re not entirely far-fetched. According to the alleged leak, iPhone model MB717LL 9 (“iPhone2,1” perhaps?) will have a 600MHz processor (up from the current 400MHz unit), 256MB of RAM (from the current 128MB), 32GB of storage, a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, as well as a digital compass and FM radio, all while retaining the same battery, basic shape, and screen size. Do we believe it? Well, if we were to conservatively guess at specs for a next-gen Apple phone that’s pretty much what we’d come up with — with the exception of FM — so we’re not shaking our heads too hard. Plus we’ve definitely seen evidence that a compass will figure into the equation, and there’s endless whispers that the camera will see an upgrade. Still, only Steve and the gang know for sure, and we’re (probably) not finding out till they’re ready — WWDC, are you here yet?

Palm Pre retail box and materials leak out

For staying as silent as they are about the product’s details, Palm’s doing an awfully good job of letting Pre rumors and speculation fly with wild, rampant abandon — and we’ve got a new one here that should at least take you through the night. Actually, this one’s less of a rumor and more a visual feast of reality: a retail (or near-retail) box complete with pack-ins has been spotted in the wild, where we learn once again that the device will definitely include a pouch among the usual assortment of odds and ends you normally expect to find with a phone (sadly, the Touchstone’s still strictly a pricey add-on) — and yes, the box looks pretty much like the one shown off at CES. Not as interesting as an actual Pre, we admit… but close. Check out a couple more shots after the break.

Verizon HP Mini 1000 to run $199 on a two-year contract at launch

Yep, it looks like Verizon’s subsidized HP Mini 1000 will indeed launch on May 17th — and if these leaked screenshots are any indication, launch pricing will be set at $199 after a $50 rebate two-year contract and $299 after rebate for a one-year commitment. (The prices are marked “at launch ONLY” so we’re guessing they’ll go up sometime after.) As for specs, it’s nothing special, just a 80GB Atom machine with 1GB of RAM and a WWAN card, so really, we’d much rather take the subsidy on a USB 3G stick and spread the mobile broadband love to all our machines than be stuck with an underpowered netbook, but hey — it’s your call. One more pic after the break.

Hold the phone: T-Mobile G1 v2 to really be the Samsung Bigfoot?

Well well — it looks like whatever Android handset Motorola’s cooking up might not be the T-Mobile G1 v2 after all. Mobile-review just published this shot of a Samsung Bigfoot with a slider QWERTY keyboard, and we’ve got to say, it looks a hell of a lot more like the device in that leaked T-Mobile roadmap than that rendered Moto unit. (It also looks a lot like the Samsung Beat DJ, but that’s neither here nor there.) Not only that, but there’s also an early spec sheet and another image of a candybar set called the Spica — apart from the slider, Bigfoot and Spica are nearly identical lower-end versions of the I7500, with three-inch screens, three megapixel cameras, and Android 2.0 “Donut” preloaded. That certainly throws a monkey wrench into what we had thought was a neatly-tied little bow, but we’ve got to say we’re stoked to see so many Android sets appearing all at once. Now if someone could just tell us when and where these would ship, we’d be all set. Spec sheet after the break.

Motorola’s first Android phone to be the T-Mobile G1 v2?

Okay, so T-Mobile confirmed on Saturday that it’s launching “multiple” Android devices from “three partners” later this year, and since most people assume the HTC Magic / Sapphire / myTouch / whatever and the Samsung I7500 are pretty much locked in, speculation has generally centered around that mysterious G1 v2 and the identity of the third partner — and it looks like it’s going to be Motorola. Not only did commenter Someperson notice that the button labels on the alleged G1 v2 are basically identical to those on other recently-launched Moto phones, Boy Genius Report says today that they can “more or less confirm” the v2 will be Schaumburg’s first Android set — a development that lines up perfectly with last month’s rumors of a slider QWERTY piece. Yep, it all fits together nicely, except for the fact that HTC is oddly out of the loop on the sequel to the G1 — but since T-Mobile owns that particular trademark, it can do whatever it wants, you know? Hopefully we’ll find out more soon — if that sketchy leaked roadmap is correct, we’ll be seeing this guy in the fall.

Update: Or… the G1 v2 could really be the Samsung Bigfoot. It’s a mystery for now, we’ll let you know.
