Rumored HTC tablet project both confirmed and suspended in one fell swoop

Remember those rumored HTC Android / Chrome OS touch tablets that were supposedly being shown behind the scenes at CES? In a brief statement given to Australia’s Channel News, Sales and Marketing Director Anthony Petts not only confirms the existence of the aforementioned project, he also announces in the same breath —
way to be efficient, guys — that the slates are on hold as the company is now “focusing their efforts on a new generation of mobile phones.” He’s not saying never, but don’t get your hopes up for the near future. At any rate, if a 4.3-inch device like the HTC HD2 is still considered a phone by its standards, we can be happy with that — maybe they can try five on for size while they’re at it.

Motorola Shadow is Nexus Two with sliding QWERTY keyboard?

Fan-made render? Very possible, but we’re intrigued by the notion. The gang at Mobile01 have laid out two more photos of what is being called the Motorola Shadow (not to be confused with the T-Mobile Shadow), which in a nutshell looks like Droid / Milestone with a white keyboard and wrist strap. Even more interesting is the assertion that this could be Google’s next flagship device, here lovingly dubbed the Nexus Two. Now while there is no way to corroborate at this point, we could totally buy this as feasible. After all, what better way to complement the Nexus One slate than with one with physical QWERTY? And who better than the company whose Android 2.0 device increased the platform’s mindshare at supersonic speeds, with a CEO willing to signify support even at the launch event for a competitor’s product? Apple rumor roundup: iPhone patent 4.0 edition

On today’s edition of the never-ending Apple rumor roundup, we take a quick detour into the murky realm of the United States patent database, topped off with a charming unsourced tip and some delightful analyst conjecture. Let’s blaze.

The rumor: A recent Apple patent application for a capacitive touchscreen-specific stylus may or may not mean The Tablet uses a stylus for input.
Our take: We’ve already promised to eat our hat if Apple puts a removable battery in the iPhone, so what’s next? A shoe? We will eat a shoe if Steve Jobs introduces a product that requires the use of a stylus. Besides, this product already exists: it’s called the Pogo Stylus, and it’s not exactly rocking minds (although we are intrigued by Inklet). Apple likes to file silly broad patent applications and see what it can get away with — it’s never been wise to read too much into them.

The rumor: Another Apple patent application hints that portable DVR functionality is coming to the iPod / iPhone — you’ll be able to grab TV and radio content from cable, satellite, OTA, or using “services” with your portable device and then load that into iTunes. Not only will you be able to connect new iPods to a cable box to record shows — channel changing and everything — but Apple’s going to release an accessory for older iPods to enable this functionality as well.

Our take: This would be like a dream come true for the consumer, and a crazy heroin nightmare for Apple to actually implement — can you imagine an iPod with a freaking CableCARD slot? Neither can we. Besides, it’s not like Apple to push content sales from anything other than the iTunes Store, and it’s especially not like Apple to extend functionality to older iPods when it can just release a newer one in a slightly different metallic finish. ASUS EeeTop ET2010PNT hints that NVIDIA Ion 2 is GeForce G310

We were a little disheartened last week when we didn’t hear a peep out of NVIDIA about Ion 2, but Pierre of Blogee has dug up some dirt on the next-generation graphics. The ASUS Eee PC ET2010PNT’s got a pretty nice looking 20-inch HD multitouch display, but it’s also powered by the new Intel Pine Trail D510 processor and NVIDIA GeForce G310 graphics — which according to the document is being dubbed as Ion 2. Sure, we already knew that the next version of Ion would be compatible with Intel new Atom platform, but we didn’t know that they’d be tossing aside the GeForce 9400M for its G310 graphics card (which is apparently just a rebranded G210). As we thought, it looks like this will be a discrete solution, and it appears (if the benchmarks are accurate) that the G310 will be considerably faster than the current Ion platform. We’re just hoping the 589MHz 16-core CUDA chip has been tweaked for better power efficiency when it comes to cramming it into netbooks. No word on when the ET2010PNT will be available, but given the initial hold up we saw with Ion 1 we aren’t overly optimistic that it will be any time soon.

Rumor: Fourth-Gen iPhone to Sport Touch-Sensitive Housing

Apple’s fourth-generation iPhone is due for a June or July launch with a better camera and possibly a touch-sensitive housing, according to an analyst.

Robert Chen of Goldman Sachs told Bloomberg that Apple’s next iPhone will be a major hardware and software upgrade. He did not disclose his source.

“Apple’s going to put a lot of innovation, not just on the hardware, but also on the software of the new iPhone,” said Chen, adding that the handset will feature a 5-megapixel camera and a new touch-sensitive plastic casing similar to that used for Apple’s Magic Mouse.

A June or July release for a fourth-generation iPhone would be a reasonable prediction, as Apple’s current and previous handsets have each launched during the summer of their respective years.

It’s unclear how a touch-sensitive housing would enhance the iPhone experience. The Magic Mouse’s touch-sensitive plastic detects gestures that control Safari and a few other Apple applications. On an iPhone, the housing would be on the back, so one can imagine that touch gestures could control core functions such as pausing or playing an iPod song, adjusting volume or answering a call.

Very few rumors have surfaced regarding Apple’s next iPhone, but it’s widely speculated that Apple must upgrade the iPhone’s camera and display to compete with new rivals, such as the Google Nexus One, which includes a 5-megapixel camera and OLED screen. Apple’s current iPhone 3GS has a 3-megapixel camera and an LCD display.

In November, business news publication Near Field Communications published a rumor that the fourth-generation iPhone would include a radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader. An RFID reader would scan RFID tags, which consist of a computer chip coupled with an antenna. Data stored on the chip transmits wirelessly through the antenna to an RFID reader operating on the same frequency as the antenna. Many retailers use RFID tags to track products in transit; libraries use RFID tags to track books. RFID tags are also used to track humans or animals for scientific and medical applications.

Thus far the rumor of an RFID reader in an iPhone has the most credence. Apple in July 2009 filed a patent describing an RFID antenna being placed in the iPhone’s touch-sensor panel.

Asus Eee Box 1501 with Blu-ray on its way to Switzerland

Good news, everybody! If you’re looking into one of Asus’s Eee Box 1501 nettops but weren’t exactly into the built-in DVD burner, well, better days may be ahead. It looks like a new version of the 1501 is on its way, this time packing Blu-ray. In case you’ve forgotten the specs, the Eee Box 1501 packs NVIDIA’s Ion chipset, an Intel Atom 330 dual-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and an HDMI port for good measure. There’s no official word on this yet, but the release of the Blu-ray boasting updated nettop looks likely for Switzerland in the near future, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information.

MacBook Pros With New Intel Chips Could Arrive Soon

Along with its much anticipated tablet (still in the rumor stage), Apple could announce an upgrade for its MacBook Pro notebooks featuring new Intel chips in a late January event.

Intel has sent e-mails members of its Intel Retail Edge program, promoting a chance to win two MacBook Pros equipped with Intel’s new Core i5 processors during January, according to a report by MacRumors.

Multiple independent reports say these promotional e-mails have been sent to members in the United States, United Kingdom and Spain.

Intel offers its Retail Edge program to employees at retail stores where Intel-based products are for sale. It’s a training program to educate employees on Intel products. The program also offers promotions and discounts.

The MacBook Pros still feature Intel’s older Core 2 Duo processors. It’s reasonable to expect Apple to upgrade its MacBook Pro family with Core i5 chips soon. Intel’s newer chips have significantly outperformed its older Core 2 Duo processors in early benchmark testing. Also, several manufacturers at CES showcased notebooks with Intel’s latest chips, including the Core i7 processor found in the 27-inch iMac. That means Apple needs to catch up soon.

Apple will host a special event on Jan. 27, according to The Wall Street Journal, where the company is expected to launch a touchscreen tablet. Apple could use the event to promote new MacBook Pros, as well. The company has done similarly in the past: At 2009’s Worldwide Developers Conference, for example, Apple announced new MacBooks prior to the major announcement of the iPhone 3GS.

Updated: Intel has dismissed the promotion as a mistake and said it meant to promote new HP notebooks instead. (Though it’s possible the mention of MacBook Pros was an accidental slip, and Intel is playing cover-up for its partner, Apple.)

How Will We Type on the Apple Tablet?

Speculation about the Apple Tablet mostly focuses on what the device is, not how it functions. Text input, more than anything else, is the problem Apple needs to solve to make the concept work. So how will they do it?

CES was rotten with new tablets, some Android, some not, some with fascinating screens, and again, some not. But one thing they all had in common was that they hadn’t quite figured out the text input problem: How do you create text without a keyboard?

The Problem

We’ve been comfortably typing without physical keyboards for years now, and this is largely Apple’s doing. One of the great triumphs of the iPhone was to make onscreen keyboards bearable—something that, even if you hate the concept of virtual keys on principle, you have to admit they accomplished. This works:

Extending this to the tablet, though, would be a mistake. I had a chance to play with a few different sizes of tablets at CES, nearly all of which had traditional onscreen keyboards—in particular, the Android 2.0 keyboard, which is aesthetically different but functionally almost identical to iPhone OSes. None of them worked, at least in the way that I wanted them to, for one reason: they were too big. Seven-inch tablets were too large to comfortably thumb-type on, while 10-inch tablets made text input all but impossible. The onscreen keyboard as we know it doesn’t scale gracefully, and unless Apple wants their tablet to be completely useless (our sources say they don’t) they’re going to have to figure this out. So what are Apple’s options?

Solution 1: A Giant iPhone

Apple has made mistakes before, but to only have a simple onscreen keyboard would qualify as an outright screw-up. QWERTY-style, thumb-actuated onscreen keyboards work on screens up to about five inches, with the 4.3-inch-screened HTC Touch HD2‘s keyboard straining even the most unsettlingly long thumbs. But to assume that this won’t work is to assume that the tablet is to be held a certain way, with hands at four and eight o-clock, more or less like a touchscreen phone in landscape mode. This may not be the case.

What if the tablet is meant to be held with one hand, and controlled with the other? What if it has some kind of kickstand or mount, so you can actually type with both hands, a la a regular keyboard? What if it’s intended to only work in portrait mode, where it would be just about narrow enough to be usable?


Apple’s filed extensive patents about how a large, multitouch onscreen keyboard might work, pictured above, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything: Apple’s got more patents than the tablet’s got rumors, and most of them never materialized into anything meaningful. The keyboard patent, for example, also includes drawings of an onscreen clickwheel, and a description of how small interface elements, like the minimize/close/zoom buttons in OS X proper, could be handled on a touchscreen—all of which are terrible awkward, and dissonant with Apple’s touchscreen philosophy so far.

Either way, a single, iPhone-esque keyboard really shouldn’t be the primary input method. It could be a supplementary input method, but to have two separate text input mechanisms seems messy, and distinctly un-Apple-y. Lame, half-baked input seems like the kind of thing Steve Jobs might fitfully shitcan a tablet for, actually, but that’s getting awfully speculative, even for a piece about a product that doesn’t officially exist at all.

Solution 2: Voice Control

Apple’s been on covert voice input crusade since it introduced Spoken Interface for OS X which, if you care to look (System Preferences>Speech>Speakable Items “On”) is still there. As it stands, it’s rudimentary—the iPhone’s Voice Control speech recognition is much more accurate—and though there are quite a few customization options, it’s really just a command system, not a full text input system.

Even more developed technologies like Dragon Dictation are still niche products, and honestly, the concept of controlling a computer entirely by voice is kind of absurd. “Open Browser! Open Gizmodo! Post withering comment about Apple tablet story, with these words!” No. Not now, and really, not ever—the computer as a stenographer is an obnoxious concept, held back by practical concerns, not technological ones.

That said, Apple is very proud of Voice Control on the iPhone, and they haven’t removed voice commands from OS X in over five years. It’s likely that there will be some kind of voice input for the tablet, but that it’ll be relegated to the same job it’s held in the past, taking care of the odd command and initiating the occasional script, and not much else.

Solution 3: The Dreaded Stylus

Styli! The very thing the iPhone was so dedicated to murdering could be the savior of the Apple tablet! Just ask Microsoft.

See, the only other tablet booklet device that’s garnering remotely comparable hype is the Courier, Microsoft’s dual-screen concept device leaked to us back in September. The Courier concept is very different from the blurry image we’ve assembled of the Apple tablet—it doesn’t have a keyboard. Unlike the Apple tablet, though, we know how the Courier is supposed to work:
Handwriting. Apple staked an entire device line on handwriting recognition—the Newton—over 15 years ago, so isn’t it conceivable that they’ve, you know, figured it out by now? Before taking another detour back to the patent office, let’s take a moment to recall Steve Jobs’ original iPhone keynote:

Oh, a stylus, right? We’re going to use a stylus. No. Who wants a stylus? You have to get ‘em and put ‘em away, and you lose ‘em. Yuck. Nobody wants a stylus. So let’s not use a stylus. We’re going to use the best pointing device in the world. We’re going to use a pointing device that we’re all born with – born with ten of them. We’re going to use our fingers. We’re going to touch this with our fingers.

This wasn’t a dismissal of styli. This was a dickish, public obsoleting of styli. If I were a stylus, I would refuse to work with Steve Jobs, on the basis of him being a jerk.

And yet, in November of 2009, an Apple patent, this time describing stylus input and clearly showing a tablet-like device, went public. If you have the will and patience to parse a little techno-legalese, go for it:

Upon the occurrence of an ink phrase termination event, the ink manager notifies the handwriting recognition engine and organizes the preceding ink strokes into an ink phrase data structure…The present invention, in large part, relates to the observation that client applications and handwriting recognition software in pen-based computer systems can make far more accurate ink-related decisions based on entire ink phrases, rather than individual ink strokes.

If not, you’ll have to take my word for it: This is basically the Newton’s Rosetta, updated for 2009.

Stylus input would be a stunning break from Apple’s iPod/iPhone finger-only strategy, and to a lot of people it would seem regressive. Then again, if the tablet is a perfectly predictable extension of the iPhone concept, it won’t revolutionize anything at all. I’m still filing this under “unlikely,” but looking at the evidence, I honestly—and surprisingly—can’t rule it out.

Solution 4: A New Style of Keyboard

The safest bet for how Apple will handle the text input problem is not coincidentally the broadest. Any onscreen keyboard would have to be different than the iPhone’s somehow, but to say that Apple’s tablet will have a new style of keyboard is to say that it will have pretty much any kind of onscreen keyboard that is unlike the iPhone’s. This is not very useful! Luckily, we have guidance, from other companies, and even from Apple.

Split onscreen keyboards are neither new nor common, which makes them kind of perfect: the map has been charted, so Apple needs only to explore it.

The most public of the alternatives is an actual, available product called DialKeys. Coopted by Microsoft a few years ago, this tech, which splits the keyboard into two crescent-shaped virtual keyboards, shipped with a handful of touchscreen UMPCs, a category of devices that died off before it had the time to truly solve the onscreen keyboard problem. It wasn’t very good. But the concept had potential, maybe.

Apple is definitely aware of DialKeys, even if they can’t use it—not that we’d want them to, or that they need to, having acquired a company with a similar concept about five years ago.

FingerWorks, a company specializing in touch interfaces and gesture concepts, was forcefully drawn into the Apple family about five years ago. A lot of their touch gestures actually made their way to the iPhone, albeit adapted from touchpad to screen use, according to FingerWorks employees:

The one difference that’s actually quite significant is the iPhone is a display with the multi-touch, and the FingerWorks was just an opaque surface. That’s all I’m going to say there. There’s definite similarities, but Apple’s definitely taken it another step by having it on a display

Interestingly, FingerWorks had a physical product with a split keyboard, which sat over Apple laptops’ regular keyboards, and which promptly disappeared after their acquisition. From the press release, which, mind you, hit the wires in 2003:

The MacNTouch Gesture Keyboard is a complete user interface that serves as mouse, standard keyboard, and powerful multi-finger gesture interpreter. Mouse operations like point, click, drag, scroll, and zoom are combined seamlessly with touch-typing and multi-finger gesture everywhere on the MacNTouch’s surface. Proprietary hardware and software allows pointing right over the keys, thus eliminating the frequent movement of the hand between the keyboard and the touchpad. The MacNTouch has been designed to minimize stress and it gives users unprecedented control of their computer using hand gestures.

Obviously such a product relates to a lot of aspects of tablet input, so let’s zero in on text: it’s exactly what the tablet needs, basically, except it’s not software. The keyboard is split for possible thumb use, it’s capable of gestures, and most importantly, it’s already owned by Apple.

Best of all, the FingerWorks domain, which proudly displays all of these concepts, was pulled from the internet this week. If this feels like a strange coincidence, that’s because, well, it is.

Making Bets

For all the evidence about the tablet’s possible input methods, there’s no standout answer. Apple’s got a thing for voice input, a history with onscreen keyboards, a patent trail and strong lineage of stylus input, and a pattern of suspicious behavior with and towards new keyboard types. We’ve got a handful of cases here, all compelling, and all conflicting. And the takeaway, if you haven’t picked it up yet, is that nobody really knows.

For my money, though, an adapted, possibly split onscreen keyboard is the best bet, and assuming the learning curve isn’t too steep, the most appealing option. But of the options laid out here, it’s by far the most vague—its FingerWorks ancestor is nearly a decade old, conceived in a time before multitouch screens—so the only truly safe bet is that whatever Apple comes up with, it’s going to surprise us.

LG Arena GT950 leaks out with AT&T branding

Looks like AT&T is about to get a version of the LG Arena — these shots of a GT950 with the carrier’s branding just hit the tubes. The phone hasn’t been officially announced by either AT&T or LG, but the safe bet is that the 950 is just a bespoke variant of the familiar Arena KM900, so look for a three-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen with LG’s S-Class UI, a five megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, and 8GB of storage. We’ll have to see whether this hits at CES next week or MWC in February — but until then you can get a feel for this thing by checking out our KM900 hands-on video right here.

iGuide and iSlate — Two Potential Name Candidates for an Apple Tablet?

Apple’s apparent filing for the “iSlate” trademark and purchase of the iSlate.com domain has some convinced that iSlate will be the official name of Apple’s rumored touchscreen tablet. Some more digging around led to the discovery of a trademark application for “iGuide,” which bears striking similarities to the iSlate application. The theory, then, is iGuide could be another name candidate for an Apple tablet.

MacRumors, who originally reported evidence that Apple purchased iSlate.com, found that the iGuide trademark application was signed by Apple’s senior trademark specialist Regina Porter, who was also the signer of the the iSlate paperwork. The iGuide application describes features that could be part of a general-purpose gadget:

Computer hardware and computer software for accessing, browsing, searching, recording, organizing, storing, transmitting, receiving, manipulating, streaming, reproducing, playing, and reviewing audio, video, games, music, television, movies, photographs, and other multimedia content

Also, a detail perhaps overlooked by MacRumors — the address of the listed applicant, iGuide Media LLC, shares the same address as the applicant listed for iSlate, Slate Computing LLC: “1209 Orange Street, Wilmington DELAWARE.” That address is linked to Corporation Trust, an agency that assists corporations in expediting legal services and other requests. The implication, then, is Apple hired Corporation Trust to file for the iSlate and iGuide trademarks. Corporation Trust presumably set up accounts as “iGuide Media LLC” and “Slate Computing LLC” for filing their respective trademarks.

Wired.com consulted trademark experts to help assess the iSlate trademark application. They declined to speculate on Apple’s plans, but based on the legal expertise they provided, Wired.com finds it inconclusive that a future Apple product will carry either the name iSlate or iGuide.

Jane Wald, chair of the trademark practice group at Irell and Manella, noted to Wired.com that the iSlate trademark has not been registered in the United States; it’s only been filed. In U.S. trademark law, a company can only win registration of a mark once it provides sufficient evidence it is actually selling the product under that name. That means “iSlate” is not a name set in stone; it could be abandoned.

Furthermore, a company can file for multiple trademarks that are potential candidates for a product’s name. However, a company must file for trademarks in good faith, meaning it must at least be considering using the name in commerce.

“If you filed 100 different [marks] for the same product years in advance, you probably wouldn’t be having a good faith intent, but a few of them doesn’t ring alarm bells,” Wald explained in a phone interview.

In summary, based on the appearance of Apple’s trademark specialist on both applications, it’s safe to conclude iSlate and iGuide are trademarks filed by Apple via the agency CT. And if we are to believe iSlate and iGuide are candidates for an Apple tablet, then there could be a few others out there — but not very many.

iGuide, though? Bleh.
