ASUS E600 WP7 slab stops by the FCC on its way to AT&T stores

ASUS was definitely one of the early players to get all excited about Windows Phone 7, yet as the OS release came and went all we were left with was a couple of blurrycam shots and a little video of a four-inch slab from the company. Now we have some further less than flattering pictures, but these come from a very solid source: the FCC. Curiously this filing dates back to April, and the inclusion of a Garmin Asus branding on the AC adapter is another indicator that this phone comes from an earlier time. We’re hearing rumors at this point that this phone may actually never see a retail release, that it’s now just a test bed for future models, but if it does pop up at retail it’ll likely be nestled in at AT&T stores. If you all wish hard enough, maybe it’ll finally find its way.

Apple’s iPhone 4 (legitimately) on sale for the first time: $50 off at Radio Shack

Missed out on Black Friday? Good on you. Now, still in the market for an iPhone 4? If so, you should probably point your vehicle to the nearest Radio Shack, STAT. For the first time since going on sale in June, Apple’s iPhone 4 is legitimately on sale from a retailer that actually exists and won’t sell your personal information to some goon in an offshore paradise you’ve never heard of. (No, Walmart’s $2 savings doesn’t count.) We’re told that the $50-off sale is being done to ramp up awareness surrounding Radio Shack’s (admittedly low-key) wireless business, and if we had to guess, we’d say it’ll probably work to perfection. Ever since the handset began shipping this summer, the going rate was $199 (on contract) for the 16GB model or $299 (also on contract) for the 32GB flavor; this deal hacks $50 from each, and there’s even an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $49 if you’re looking to take things even lower. Better still, The Shack‘s offering a $75 trade-in credit on any functional / non-cracked iPhone 3G as well as $125 for a 3GS in like condition, meaning that you could walk in today, hand over your 3GS, and walk out with an iPhone 4 for $25 (plus activation fees). Naturally, the deal’s only available in brick-and-mortar locations (read: not online), and the fun comes to a close on December 11th. So, who’s in?

Nexus S shows off its camera, video recording abilities

At this point, there’s essentially nothing that we don’t already know about the Nexus S… except when it’ll be officially revealed, of course. But up until now, we haven’t had a good look at what exactly the impending smartphone’s camera sensor could do. Thanks to an unsuspecting Picasa stream, we’re now being treated to a handful of images captured by a Samsung GT-I9020 — or in other terms, a Nexus S. Better still, someone uploaded a brief video clip of its HD motion capturing abilities, and that’s embedded just past the break (horizontal and portrait versions, to boot). Have a peek yourself and see if you’re impressed.

PlayStation Phone ‘Zeus Z1’ caught on video again, this time you can actually see it (update)

Wow guys, we just spotted a new video of the PlayStation Phone, codenamed Zeus Z1, and this time we get a long, loving look at the entire device — a refreshing contrast to last time’s blurry tease. In addition to appreciating just how fat this phone is, and just how real it is, you can clearly see a “PlayStation” icon, which should hopefully put to rest any doubts that this phone will actually play PlayStation games. Check out a close-up of the icon after the break. Oh, and by the way, there’s no audio on the video, your computer is not broken.

Nielsen: Android makes huge gains in US smartphone marketshare, RIM takes a backseat, Apple leads in desirability

Nielsen‘s just released a report finding that 29.7 percent of mobile users in the United States now own a smartphone. Of that 29.7 percent (which you can see in the pie chart above), 27.9 percent of them have iPhones, 27.4 percent are BlackBerry users, and 22.7 percent have an Android device. Windows Mobile, Symbian, Linux and Palm are left to divide up the remaining chunk — about 22 percent — of the market. That’s a massive shift from the beginning of the year, when the iPhone boasted 28 percent of the market, BlackBerry had 35 percent, and Windows Mobile about 19 percent. The biggest winner in this story is Android, which has gone from 9 percent of the smartphone-owning market at the beginning of the year, to 22.7 percent of the market today. The story looks a bit different, however, when people are asked about what kind of smartphone they would like to own next. In that case, Apple and Google are the big winners, with 30 percent of ‘likely’ smartphone upgraders’ reporting they’d like an iPhone, while 28 percent said they want an Android device, and only 13 percent reporting that they’re interested in a BlackBerry device.

The picture looks very much the same with current smartphone owners, as well. As far as gender goes, the percentages are very similar when asked what smartphone is desired next, except that more men report wanting an Android device, while more women — about 12 percent more — say they simply don’t know what they want next. LG Star struts its stuff on film, toys with an iPhone 4 (video)

We can’t get enough of the world’s first Tegra 2 smartphone, the LG Star, so if the 4-inch diva wants a closeup while parading about Tel Aviv, who are we to argue? GSM Israel somehow managed to obtain the same dual-core Android 2.2 handset we glimpsed earlier this morning, complete with 8 megapixel camera and HDMI port. Though we don’t have the foggiest idea what they’re saying in the video after the break, the LG-P990 certainly seems to be a speedy little machine in side-by-side webpage load tests with the fan-favorite iPhone 4, though we seem to detect a hint of hesitation when the Star’s capacitive touchscreen gets brushed. Chalk it up to faux embarrassment, we suppose. Video after the break.

HTC job listing hints at an E Ink / 3D-filled future, new North Carolina facility

Months back, word on the street had it that HTC was looking to grab up emptied space in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park post-recession; huge outfits like Nortel bit the bullet in 2009, while Sony Ericsson shuttered its operations there and relocated to Atlanta. Naturally, the consolidation paved the way for other technology firms to slide in without overpaying for real estate. HTC has remained mum on the prospect of expansion, but it’s fairly obvious what’s in mind given the multiple job listings that have just emerged for a heretofore unannounced facility in RTP. Of particular importance is a plea for a Display and Camera Design Engineer — HTC is asking that whoever applies for the role have some level of “familiarity with 3D display and imaging technologies,” not to mention “familiarity with multiple display technologies (TFT-LCD, PMOLED, AMOLED, E-ink, etc.).” Of course, we’ve seen quite a few bullet points in our years that end up meaning nothing at all, but it definitely gets our gears turning. Could HTC be working on a reader / tablet that would at least partially rely on e-paper? Are we destined to see a 3D Android device from the outfit at Mobile World Congress 2011? Imaginations, here’s the part where you run wild.

LG Quantum, HTC Surround and Samsung Focus: BOGO from AT&T starting Friday

Here’s hoping you didn’t choose to adopt early. Not even three weeks after Windows Phone 7 went on sale in the US of A comes this: a buy one, get one free sale christened by Microsoft and AT&T. Starting November 26th (that’s Black Friday, we’ll have you know), sleepy-eyed consumers can drag themselves into their local AT&T store in order to pick up an LG Quantum, HTC Surround or Samsung Focus in BOGO fashion — best of all, you can mix and match, enabling users to snag a Quantum and a Surround (or a Focus) for just $199. Naturally, you’ll still be signing a pair of two-year agreements with Ma Bell, but it’s still the cheapest way to indulge in WP7 for the time being. There’s no telling when the deal will end, but common sense would say to jump in early if you’ve got a hankerin’.
