Xbox 360 Dashboard update is out!

It’s out, right on schedule and it’s a biggie. The new Fall 2010 Xbox Live Dashboad update is being rolled out right now in preparation for Kinect to hit shelves on November 4th (or November 10th in Europe). The update includes Netflix search, Zune music, an ESPN entertainment hub, and much much more. Since you probably overslept anyway and don’t have time to do the update before heading into the coal mines, why not check out our in depth preview of the update from a few weeks ago. Xbox Live mandatory update coming November 1st, all hands on board

Dashboard, that is. You’ve already seen the new Xbox 360 dashboard update right here and thousands of you have tried its flatter, faster interface for yourselves, but if you’ve missed out, it’s looking like your Halloween candy bag may include a full-scale rollout. Xbox Live subscribers are getting the above message in their inboxes right now, indicating that November 1st will bring a service update of some sort, after which point “You will notice a change to the layout of the Xbox LIVE Dashboard, a new color scheme, and new fonts being used.” That doesn’t necessarily sound like a cornucopia of Netflix Search, ESPN, Kinect and Zune Music to us, but it’s not like you have a choice — it’s mandatory, and you’ll lose all Xbox Live functionality unless you comply. We for one welcome our new gaming software overlords. Unlike some of the competition’s updates, these at least add functionality.

Droid 2 update begins with promise of better battery life and more

We’ve receive a number of reports that a 2.3.20 software update for Verizon’s Droid 2 is slowly making the rounds this morning. The OTA push promises a number of improvements and enhancements with the promise of better battery life, faster transitions between WiFi and 3G data connection, and quicker location tracking when using GPS being perhaps the most notable. Other enhancements include:

  • New ability to add pictures from your Gallery to a contact.
  • Export all your contacts to the SD card.
  • View details of Social Networking contacts.
  • VZ Navigator is now preloaded on device.

Galaxy S Android 2.2 Froyo update begins to trickle out (update: official)

Based on breathless reports we’re seeing on Twitter and in the XDA-Developers’ forums, it would appear that Samsung has just pushed out the official Android 2.2 Froyo update for its Galaxy S as promised. Our Nordic friends are the first to report seeing the build I9000 JPM update in the latest version of Samsung’s Kies PC software. It’s early days though, so do let your fellow i9000 owners know how it goes in the comments below. List of changes (including GPS fix) listed after the break.

Update: We’ve just been handed the official press release for the Andoid 2.2 Galaxy S update. Indeed, Nordic countries get it first (starting mid-October, aka, “now”) before it’s “gradually rolled out to other European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, North America, Africa and rest of the world.” Hey, it takes time to update 5 million handsets.

Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 firmware update adds autofocus support for company’s A-mount lenses

Sony has taken the time to upgrade the firmware on its minuscule NEX-5/3 system cameras to improve usability, make manual focusing easier, and allow single-shot autofocus when using A-mount glass via an adapter. The latter will be perhaps the most important thing for owners of Sony’s large-sensor compact, allowing them to use a total of 14 lenses from the company’s DSLR range without having to worry about focusing manually. Though, if you are into that kind of thing, the MF Assist mode has been improved with a new feature giving you a zoomed-in view of the area you’re trying to keep sharp — to make it easier to tell if you’re doing it right. The UI has also undergone a bit of a streamlining, which you can check out for yourself by downloading the new software from the source link below.

Copy and paste coming to Windows Phone 7 in ‘early 2011’ (update)

So, maybe Microsoft meant “people don’t do that in 2010.” At the mega-corp’s UK-based Windows Phone 7 launch event, we were just informed that its hot-off-the-presses mobile OS will be blessed with a software update that’ll add copy and paste functionality in “early 2011.” That’s according to one Andy Less, and while details beyond that are scant, it’s possible that said update will also bring other magical makeovers into the fold. We’re still a little baffled that the company would leave such a seemingly vital part of the software out at launch, but we guess certain corners always have to be cut in order to get something out before a sure-to-be-profitable holiday quarter. And hey, it’s not like we haven’t seen another major mobile OS player pull this same stunt before.

Update: CNET’s Ina Fried got a quick look at an early implementation of copy and paste in Windows Phone 7, and says it works fairly well: You start by clicking on a single word, then drag your finger across the rest of the passage you’d like to transmit to expand your highlighted selection. When you let go, a paste button appears. Sound about right to you?

Zune software version 4.7 is now ready to receive your Windows Phone 7

Microsoft has taken care of a little bit of T-crossing and I-dotting this morning by updating its Zune desktop software to v4.7. The code should now be fully equipped to welcome incoming Windows Phones, and our tipster’s screenshot above seems to indicate the app marketplace will be up and running on time as well. There’s an additional note to say that app purchases will be accessible from up to five separate phones sharing the same Windows Live ID — clever Microsoft, encouraging people to buy in bulk. As to the Zune HD, we’re hearing there’s no firmware update at this time, it’s still on v4.5.

Update: Thanks to our treasure trove tipster Sheeds, we now know there are currently 86 available apps in the WP7 marketplace. That’s a far cry from the “over 2,000 at launch” we heard on Saturday, but it’s still very early on. 22 of those apps are free, the rest cost between $0.99 and $6.99.

Samsung rolls out JI6 update to fix Vibrant GPS issues

It’s a tad later than initially promised, but it looks like Vibrant users frustrated by those serious GPS issues will soon have a fix — Samsung has just announced that it’s begun rolling out the JI6 over-the-air update to remedy the problem and finally bring it in line with the Captivate. No word on what else the update might include and, as with all OTA updates, there’s also no guarantee as to exactly when you’ll get it, with Samsung only saying that it will be distributed randomly over the next “several weeks.”

RIM pushes out software update for BlackBerry Torch, promises speed improvements aplenty

Well, it looks RIM hasn’t been ignoring all those complaints about its less than speedy BlackBerry Torch — the company has just pushed out an updated version of BlackBerry 6 for the device that promises a whole host of speed improvements. That includes faster page loading and improved panning in the browser, improved responsiveness after unlocking the device, faster application launching, exiting and switching, faster rendering and smoother transitions on the home screen, faster rendering of thumbnails in the picture application, and faster and smoother scrolling in the message list and when reading email — oh, and improved audio quality too. Look for the update (v6.0.0.695) to begin rolling out directly to devices over the next week and a half, or simply hit up either RIM or AT&T below to skip the wait and download the update right now.

Early third-generation Kindle software update improves web browser, provides new way to feel e-litist

What better way to read up on your Republic of Gilead lore (whether or not such country allows you to read in the first place) than on a digital screen via firmware that’s just a tinge futuristic. Amazon is offering an early preview of software update 3.0.2 for the latest generation of its Kindle reader. It’s as simple dragging-and-dropping a file onto your device, jumping through the right menus, and waiting patiently for several minutes. What does it offer? “Web browser and general performance improvements,” according to the site, and while the browser did seem a tad snappier, that could very well be a phantasmagoria of our optimism. Still, you do get to show all your friends you’ve got a newer version, and that’s what really matters, right?
