Dell Streak 7 official on T-Mobile’s 4G network, bringing dual-core Tegra 2 and Froyo

Dell’s Looking Glass tablet has just received its official papers, being dubbed the Streak 7 and packed off to T-Mobile HSPA+ network. Alas, unlike its fellow CES debutants from the likes of Motorola and LG, this slate only has Android 2.2 on board, no Honeycomb, but you do get a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera, a Gorilla Glass-protected screen, 16GB of internal memory, and of course the greatness and glory of that 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor. T-Mobile retail stores and Dell’s direct online outlet should have the Streak 7 “in the coming weeks.” Full PR and an introductory video follow after the break.

On yesterday’s new that LG would be bringing the G-Slate Honeycomb tablet to T-Mobile, interest in this particular presser obviously went through the roof — and now we’re here! Toshiba’s Tablet: Up Close

toshiba tablet vert.jpg

One more tablet to look at before the CES showroom floor opens up this morning (that’s right, we’ve still got another hour before the show technically opens). This one’s from Toshiba. And it’s so new that it technically doesn’t have a name. Toshiba was just calling it the Toshiba Tablet. We like that simplicity. Go with it, Toshiba.
The slate is going to run Google’s Android Honeycomb, which means that it most likely won’t be out until the spring, but the company says it’s gunning for a release in the “first half” of 2011 (the unit we saw was running Froyo, which, after checking out Motorola’s entry, looks downright ancient).
It features a 10-inch screen with a 1280-by-800 resolution and slots for USB, HDMI, and mini USB, as well as an SD card slot for expanding memory. Like pretty much every non-iPad tablet these days, it has front- and rear-facing cameras (at 2MP and 5MP, respectively).

Dell Streak 7 pops up on the T-Mobile website

We had a nagging suspicion that this was goin’ down eventually. and here you have it: the Dell Streak 7 has appeared on T-Mobile’s website! As of this posting, actually clicking on the option gives you nothing — but we assume that will change soon enough. In the meantime, they do have a Sidekick XL to sell you.

Netbook Navigator announces it’ll announce three new Windows-based tablets at CES

Netbook Navigator has made tablet pcs in the past — one of which we reviewed — so it should come as no surprise that they’ve got several more brewing. In fact, we are now hearing that the company’s got three (yes, three) Windows-based tablets to show off when the floor opens and the stampede begins. Among the offerings will be the NAV7 tablet, what the company is describing as the “first ever multitouch Windows 7-inch” tablet, plus the NAV10i and a slightly revamped NAV9. While we don’t have full specs for any of these tablets, we do know that all will be Atom CPU-based devices with SSDs, 2GB of RAM, ‘several’ USB ports, WiFi, Bluetooth, and webcams, plus optional 3G. Other details about the NAV10i — it’ll be a 10-incher (capacitive LCD), while the NAV9 will be a rugged 8.9-incher. We’ll let you know as soon as we get our hands on these bad boys, but until then: the full press release is after the break.

Motorola Xoom Tablet: Pics Galore

moto tablet side finger1.jpg
Okay, here’s my last tablet post of the night (though almost certainly not the show). Such a device designed by a company like Motorola certainly warrants mention, right? It’s called the Xoom (pronounced Xoom).
It’s an Android tablet–a Google sanctioned one, in fact. The thing will run Honeycomb, the first version of the company’s mobile OS actually designed to run on tablets. It features a 10 inch widescreen and is a little bit skinnier than its chief rival, the iPad.
The device sports a 1GHz NVidia Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of memory (expandable via SD card). It also has front and rear facing cameras (2- and 5MP, respectively), for all of your teleconferencing needs.
Also, interesting, the thing docks in landscape mode, unlike the iPad’s upright docking.
Pretty slick, Motorola. A bunch more pictures, after the jump.

NEC dual-screen Android Cloud Communicator LT-W hands-on

At CES, NEC’s showing off the hinged Android tablet it teased last month, pitching it as a great way for third parties to… well, do awesome stuff. They’re kind of leaving the doors wide open as to how (or to whom) it’ll be sold, suggesting it could make a great e-reader, a digital notebook for students, a scrapbook, or whatever devs dream up. The “Cloud” part of the “Cloud Communicator” name means that NEC thinks the LT-W would be great for generic cloud services, but really, it’s just an Android 2.1 tablet with WiFi, Bluetooth, and optional 3G — there’s nothing special in here that makes it particularly well-adapted for magically pulling data out of the cloud.

Unfortunately — cloud or otherwise — we didn’t come away with a very positive impression of this thing. Our very first red flag was the stylus, which matches up with a pair of 800 x 600 resistive touchscreens that don’t seem particularly bright or contrasty. Some of NEC’s sample apps (which you can see in the video after the break) make decent use of the dual display setup, but nothing blew us away — and more importantly, everything seemed just a little too jerky for a Cortex-A8 core. If NEC were to remix this with a Tegra 2, two capacitive touchscreens, and Honeycomb, we might be singing a different tune… but for now, this seems like little more than a Courier gone wrong.

Samsung PC7: One Slick Convertible Tablet

samsung pc7 guy.jpg

Yeah, I know, CES has yet to actually officially begin, and we’re already up to our ears in tablets. Samsung’s newly announced device definitely deserves mention, however–it’s easily one of the slickest gadgets I’ve seen this week.
The PC7 is really a reimagining of the whole netbook concept, with a screen that slides right over the keyboard, turning into a slate tablet. The device has a multi-touch 10.1 screen and runs Windows 7, making it arguably the coolest device built around that hardware.
Inside you’ll find an Intel Atom Z670 CPU, 2GB of RAM, and either 32- or 64GB of storage. The PC7 can do both WiMax and 3G, and it weighs in at just over two pounds. Check out some closeup shots, after the jump.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 first hands-on! (update: video)

Acer’s ten-inch Tegra 2 tablet with Verizon LTE? You’re looking at it right now, courtesy of the NVIDIA booth at CES 2011’s Digital Experience show. It’s just the same engineering prototype with an early build of Android 2.2 we’ve seen before — it’ll run Honeycomb at launch — but this time, we got to touch. The hardware seriously feels final, with a solid metal case and a supremely responsive touchscreen that tracks a full ten points of contact. There’s an interesting array of ports, too, with a full-sized USB port (as well as micro-USB) on one side and a dedicated charging socket too, as well as a dock connector on the bottom. What’s missing are the standard Android Home, Menu and Back buttons, as instead of those, you simply swipe the lower right corner of the screen to bring up a tiny pane of virtual alternatives. No LTE connectivity to be found at Digital Experience, we’re afraid, so we’ll have to bring you speed tests another day — but we’ll have video up soon. For now, peep the gallery below.

Update: Video after the break!
