T-Mobile Android Phones Get Wi-Fi Calling

T-Mobile today announced that it will be rolling out its Wi-Fi calling solution to a selection of Android handsets, including the newly announced myTouch and Motorola Defy.

First introduced in June of 2007, the feature gives users an enhanced signal and lets them avoid using domestic and long-distance minutes by making calls via Wi-Fi signals. The feature is currently available on a number of T-Mobile phones, including the Nokia E75 Mode, BlackBerry Bold 9700, and BlackBerry Curve 3G.

Once introduced, the feature will be useable straight out of the box, allowing customers to make calls and send texts via 802.11 b/g/n. According to T-Mobile, “Wi-Fi Calling for Android is anticipated to be available on a growing selection of T-Mobile’s Android-powered smartphones in the coming months.”

The T-Mobile myTouch and the Motorola Defy are both due out before the holidays.

T-Mobile’s Passes prepaid data plans leak out

We’ve been saying prepaid data plans are going to be the next big wave in mobile, and it looks like T-Mobile’s getting on board — we were just sent this employee training sheet detailing the upcoming Passes plans. All of T-Mobile’s mobile broadband products are eligible, which is nice, but the plans themselves are a bit lame — $10 gets you 100MB of data or a weeks’ access, whichever comes first, $30 gets you 300MB or a a month’s worth of access, while $50 nets you 1GB or 30 days. That’s an odd blend of tiered data pricing and prepaid limits, and it compares poorly to T-Mobile’s standard $39 / month data plan with a 5GB cap. But hey — flexibility isn’t cheap. Expect to see this one launched at CTIA for October release — the docs say the new plans will arrive with a new Jet USB modem and a prepaid SIM card retail package as well.

T-Mobile Halts G2 Pre-Sales, Cites Overwhelming Demand

tmobile_g2.jpg

If you were holding off on pre-ordering a brand new T-Mobile G2, you’ve missed the boat, friend. T-Mobile today announced that it has ended pre-orders on the Google-tastic device, “due to overwhelming demand.”

Of course, pre-orders on the handset were set to end tomorrow anyway, since that’s when the device is actually supposed to go on sale. You’ll still be able to buy the thing through T-Mobile’s site, starting on the 6th, but the carrier isn’t making promises about shipping the thing then.

You can always try walking into your local T-Mobile store, but given the apparent popularity of the G2, a few elbows may have to be thrown.

Confirmed: Windows Phone 7 launches October 11th in New York City, and T-Mobile’s on board

If there was any scrap of doubt in your mind, we’ll obliterate it for you right now — October 11th is the day Windows Phone 7 will be unveiled in the US, not just at a fancy London event… and wonder of wonders, T-Mobile’s the star of the show. Looks like AT&T won’t be launching Metro UI handsets all alone, eh? The event agenda clearly states there will be “an exclusive showing of T-Mobile powered Windows Phone 7 devices” at 3:30PM EST, and you can bet your britches we’ll be there live to cover the whole thing.

[Thanks, James T.]

T-Mobile G2 on sale right now

West of the Rockies? Want a T-Mobile G2 before (practically) anyone else? You may be able to grab your HSPA+ handset right now. We had it on good authority that T-Mobile corporate decided to match Radio Shack and release the G2 three days early, but we got a pleasant surprise when we called to verify that fact — several stores in California, Oregon and Washington state said we could buy one today if we wanted, and even those who didn’t said they’d have it tomorrow if we could bear the wait. Of course, it’s less than two hours to closing on the west coast and we can’t guarantee the handsets are there — so give them a call yourself — and be sure to buckle up if you plan to rush out. It also couldn’t hurt to read our full preview, of course, and if you grab one please do let us know how your hinges hold up.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

AT&T and T-Mobile will have cell coverage in NYC subway stations

New York City promised subway cell phone coverage five years ago, and Transit Wireless took up the $46 million banner in 2007 — now, three years and a friendly British jab later, at least two major carriers are convinced it’s actually going to happen. Bloomberg reports that T-Mobile and AT&T have both signed ten-year agreements to let their customers access Transit’s subterranean wireless network, which should cover 277 NYC stations in the years to come. Critically, we’re still talking about coverage at just the stations, not actually on board — there’s till no word on when we can expect the tubes themselves to boost our sorry reception bars.

T-Mobile exec downplays need for LTE, calls WiMAX ‘niche’

LTE? WiMAX? T-Mobile USA’s Neville Ray isn’t as interested in these technologies as the competition. In an interview with BusinessWeek, the Chief Network Officer said, “we’ll look towards LTE at the right point in time for us… that ecosystem is going to be much richer than the competing one from [WiMAX], which is really a niche play.” A niche play, you say? Network burn! What isn’t clear from the BW piece — and it’s something we’re painfully curious about — is if Ray himself used the term 4G as interchangeably as the article implies. After all, the company line is that it’s already got a 4G technology in (the theoretically slower) HSPA+, as it’s claimed as recently as the G2 announcement. We’re guessing not, but all the same, we wouldn’t hold our breath for any radical new cell towers in T-Mo’s immediate future — and we’d expect nothing less from AT&T than to continue to sneer at its use of the 4G term in its press materials.

Engadget Podcast 214 – 09.30.2010

We thought about calling this podcast “Unchained Melody” or “The Engadget Podcast: RAW” but our COO got a little concerned about violating some sort of intellectual property laws, so you just get the plain vanilla name. Regardless, it is quite a monster, complete with a radio play set in an AT&T store and 3-D versions of Jerry Seinfeld and Jar-Jar Binks. Dunno how else we can sell you on this one.

How to Pick an Android Smartphone – September 2010 [Android]

The last few months have been phenomenal for Android fans, with Samsung’s Galaxy line hitting all four carriers and Verizon getting a few, new, better Droids for their customers. But which should you pick? It’s actually an easy decision. More »

LG Optimus One headed to T-Mobile with 3G hotspot and WiFi calls?

If the allegedly leaked slide immediately above is the real deal, it looks like the LG Optimus One is destined for T-Mobile, and it’s going to get some serious use out of that 802.11 b/g WiFi radio. We knew the quad-band GSM handset was going to have a shot of Froyo on top of some fairly middling specs, but here’s an unexpected treat: the Android handset just might be the first Android device with UMA support. If you’ve already forgotten what that particular acronym means, we don’t blame you, as Unlicensed Mobile Access hasn’t held the spotlight since the days of HotSpot@Home, but suffice it to say the tech uses a WiFi access point to make free VoIP calls, no cell signal (or minutes) required. It’d be easy to point to this move as a nefarious T-Mobile plot to free up cellular bandwidth a la the femtocell, except it apparently also works the other way, too — the Optimus One will allegedly let you share that HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connection over WiFi with your thirsty laptop.
