Virtual Masters Reel AR Fishing Game

Japanese game manufacturer Takara Tomy showcased a particularly realistic virtual handheld fishing game called Virtual Masters Reel AR Fishing at this years Toy Show in Tokyo. Set to be released in July of this year, the fishing rod shaped gadget allows players to engage in a full fishing experience regardless of their location, thanks to a built in 2.4 inch liquid crystal monitor and a rod console that mimics the actual sensation of real fishing gear. Using Augmented Reality (AR), it contains a 0.3 megapixel camera that allows players to take photos of wherever they are and use them as the “environment” to go fishing in.

The Virtual Masters Reel aims at providing a full user sensory fishing experience to players in numerous ways. Instead of merely pushing different colored buttons on a standard handheld game, players actually cast the rod into the ocean (or whatever environment they are fishing in), and based on the strength and angle of the cast, the distance of the float is recorded and players physically wind the virtual spool up to the desired displayed depth. When a blue virtual fish approaches the float, the player is alerted with a vibration and must give the device a tug to hook the prey. As they are reeling the virtual fish in, the screen displays a tension meter, which (based on the strength) causes the reel to actually bend accordingly, and is surprisingly realistic. The fiestier the fish, the stronger the bend, and the more difficult it is to reel it in; reflected in a tightening of the fishing line. Finally, using the tension meter as a guide, the player claims his prize with one last powerful tug on the rod.

The AR segment in Takara Tomy’s new toy is an interesting added feature. Its built in camera can take photos to be stored on a miniSD card, which can then be transferred onto a computer. Unfortunately the reverse is not possible, but an updated version where any picture can be transferred to be used as a fishing arena would be a nice touch. This would allow fishermen to do the impossible, such as catching prey in the grand canyon by simply downloading a picture of it from Google Images. The sound effects also enhance the realism with specific sounds such as the bait hitting the water, the water ripples, and the flight of the float as users cast out.

The Virtual Masters Reel game can appeal to all age groups, regardless of whether they have had previous fishing experience or not. It is exciting to see the term AR being used in such toys enjoyed by a wide range of consumers, rather than hi-tech machines that only tech savvy users know how to operate. Takara Tomy predicts that with the recent turn towards outdoor leisure activities, the famous “Yama (Mountain) Girls” would be followed by “Tsuri (Fishing) Girls” this year (there area already enough girls in Tokyo already walking around in wellington boots!), supporting July’s release date.

Project Blox is like any other toy that comes with 300 pages of documentation (video)

If your kid (or inner kid) turns their nose up at those delectable Sifteo Cubes, it’ll obviously be because they want open source smart building blocks instead. So oblige the budding geek with Project Blox, courtesy of electrical engineering students at the University of Texas at Austin. Every toddler-friendly block has its own LCD and touch panels, plus motion sensors and wireless comms that let it interact with other blocks in weird and wonderful ways — like the maze game you’ll see in the video after the break. Project Blox is still very much a project, unfortunately, but its creators have put all their code and schematics online so baby Einstein can have a go at building his own.

Super Soaker Hydro Cannon: It’ll Make You Very, Very Wet

The Super Soakers of yore were precision weapons. Small. Thin, accurate squirts. A continuous aquatic laser beam. No more. The Hydro Cannon acts just like it sounds: It’s a crude, brutish instrument. More »

Pleo bares it all for FCC approval

Poor Pleo. Everyone fell in love with the little green dino at first sight, but no one actually bought the thing. Undaunted, the adorable fleshy robot made a triumphant return at this year’s CES as Pleo RB (that’s “Reborn”), with the help of adopted manufacturer Innvo Labs. The newly invigorated ‘bot brings voice recognition, more sensors, and RFID-based command learning technology to the table. With all its new gear in place, Pleo was poked, prodded, and peeled by the FCC, revealing, among other things, that new RFID reader in its chin. The results are gruesome and not recommended for faint of heart robot dinosaur lovers. You’ve been warned.

Hasbro’s My3D to turn iPhones into glorified ViewMasters starting Sunday

It’s about time the ViewMaster got an upgrade. What’s that? It’s not a ViewMaster? Well, you could have fooled us, but either way, the thing’s finally going on sale exclusively at Target April 3rd, and everywhere else starting in June. As you might have already heard, Hasbro’s intro into the crowded 3D arena, simply titled My3D, does take a card from the old ViewMaster deck, but instead of enlisting cardboard discs, this thing uses your iPhone or iPod touch to bring you 3D entertainment. If your kid’s not already hooked on 3D, the $35 viewer could be a decent starter — then again, for $35 you could take yourself out to a nice lunch, give the rug rat a cardboard box, and call it a day. Full PR after the break.

Twimal the Twitter reader reads your tweets, looks adorable while doing so (video)

If you fancy using Twitter as much as we do, you’ll probably scream like a pre-teen when you lay your eyeballs on what toy maker Takara Tomy has conjured up in Japan. Dubbed Twimal, this loveable Pokemon-esque desk companion plugs into your Windows machine via USB and has one reason for its existence — to read your tweets. If you’re interested in getting your 140-character messages read in the cutest way possible, look for these toys on digital shelves in Japan on March 31 for ¥2,480 (around 30 bucks). And do yourself a favor; watch the video after the break. You’ll thank us later.

Green Lantern Power Battery Replica Won’t Give You Super Powers

Green Lantern

The upcoming Green Lantern movie is shaping up to be a blockbuster. Trailers appear on the Web to much fanfare, and the first set of merch has started to appear.
Ironically though, this item isn’t aimed at everyday fans of the movie or the comic book and not destined for store shelves or toy stores: this Green Lantern Movie Power Battery Replica is aimed only at the most hardcore movie fans. Only 2500 of the replicas will be produced, and when they’re all sold out, they’re gone forever.
The replica Power Battery will ship with a size 14 Green Lantern Ring, and when you bring the ring close to the lantern, the two will glow a bright green.
The closer you bring them, the brighter they get. The lantern is 15-inches tall, and the whole package will retail for $289.99 at retail. If you’re willing to drop the cash, you’ll be able to get your hands on one in July.

Tokyo Gift Show 2011 round-up and video

Held twice a year at Tokyo Big Sight, the Tokyo Gift Show 2011 always features a myriad array of gifts and toys: some practical, some fun, and some useless of course.

This year’s fair was branded with the slogan “Creativity and Discovery: Interchange with the New World” and there were many “Japan Brand” goods that connected new lifestyle with Japanese culture and tradition. Basically this means a lot of contemporary lifestyle or gadget accessories that feature recognizably “Japanese” motifs and patterns. This can manifest in everything from calculators to pouches for your iPod, or even suitcases and letter openers.

Perhaps a more sophisticated take on this theme were the products marrying modern Japanese design with cooking customs. Cue plenty of stylish bento lunch boxes and rice-cooking bamboo charcoal pots, all of which certainly look a million times better than the cheap gear you can pick up at the 100-yen store.

Local health and beauty products are always innovative. We blogged recently about the Beauty Lift High Nose and there were some similar products at the Gift Show, including a special rolling cushion for slimming your lower body, and even a Happy Smile Trainer — a mouthpiece that can help give you a better smile.

Actual big new gadgets were few and far between, though some of the more fun ones are guaranteed to be prove addictive. Particular favorites were the Ningen Gakki — a multi-player musical instrument that generates sounds and notes by touch — and the Beer Hour automatic beer can drink dispenser, both from the masters of amusement, Takara Tomy.
