iOS 4.3.1 released, fixes a few bugs

Apple’s just dropped iOS 4.3.1 on iTunes users across the land, fixing a handful of issues related to enterprise apps, AV-out, iPod touch graphics problems, and cellular network connections; not the most exciting changelog, but it’s better than a slap across the face. As usual, the update is available for pretty much the full suite of iOS products — iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch alike. Go on, grab it!

Xperia X10 to get Android 2.3 this summer, makes us rub our eyes in disbelief

Who’s in charge of Sony Ericsson today and what did they do with the old crew? Reversing a previous statement saying there’ll be no Android updates for its Xperia X10 family beyond Eclair, SE has just announced that it’ll bring Gingerbread to the X10 at the end of Q2 / start of Q3 this year. That’s right around this summer, when we should expect a user experience roughly equivalent to that on the new Xperia Arc, Neo and Play devices, whose Gingerbread implementation looks to have served as the basis for the elder X10’s upcoming update. Seriously, Gingerbread on the X10, we still can’t believe it.

P.S. – If you’re wondering about the X10 Mini, X10 Mini Pro or X8, those are all stuck on Android 2.1.

Microsoft serves up a ‘NoDo’ update schedule for Windows Phone 7 devices

Where is your Windows Phone 7 “NoDo” update? That’s the question Microsoft is aiming to answer with a new spreadsheet it has cobbled together to detail the software status of all WP7 handsets released so far. A February preparatory patch and the long-anticipated first proper upgrade to the OS, herein titled merely “March update,” are sat side by side, with a set of delivery states under them for each WP7 phone. Things aren’t looking awesome in the US, where AT&T’s batch is still undergoing carrier testing and T-Mobile’s pair of phones are “scheduling” (which Microsoft says takes no more than 10 days), but news is better overseas, where most have received the February OTA and are mere days away from the final NoDo goodness. Sprint’s HTC Arrive and AT&T’s upcoming HD7S will both have that software preloaded, so at least new buyers won’t have to fret unduly.

Sprint Epic 4G, Galaxy Tab get Sprint ID this week, Epic’s Froyo update makes triumphant return

Rumors about this started swirling last week, but Sprint and Samsung have just made it official that the Epic 4G and Galaxy Tab will both be getting firmware updates this week that add Sprint ID, the carrier’s Android skin / theme platform first introduced on the Transform, Optimus S, and Zio last year. For the Epic, the update will also mark the return of Android 2.2 — Froyo had already made a brief official appearance for Epic owners several weeks back, but bug woes led to a quick pull and a temporary return to Eclair. Looks like the updates start rolling out today, with all current owners having access to the updates by this Thursday, the 24th. Follow the break for the full press release.

Creative’s 7-inch ZiiO tablet gets Froyo this Friday, 10-inch model to follow suit

If you happen to be one of the handful of Creative ZiiO tablet users, then we have good news for you: come Friday, the 7-incher will be the first of the Ziio duo to receive its Froyo update, whereas its 10-inch sibling’s expected to follow suit by April. So what’s new? Well, the list includes greater language support, new passcode options, the ability to install apps onto external storage, and a text-to-speech engine. Once available, you can obtain the update from either Creative’s website or the tablets’ ZiiO Space portal; but by all means, feel free to butter up the folks over at xda-developers to slap some Honeycomb onto these ZiiOs instead.

Motorola Milestone achieves Android 2.2 milestone at last, Froyo update ready for download

The road to Android 2.1 may have been a long and treacherous one for Milestone users, but the one to Android 2.2 wasn’t even certain of reaching its goal. Thankfully, Moto has managed to conclude its “exhaustive testing process” and is now making a Froyo firmware update available to Milestone users wishing to step their software up a notch. Flash Player 10.1, a faster browser and mobile hotspot capabilities await the intrepid updater, but Motorola warns that any DRM-locked media you have on your SD card will be lost. Weirdly enough, there’s also a caution that “users may experience some adverse effects associated with the upgrade which could include slower operation of some phone functions and applications.” Once you’ve read and understood all the warnings, smash the source link to download the new software.

Microsoft taking ‘extra time’ to make sure Windows Phone 7 copy and paste update is solid, targeting late March

Eric Hautala — the cog in the Microsoft machine responsible for Windows Phone 7’s update mechanism — has taken to the company’s official Windows Phone blog today to deep-dive on some of the concerns, problems, and delays that have dogged the platform’s updates so far. In brief, Hautala says that the glitches that hosed the small February update for a few customers has brought the company to pause and take the time to make sure everything’s rock solid before proceeding with the so-called NoDo update — which includes copy and paste, performance improvements, and CDMA support — and had originally been scheduled for the early part of March. Now, they’re looking at “the latter half of March,” which lines up with what Microsoft France had reported yesterday. He goes on to say that the problems have zero effect on the timeline for awesome new features previewed at MWC last month, which would seem to allay fears that the Mango update had been pushed to 2012. Needless to say, Windows Phone’s still got some catching up to do — so that’s good news.

Microsoft France pegs Windows Phone 7’s copy and paste update for second half of March

We’d heard “early March” being thrown around for the so-called NoDo update to Windows Phone 7 that includes support for copy and paste (along with performance tweaks and a CDMA stack that’ll allow Sprint’s HTC Arrive to go about its business) back at MWC, but it looks like that may have slipped a tad: Microsoft France’s official PR blog is now trumpeting the second half of this month, which means you can probably stop checking your phone for updates every 15 minutes and regain some semblance of sanity and normalcy in your life for a few days. Legendary Microsoft insider Mary Jo Foley says her sources are telling her that the week of March 21st is looking likely — conveniently the week of CTIA and the Arrive’s launch — so that would make some sense.

Palm Pre 2 gets official webOS 2.1 update, Classic emulator hacked to work on it

Hey, Pre 2 owners: want the webOS 2.1 action that Germans have been enjoying on their Pre Pluses for a couple weeks now? Of course you do — and HP’s got your back. The new update’s been posted with support for the Touchstone’s Exhibition mode, Voice Dial, and a plethora of updates to existing apps throughout the system (interestingly, the unlocked Pre 2 seems to have the Rogers model’s update information, but we’re pretty sure it makes no difference).

On a related note, remember Classic? The old-school Palm OS emulator for webOS was so neat back during the Pre’s introduction that Palm worked closely with the developer to get it supported and available — but when webOS 2.0 happened, Palm dropped the emulator like a hot potato by removing critical stuff from the platform’s updated libraries. Well, with some sweat, blood, and a whole lot of elbow grease, it appears that PreCentral forum members have somehow managed to get Classic working on webOS 2.1 once again — and you can, too, with a ten-step procedure. It feels like Palm OS is becoming more of a vintage novelty than a mission-critical platform by the day, but hey, we can understand the sentimental value.

Motorola will upgrade your Xoom to 4G LTE — even if you’ve rooted it

Happy news for Android tinkerers everywhere — Motorola has officially confirmed it will attempt to perform its 4G upgrade on all Verizon Wireless-riding Xoom tablets it receives from users, whether they’ve been rooted, repainted, or accessorized with fluffy dice. Naturally, the company can’t guarantee successful software updates on devices that have had their OS tweaked, so it asks users to be kind and rewind to the original firmware state. For those unwilling to stretch that far back, Moto will still give it a shot and says that it’ll install the 4G LTE modem at a minimum. What a refreshingly open-minded attitude. Now if Moto could give us an open-minded bootloader on its phones as well, we’d be all set.
