Verizon Hub Phone Review

The Verizon Hub is unstuck in time. It’s a 2006 device that’s just getting here, now, in 2009, begging the question, “Is it better to be late than never?”

The Hub is a landline slayer launched in a wireless world, where the landline is almost dead. It’s a fertile garden behind a red-painted wall—red ’cause it’s Verizon, har har—found when most people are trying to break down those walls. It’s a Verizon Wireless VoIP phone coming about at a time when AT&T is killing their VoIP service entirely. It’s the phone we imagined before the iPhone, tethered to our home broadband connection for instant-pizza-ordering awesomeness. In other words, it’s a lot of interesting things, appearing in the wrong place and at the wrong time.

That’s not to say it’s bad. It’s just unfortunate. The Hub makes sense in a very specific context: If you’re a lock, stock and barrel Verizon customer, from wireless to TV to internet to, obviously, landline phone service. That’s where the “Hub” name comes in—it brings a bunch of different Verizon services together in one spot: You can monitor cellphone locations using Verizon’s Chaperone, send maps and directions from the Hub to phones running VZ Navigator, and manage a central calendar that your entire family’s phones sync to. Eventually, you’ll be able to do more, like manage your Verizon FiOS TV DVR. While a minor point, in a sense it’s a very sore point with the Hub, since you can already do that from many Verizon cellphones this very second. Why do I need a Hub again?

The garden walls reach their greatest heights when you try to text or picture message to a non-Verizon phone—you can’t. The calendar isn’t open, using a standard like CalDAV for easy export—it’s squarely in Verizonland. A surprising amount of managing the Hub actually takes place on Verizon’s website, like uploading contacts (via CSV files) and photos. Thankfully, the Hub’s pages are better designed than the rest of Verizon’s website—there’s legit eye candy in the photo gallery, for instance. And nearly anything you can do on the Hub itself, you can do from the website remotely, like manage voicemail or check your call history. But it’s odd you can’t do something very simple like upload photos via the Hub’s USB port.

It doesn’t really matter if there are walls around the garden if you’re never tempted to leave. Unfortunately, the Hub isn’t enough of an attraction. Pretty much anything you can do on it—buy movie tickets, send text messages, check traffic or watch videos, you can do faster or better on your computer or cellphone. The virtually useless selection of VCAST videos make the average YouTube video feel like HD in comparison, and the “traffic report” isn’t a map with live traffic info, but a canned audio briefing from Traffic.com that you have to sit through an ad to hear.

The Linux OS itself isn’t particularly a joy. God knows, Verizon’s committed some horrible user interface atrocities over the last few years, but at least the Hub’s is alright—usable, not mind-blowing. I wish it moved faster. The keyboard is annoying to type on, but it’ll get better in the next software update, which adjusts the spacing and adds pop-up letters. A persistent set of buttons on the left gives you constant, instant access to the two main menus: The phone and the uh, menu, where you get to your apps. In the top right corner is the home button, which takes you to the desktop, where your widgets, like for weather, time, voicemail, etc. hang out. Applications tend to have a two-pane layout that’s framed by buttons on three sides, which doesn’t sound like a problem, but it becomes one since the touchscreen is not so responsive around the edges. I’ve accidentally called two people at 3 in the morning while trying to press the menu button. Not cool.

Actually, that’s one of my more concrete frustrations with this phone: The hardware feels cheap and shitty. The handset, which costs $80 a pop, is a plastic piece of garbage with a shoddy build quality and terrible screen. (It doesn’t help that you can’t do much from the handset either, like send text messages.) The touchscreen isn’t as responsive as it should be, and it distorts with even the slightest bit of pressure, adding to the whole crappy feeling. A screen designed to be touched shouldn’t freak out when you touch it. The speakers really harsh, crappy and tinny too. I couldn’t stand using it for loudspeaker calls.

There are a few bright points. While the directory isn’t as precise as say, MenuPages, it is fairly painless to find a nearby pizza place and call them in a single stroke. The synergistic—I know, that word provokes a gag reflex—stuff works well. Directions quickly went to the Samsung Sway test phone I got with it, which promptly fired up VZ Navigator and pointed to wherever I pointed it. (Too bad VZ Navigator is slow and sucky, but that’s somewhat besides the point.) And the call quality itself is pretty good—or at least I sounded “loud and clear” to the people I called.

The brightest light may end up being the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel—the promise that developers will be able to create their own apps for this thing in the future. The included ones, for the most part, just aren’t that hot, and some of the newer ones in the pipeline are definitely more head-turning. But it’s hard to see how this product can sustain itself long enough to engender a solid third-party developer community. More likely, it’ll get slightly better, then go extinct.

It’s pretty ballsy to charge $200 for a landline phone with $35/month VoIP service right now, one that does the same thing you can do on an iPhone or G1, but is tied to your desk. Which is a lot of the reason I like it. But it’s just as ridiculous to ask that much for a phone that’s built with subpar hardware and doesn’t live up to its full potential in a world where it’s already horribly outmoded. Verizon’s iPhone-like Hub 2 hands-on

We had a chance to sit down and play with Verizon’s next iteration of its Hub (already guys?), and while it wasn’t a mind-blowing affair, they do seem to making some moves in the right direction. Firstly, the new version is detached from the handset completely — right now at least — making it much more of a “fourth screen” internet device, and less of what you’d think of as a standard landline… er, VoIPline. The redesigned unit is considerably more contemporary in industrial design as well, making it look something like a big iPhone — which is probably what they’re hoping for. We were told the screen is still resistive touch, though it seemed a little more responsive than the original unit we toyed around with.

Additionally, Verizon is working on further updating the software, adding new functionality like internet radio, a Webkit browser (which is kind of a no-brainer here), and yes — an app store (or as they call it, the App Mart). The idea seems to be about moving the Hub more towards a role as another connected device for a kitchen or living room, and less about trying to sell it as a fancy phone, and that’s definitely a step in the right direction. Verizon is still tweaking the box and adding features, but what we saw is very promising indeed. Now, if they just throw in some Bluetooth support, a speakerphone option, and lose that dated looking handset altogether (all suggestions we made when we met with them), we might be seeing the start of something magical.

Carriers could be forced by EU to support VoIP services

We’ve seen it time and time again — carriers using their power to strong-arm consumers into paying services that could very well be free. Over in Europe, the almighty EU is considering “binding guidelines” that could force wireless operators to allow VoIP services such as Skype to run over their cellular networks. It should be noted that all of this is still very preliminary at the moment, but if the Union can somehow force carriers to support these so-called “innovative services,” we could see a very favorable (for consumers, anyway) domino effect. As it stands, each EU country has the ability to decide individually on how they deal with blocked internet services, but obviously an EU-wide mandate would seriously shake things up. Or cause unstoppable riots, one.

We didn’t happen to spot Nelly’s shiny new BlackBerry Storm on last night’s Gossip Girl, but we did see that cast-wide Verizon contract rubbed in our faces again. Verizon’s newest non-cellphone (that’d be the Hub) made a brief appearance at the tail end of the episode to inform Lily van der Woodsen that her dearest Serena had reverted to her old carefree ways and hopped a private jet to Spain. Hope she took a worldphone over there, else making that “I’m here!” call is going to be just a wee bit difficult in GSM world.

Ears-On With Skype for iPhone

Img_0004_3 Skype has, at last, come to the iPhone. Everyone’s favorite VoIP application is Wi-Fi-only — of course — but what is there works great. The best news, though, is for iPod Touch owners. Because Skype is Wi-Fi-only, if you have a 2G Touch and headphones with a microphone, you get the same functionality as the iPhone.

Let me make that clearer. This official, Apple-sanctioned application turns an iPod into a telephone. And it’s free. I took it for a very quick spin to see how it worked.

Skype is a very solid and polished application for a first release — it’s good to see that some developers resisted the urge to release crap in the App Store’s first week. After installing the 2.7MB app, you enter your username and password. You then see your contacts list. You can either see all contacts and narrow them down by typing into the search field, or opt to see only online contacts. It looks just as you would expect:

Touch a contact and you get the usual Skype choices: call or chat. Chatting works just like IM, with you and your chat partner’s pictures showing up next to speech bubbles containing the text. Neat and easy. You can also switch between chats and the app keeps your old chats so you can pick up where you left off.

But you really want to know about the phone part, right? In short, it works fine. Or, more accurately, it works as well as Skype on the desktop which means mixed quality and reliability. That’s a network issue, though — Skype for iPhone as software is probably even better than the desktop version.

I hooked up my Apple-made iPod headphones with remote and microphone. A test call to the Lady (after I woke her up) worked fine: Although the sound was very low on my end, she could hear me very clearly. There is, of course, no video. Here are a couple of shots:

As you can see, all the usual phone features are there, arranged in a very iPhone-like way. If you have a Skype account which includes Skype Out or you have a Skype number, you can use those to make and receive calls from regular phones. Dial just as you would with an iPhone:

The address book icon at the bottom calls up the standard iPhone/iPod Touch address book and will paste in numbers therefrom. I couldn’t try this part as I no longer use Skype Out since my parents entered the 21st century and came off dialup.

The conclusion? If you are a Skype user, you should have this application. It’s free, it is easy to use and just works. Being limited to Wi-Fi means it won’t change the face of telephony — yet. But for Skype the move to mobile devices is an inevitable step, and when the iPhone OS 3.0 surfaces, we should get call and chat notifications showing on the home screen and maybe even a plugin mic for the iPod Touch, making it a proper VoIP handset.

Skype for iPhone goes live in Japan

When they said “Tuesday,” they meant it. Not long ago, the clock struck midnight in the Land of the Rising Sun, and sure enough, the bona fide Skype application (v1.0.0.63) for Apple’s iPhone has gone live. It’s absolutely free to download, and early reports from Japan have been pretty stellar in regard to sound quality. We’re fully expecting it to roll out elsewhere as Tuesday (March 31st) arrives in various time zones, so make sure you (and at least one Skype buddy) stay up late to try ‘er out. [Warning: iTunes read link may not work for all time zones yet.]

Skype App coming to iPhone on Tuesday, Blackberry in May

It’s legit; Skype is coming to the iPhone on Tuesday, BlackBerry devices in May. While we’ve seen plenty of Skype-capable apps on the iPhone, the poor, often echo-infected calls should be easily bested by the official Skype App that doesn’t need the extra audio transcoding workaround required by the existing crop of unofficial apps. The Skype app works over WiFi only (not over EDGE or 3G data) and supports calls to SkypeOut contacts in addition to many of the other features you’ve used from the desktop client. iPod touch owners will require earphones with an embedded mic to talk. CNET has a hands-on preview of the App just as long as you can muster the energy required to hit the read link below.

Skype Coming to iPhone Tuesday, BlackBerry in May

Landing a day earlier than predicted, Skype’s official iPhone client will show its green ‘n’ white face in the App Store tomorrow. The other conspicuously neglected market, BlackBerry owners, can expect a client by May.

The iPhone client feature set is more or less what we’ve come to expect from Skype mobile apps: free Skype-to-Skype calls, SkypeOut support, pretty interface integration (they went with the iPhone aesthetic over the Skype desktop aesthetic, thankfully) and instant messaging to other users. You can even snap a profile picture from within the app. The app will also support 2G iPod Touches with external mics.

But! For those of you who held onto the vain hope that an official client might be able to somehow skirt the universal App Store ban on voice over IP over 3G (VoIPo3G?), forget it—you won’t be able to Skype unless you’re connected to a wireless network, and text messaging has been entirely excluded. You can’t even top up your SkypeOut account or purchase other services like voicemail, which, by the way, can’t be accessed from the app.

Not to poop on Skype’s party, but this announcement leaves me with questions—specifically, why should I download this? Third party apps like Fring picked up Skype’s slack a long time ago, and lump in multiprotocol IMing, something which gives them a distinct advantage over this official client on the one-app-at-a-time-please iPhone. Skype told CNET that their app will have better voice quality (and probably lower latency), but aside from that was unable to offer many significant advantages over other apps. Skype for iPhone coming soon?

We’re still filing this away in the rumor folder for now, but we’ll be honest — this is totally believable. GigaOM has it on authority that a bona fide Skype for iPhone client will be launched as early as next week, and with CTIA kicking off on April 1st, we’d say the timing is just about ideal. Of course, we’ve already seen a variety of alternatives for bringing Skype and other VoIP apps to Apple’s darling, but by and large, they’ve been supremely unimpressive. There’s no word on pricing (we’re crossing our fingers for free) or any other tasty tidbits, but you can bet we’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for more.

Zer01 is the new, contract-less MVNO that will bring VOIP to the mobile masses

2008 marked the end for many a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), most going under in a flood of bankruptcies or getting consumed but their parent networks. It sure seems like no company in its right mind would want to wade back into that graveyard, but Zer01 is thinking differently, pledging to launch a new network within a network next month at CTIA 2009. Its services will be provided by AT&T, but it’ll undercut the competition with a combination of a $69.95 monthly unlimited voice and data plan and a complete lack of contracts, as well as unlimited international calling (to 40 countries) for just an extra $10. What’s the catch? The company will rely on a VOIP application for routing of all calls, and right now that app only works on Windows Mobile. That’ll be a roadblock for many, and given AT&T’s somewhat limited (and generally flaky) 3G data coverage we’re a little concerned about call quality, but just the same can’t wait to see how this one turns out.
