MSI Wind Top AE2420 3D all-in-one review
Posted in: CoreI7, msi, multitouch, review, Today's Chili, touchscreen, windows 7, Windows7When MSI builds an “all-in-one” PC, it doesn’t mess around — the MSI Wind Top AE2420 3D has everything but the kitchen sink ensconced in a plastic frame. Where most consolidated computers aim for the lowest common denominator with low-power components, MSI’s dropped a high-end multimedia bomb here — a 23.6-inch, 120Hz, 1080p, LED-backlit touchscreen LCD panel paired with a desktop-grade 2.53GHz Core i7-860S processor, Mobility Radeon HD 5730 graphics, a Blu-ray drive, 4GB of RAM, and a terabyte of storage. Active shutter glasses spit out 3D images to your eyes while THX speakers (and a built-in subwoofer) pump out jams, and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth and USB 3.0 sockets round out a connectivity laundry list. It’s got a spec sheet to die for and an equally lethal $1,800 price — but is the AE2420 3D more than a bucket of primo parts? Is it worth your cash?

Windows and Mac OS X make it onto the Cr-48, look great in matte black
Posted in: Google, hack, mac os x, MacOsX, os x, OsX, Today's Chili, video, Windows, windows 7, Windows7Google built the Cr-48 with hacking in mind, so it’s no surprise that we’re seeing other operating systems crop up. Still, it’s fun to watch, and enterprising hackers have got most of the usual suspects up and running: first Ubuntu, and now Mac OS X and Windows. It sounds like a lot of work, and we pledged that 2011 was going to be the year we sat on our asses and didn’t do anything hard, but you’re welcome to give it a shot! Just hit up those source links below for instructions, and follow after the break for video of OS X in action.
[Thanks Damian W.]

HTC Media Link DLNA streamer review
Posted in: GalaxyS, HTC, media streamer, MediaStreamer, Microsoft, review, samsung, streamer, streaming, streaming video, StreamingVideo, Today's Chili, video, windows 7, Windows7Apple’s AirPlay might be getting all the attention lately but it’s hardly the first solution for wirelessly streaming media to the television. Far from it. In 2003, the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) formed with its first set of interoperable products hitting the market in 2004. Since then, the alliance has certified thousands of products supported by more than 245 member companies, 29 of whom are listed as “promoter members” including such heavyweights as Sony, Nokia, Samsung, Toshiba, Verizon, AT&T Lab, LG, Qualcomm, Cisco, Microsoft, Panasonic, Intel, HP, and Motorola. Pretty much everyone but Apple. Recently, HTC joined the DLNA ranks with the introduction of two smartphones — the Desire Z and Desire HD — and a tiny media streamer known as the HTC Media Link, HTC’s first attempt to gain a foothold in the living room. Over the last week we’ve been testing the Desire Z (a Eurofied T-Mobile G2) with the Media Link, lazily streaming video, music, and images around the house using a myriad of sources and controllers from Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, and Western Digital. How did it perform? Click through to find out.

ASUS EP121, EP102, EP101, and EP71 tablets get diagramed in latest teaser
Posted in: Android, ASUS, slate, slider, tablet, teaser, Today's Chili, Windows, windows 7, Windows7Haven’t had enough CES titillation yet? Good. ASUS has apparently been up to some mischief overnight in uploading and then pulling a new version of its teaser video from a week ago, though this time it also included explicit product names attached to some quite informative diagrams. It looks to be the full family of upcoming CES tablets, with the EP121 touting stylus input and a wireless keyboard, the EP102 showing that there will indeed be a slider in ASUS’ Pad family, and the EP101 looking like, well, a laptop. There’s also a media-centric EP71, whose proportions make it seem likely to be a sort of oversized PMP. Skip past the break for a closer look at them all and don’t forget to grace our comments with your theory as to why ASUS feels compelled to have such a segmented product offering.

HP slashes Envy 13 price to $999 with $450 rebate
Posted in: HP, laptop, price, pricing, sale, thin and light, ThinAndLight, Today's Chili, windows 7, Windows7First it was the Adamo, now it’s the Envy. HP has joined Dell in deeply discounting its aging 13-inch ultrathin, though unlike its Round Rock competitor, it hasn’t bothered to give it any spec bumps. Consequently, even with this interest-building $450 rebate, the Envy 13 loses out to the Adamo 13 in a straight spec fight — a 1.6GHz CPU, 3GB of DDR3 RAM and a 5400RPM hard drive are all either slower or smaller than Dell’s offering — but it does still have a pair of aces up its sleeve to get latecomers to part with their cash. Those include an external SuperMulti DVD rewriter and a discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 GPU with 512MB of dedicated memory. Sure, it’s not much, but then neither is the new price.

LG Xnote P210 claims ‘world’s thinnest bezel’ title, our undying appreciation
Posted in: CoreI5, korea, laptop, LG, South Korea, SouthKorea, Today's Chili, Windows, windows 7, Windows7If there’s one thing we appreciate more than pixel density, it’s slim bezels. LG, a traditional enemy of unsightly frames, is today staking its claim for having the world’s thinnest bezel on a laptop with the new Xnote P210. This 12.5-inch machine is said to fit within the footprint of an 11.6-incher, but before you start throwing insults like “netbook” around the place, do take note it has a dual-core Core i5-470UM processor inside — capable of running between 1.33GHz and 1.86GHz — 4GB of RAM, and a 320GB HDD. The LED-backlit display’s resolution isn’t specified beyond a note saying it’s “HD,” while Windows 7 Home Premium is the predictable OS of choice. Look for the P210 to hit Korea in February for around 1.3 million won (about $1,135), but don’t hold your breath on it coming Stateside for anything other than a flying trade show visit.

Microsoft announced last night that they’ve come up with with a name for Windows 7. You might be expecting something along the lines of “XP” or “Vista,” but they aren’t going that route this time around. They’ve actually decided to go back to their roots and call the next major release “Windows 7.” This is just like the old days when Microsoft named milestones based on version (3.11, etc…) or year (95, 98, etc…).
It will be weird to refer to a version of Windows again simply by a number, but I’m sure that’s a decision Microsoft has spent a lot of time considering. Of course Apple tends to go with both conventions: providing a number (10.4, 10.5, etc…) and also an easy to remember name (Tiger, Leopard, etc…). Hopefully Microsoft is making the right choice.
I think the biggest thing for most users in Windows 7 are improvements to how User Account Control (UAC) works. ZDNet noticed that even Symantec has come up with their own UAC replacement that contains the much requested “don’t ask me again” feature:
We’ll know in the coming weeks some of the things that we can expect from Windows 7 since the PDC and WinHEC events are right around the corner. Hopefully they won’t just talk about the stuff we already know about.

ASUS 12-inch Windows 7 ‘Eee Slate’ EP121 and more teased for 2011 (updated)
Posted in: 10-inch, 7-inch, Android, ASUS, qualcomm, tablet, tegra 2, Tegra2, Today's Chili, video, windows 7, Windows7It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything official from ASUS about its 12-inch EP121 tablet announced back at Computex in May. That changes today as ASUS Chairman, Jonney Shih, promises an “Eee for everyone” at CES 2011 — and that’s not an exaggeration what with 7-, 9-, 10-, and 12-inch Armdroid and Wintel tablets expected. While the video doesn’t show the physical EP121 first revealed as a prototype in Taipei, it does call it an “Eee Slate” (not an “Eee Pad” like before) while demonstrating pen-based input on the multitouch display riding Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system and a Core i5 processor. Naturally, ASUS is also promising better performance and more flexibility than existing tablets. Don’t worry, we’ll be getting hands-on with this beast in a few weeks before it hits retail sometime (somewhere) in January. Until then, you can watch the teaser after the break.
Update: DigiTimes claims that the EP121 will target enterprise customers when launched. Additionally, two 10-inch Eee Pads (one with Windows 7 on Oak Trail and one with Android on Tegra 2) will hit retail as early as March for $499 to $599. Meanwhile, 7-inch Android models will also launch as early as March featuring either Tegra 2 or Qualcomm chipsets with at least one model featuring a “3.5G” radio for “phone functionality.”
[Thanks, Sal]
