We’re live from Nokia World 2011!

You’ve probably already gathered from our liveblog teaser and early look at one of tomorrow’s announcements, but we’re just settling in at Nokia World. And it really does feel like we’re a world away from the conference’s host city on London — the venue Nokia selected to host its growing event is quite a distance from Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and that famous big clock tower downtown. Stay tuned for plenty of Windows Phone (and perhaps even Symbian) coverage throughout the week, and don’t forget our liveblog of today’s keynote!

Pro tip: Use the “nokiaworld2011” tag for direct access to this week’s Nokia news!

Windows XP turns 10, enjoys its golden years and slow transition into retirement

Windows XP

It’s hard to believe that it was ten years ago today that Windows XP first hit retail shelves. It’s even more astonishing when you realize that it was still the most popular operating system in the world until the beginning of this month. The sun may finally be setting on the stalwart OS that has powered countless home and business PCs (it crossed the 400 million mark way back in 2006), but it’s still number two — right behind it’s youngest brother Windows 7 and well ahead of the black sheep, Vista. Sure, our relationship with Microsoft’s OS has had its ups and downs, but it’s clear we’ve developed an attachment to the ol’ bird. After all, consumer demand kept it shipping on PCs until late 2010 and Redmond has pledged to support it until April 8th of 2014. If nothing else, XP will be remembered for its incredible resilience.

[Thanks, Jacob]

Free and Easy Print to PDF App for Windows

This article was written on August 05, 2011 by CyberNet.

Print to pdf

I use PDF printers quite a bit since I’ve grown accustomed to having the feature built-in on my Mac. In order to do this on a Windows machine you’ll need a third-party application, and there are quite a few that you can choose from. Most of them all do the same thing, but we came across one recently that we liked.

The reason why I think Dora PDF Writer stands out is because it doesn’t try to install any toolbars or other apps during the setup process, and it is pretty simple to use. There aren’t a lot of configuration options that you can choose from, but it has the basics such as encryption, save-to location, and some meta properties for the PDF that will get generated. The screenshot above is what you’ll see when you choose Dora as your printer.

This is also compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows, which is nice since I’ve seen some that don’t support 64-bit yet. If you’re in the market for an app like this I’d say it’s worth the minute it will take to download and install it.

Nokia 800 gets pictured, ready for its close-up

Thus far, evidence of the Nokia 800 has been the stuff of slow but reasonably steady leaks in the form of ads, product shots and dev stats. This latest one doesn’t do much to change the state of things, but its real world setting should help hold some of the Mango faithful over until the handset formerly known as Sea Ray gets officially official, most likely in the very near future.

Windows Vista 5381 Designated As Beta 2

Windows Vista 5381 Designated As Beta 2

With WinHEC right around the corner (about two weeks away) people are starting to find out which build of Vista Microsoft will hand out to attendees. Paul Thurrott has said that Microsoft is going to hand out Vista 5381 and this will be branded as Beta 2. Here is what he had to say:

Microsoft continues work on Vista build 5381, which will be finalized as Beta 2 on May 22. Attendees of the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2006 will receive Vista Beta 2 on DVD, and Microsoft plans to seed the build with testers, other partners, and millions of consumers via a widely distributed Community Preview Program (CPP) in the following days. If you’ve been waiting for a chance to get your hands on Vista, that day is finally coming.

The recent builds of Vista have definitely been getting progressively better. With the release of Beta 2 we might see an operating system that will be usable on a daily basis. I have heard many people talk about incompatible drivers which either causes the system to frequently crash or not even install. I am sure that these issues will be quickly addressed since Vista should have all of their features implemented by this point.

Want folders on your Windows Phone? There may soon be a way (video)

Take that, live tiles. The idea of having folders on a Windows Phone Start menu has long been a dream that may soon come true. Successfully demonstrated in the above video by WindowsPhoneHacker, these folders look just like live tiles, but pressing them will instead take you into a customized menu full of whatever apps you want. Of course, the project’s still in early stages and has a ways to go before it’s ready for primetime, but it’s supposed to be released sometime soon. Go ahead, click those heels together three times and make a wish — just make sure your device runs Mango and is developer-unlocked first.
