Augmented reality Tetris game uses Kinect hack, Wiimote, smooth jazz (video)

What does it take for a gaming classic to survive in a world ruled by titles like Portal 2 and Homefront? A Kinect hack, a Wiimote, and some electronic elbow grease, apparently. Trinity College student Keysosaurus — as he’s know to his YouTube pals — has used a bit of C#, XNA, and OpenNI coding to play 3D augmented reality Tetris using Kinect body controls and a Wiimote. The Kinect gestures do most of the work, rotating the board, zooming the camera in and out, and moving the pieces into place, while the Nintendo controller is used to rotate. Video’s after the break, but beware, the familiar strains of “Korobeiniki” have been replaced by smooth guitar jazz, so turn the volume up at your own risk.

Hulu Plus, Kinect updates for Xbox 360 caught on camera (update: video!)

Our friends at Joystiq have obtained screenshots showing off Hulu Plus in action on the console, as well as a shot of the Kinect Hub with Hulu and Netflix apps included. According to their tipster the Hulu (which looks similar to Zune Video as predicted) and Avatar Kinect apps are “fully functional,” with good tracking of their movements similar to existing uses for the peripheral. there’s no word on whether or not members of the larger public preview will get an early peek at these features, but you can still hit the source link below for a better look.

Update: The folks over at OmniTechNews have a hands-on video of Hulu Plus. Check it out after the break.

Netflix for Xbox 360 updated with Kinect support, everybody wave!

The next time you hit the Netflix app on your Xbox 360 the update we heard about at CES will be waiting, bringing Kinect owners the ability to flick through their videos (like ESPN3 and Zune have since the peripheral launched) without digging a controller out of the couch cushions. After the 43Mb update downloads waving ones hand for the camera or saying Xbox will pull up the new menu seen above, which auto sorts selections for browsing by voice or gesture based on what it thinks you may want to watch next. Selecting “browse all” brings you right back to the standard menu and is probably the method most will want to stick with, however being able to pause the movie quickly during playback by simply saying Xbox, Pause (or FF, rewind, skip scene, etc.) is quite convenient. Not near your Xbox? Check out a brief video of it in action after the break.

[Thanks, George]

Microsoft wants you to help set a Guinness world record for the biggest ever virtual sprint

Microsoft’s Kinect has already claimed one Guinness world record, and the company’s now asking for your help in setting another — don’t worry, though, you don’t have to buy anything else. It’s asking folks to take a bit of time during the free Xbox Live Gold preview weekend later this month to set a record for the “most people running a virtual 100m dash at one time.” To take part, all you have to do is download a free Xbox Nations gamer pic that will automatically register you for the record attempt, and then load up the sprint mini-game in Kinect Sports and start running at the time specified below. Everyone that takes part will get the snazzy Guinness World Records avatar tee pictured above for their trouble — actual Guinness certificates still have to be earned the hard way.

The Guinness World Record attempt will take place at:
o. 6pm UK Saturday 23/04
o. 7pm CET Saturday 23/04
o. 10am PDT Saturday 23/04
o. 1pm EDT Saturday 23/04

Similar to this is Google’s new feature that will allow users to add a background image to the Google homepage. It’s not interactive like Bing.com, but it adds a nice personal touch to the search page many of us visit numerous times throughout the day.

Xbox 360 Update Preview discs are in the mail

Xbox Live Update Preview Disc

If you signed up the Xbox 360 preview program it’s time to start camping out by your mailbox and pestering your delivery person — the update discs are shipping. A few lucky gamers now have their sneak peak at the next Xbox Live update and free copy of Halo: Reach in hand, and one was kind enough to send us the shot above to prove it. The disc bears a serious warning though: do not try and install it on a non-preview approved system. Doing so will completely disable Xbox Live until the update is officially released, which may be months away. So, if your friend got a disc don’t even think about trying to mooch your way into the beta program. After all, what fun is playing Halo if you’re stuck trying to save Reach by yourself?

[Thanks, Adam]

Halo 3 Pushes Xbox Sales to the Top!

This article was written on October 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

halo 3 console When Halo 3 broke the record in the video game industry by selling over 1 million pre-orders, we knew September was going to be a huge month for Microsoft. Not only did they sell millions of dollars worth of Halo 3 games, they also sold millions of dollars worth of Xbox 360 consoles.  The official numbers that detail how many Xbox 360 consoles actually sold won’t be released until Thursday (October 18th), but we’ve got a pretty good idea at just how great of a month it was thanks to Wedbush Morgan Analyst, Michael Pachter.

According to Pachter, Halo 3 helped sell 450,000 Xbox 360s in the month of September. The number he’s given means that the Xbox 360 outsold the Wii by 25,000 units. That doesn’t mean that the coming months will be all downhill for Microsoft though. Pachter went on to say “Although we think that sales of Halo 3 accounted for virtually all of the growth during the month, we think that the game drove hardware sales and positions the industry for even greater sales in November and December, when many Halo players will be ready for a new challenge.  We are optimistic about software sales through the end of the year.”

Here’s the breakdown of the predicted sales for the month of September:

  1. Xbox 360 – 450,000 units
  2. DS – 430,000 units
  3. Wii – 425,000 units
  4. PSP – 252,000 units
  5. PS2 – 222,000 units
  6. PS3 – 150,000 units
  7. GBA – 65,000 units

Another factor that probably helped the Xbox take the #1 spot is that conveniently timed price cut. Back in early August Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox 360 console by 50 dollars.  Considering Halo 3 costs a little over $50 for the standard edition, consumers were able to get the console plus the game for what the system originally cost. Not a bad deal!

In general, software sales are expected to reach $655 million this year which is 47% higher than in 2006.  With both the PS3 and the Wii launched late last year, it’s no surprise that 2007 will have been so successful. Pachter also predicts that a PS2 price cut is possible before the end of the year, and his guess is that it will be priced at $99! If that’s true, I imagine we’ll see software sales increase even further thanks to those who just can’t pass up a good deal on a console!

Silverlight coming to Xbox, bringing WP7 games along with it?

Silverlight coming to Xbox, bringing WP7 games along with it?

Silverlight started as just a humble Flash competitor and now, well, it’s all grown up. Almost, anyway. It’s a fundamental part of the Windows Phone 7 ecosphere and word on the street is that it’s about to become a fundamental part of the Xbox 360 world as well — or a part, at least. Microsoft’s MIX 11 developer event kicks off next week and rumor has it that Microsoft will unload a new tier of Silverlight compatibility enabling apps on the company’s console and there’s the potential for writing apps that could run both on phones and on the console. That sounds like some utopian dream-world of the future, where wavey-arm Kinect antics replace touchscreen swipes, but the bigger question is does the Xbox 360 really need another app store? Will this co-exist with the XNA-developed titles or supersede them? Is this why Xbox developer boxes just got a lot cheaper? Might we finally get Angry Birds on our HDTVs? Such delicious ponderings.

Xbox Development Kit arrives with ‘significantly reduced price,’ Sidecar attachment

What’s this, you ask? The next generation of Xbox 360 development, that’s what. With a shockingly small amount of fanfare, Microsoft has ushered in a striking new Xbox Development Kit, which is purportedly designed to increase efficiency and reduce cost for Xbox 360 dev teams. Aside from boasting an undisclosed uptick in RAM, built-in flash memory, a more capacious hard drive and a slimmer form factor, this XDK will also be sold at a “significantly reduced price from its predecessor.” ‘Course, the folks in Redmond aren’t saying what exactly that sticker will look like, but those interested in taking the plunge regardless will also have the option to license a Sidecar attachment that enables debugging and disc emulation. We’re told that said accessory can be shared among multiple XDK consoles, and in turn, it should lower the overall price to create, test, debug, and release an Xbox 360 or Xbox Live Arcade game. It’s still a guessing game when it comes to an actual launch date, but it’ll become “the standard kit” when new orders are fulfilled in the future. Feel free to peruse the gallery below if you’re interested, and toss out a wild guess as to what that Sidecar will go for on eBay during the next century. Aim high, bub!

Joy Division Coming to Rock Band 3

ian_curtis.jpg

Seriously. Why you would pick April 1st to make such a bizarre announcement is beyond me, but Harmonix sent out a note today, revealing that tracks from Grand Funk Railroad, the J. Geils Band, and yes, Manchester post-punk legends Joy Division will be coming to Rock Band 3 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii.

The game will be offering up the pre-New Order band’s best known track, “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” which is admittedly a lot less harsh than some of the band’s. The song will be available next week, so you’ve only got a few days to perfect your Ian Curtis dance.
