Yahoo App Search, AppSpot make sense of App Store and Android Market

It’s a common problem, really. You crack open your app haven of choice, stumble around for a few moments, and back out in frustration — it’s yet another round of Angry Birds instead of toying with something new. If Yahoo has its way, said scenario will no longer be a part of your routine, with the company’s App Search wizardry aiming to nix the guesswork so often associated with finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. It’ll be available on the PC (and momentarily, for iPhone and Android platforms), and will differ from those other app search alternatives by providing an all-in-one place that combines description, price, overall star rating from users, and screenshots. It’ll also pester you with daily, personalized recommendations of the iPhone and Android apps you should consider based on the apps you’ve downloaded, but only if you’re into that kind of thing. Head on past the break for the full spill, and feel free to Ctrl+F for the good stuff.

Microsoft, Facebook, RIM, and others write to the FCC in support of AT&T-Mobile merger

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has mail. It’s only a page and a paragraph long, but the letter he’s received this week has much gravitas attached to it, coming as it does from a select group of the tech industry’s biggest companies, all of whom are lending their support to AT&T’s proposed acquisition of T-Mobile. Of the eight new proponents of the deal, Microsoft, Facebook and Yahoo form a sub-group of software / web content distributors, whereas Qualcomm, RIM, Avaya, Brocade, and Oracle will have been motivated to speak up because they see the takeover as expanding opportunities to sell their mobile and networking hardware. The entire octet agrees that the melding of AT&T and T-Mobile’s networks into one is a requisite move for broadening mobile broadband availability in the US and for keeping the country competitive with the rest of the world. In their words, “an increasingly robust and efficient wireless network is part of a virtuous innovation cycle.” Virtuous for them, perhaps, but what about consumers faced with an increasingly binary choice of mobile carrier? Who shall protect their virtue?

Today’s World IPv6 Day: Google, Bing, Facebook and others test out new addresses for 24 hours

Described as a “test flight” of IPv6, today marks the biggest concerted effort by some of the web’s marquee players to turn us all on to the newer, fancier web addressing system. Internet Protocol version 4 has been the template by which we’ve addressed everything connected to the web so far, but that stuff’s now nearing exhaustion, so the future demands a longer, more complex nomenclature to tell our smartphones, tablets, printers, and other webOS devices apart. For end users, June 8th won’t really feel too different from June 7th — this will be a change that occurs mostly behind the scenes and there’s an IPv4 fallback option if you can’t connect in the modern way — but Google does warn that a very limited subset of users may experience connectivity issues as a result. Hit the links below to see how well prepared for the future you are.

Yahoo Travel Re-designs Site Just in Time for Summer

This article was written on May 12, 2007 by CyberNet.

Just in time for summer vacations, Yahoo Travel has introduced a re-design of their site, as well as some new personalization features and mapping tools. People are just starting to plan their vacations, and the new design and features should really help, especially the Flight Planner, but we’ll get into that below.

New features/ changes:

  • Personalized recommendations – not sure where to go? These recommendations come from user activity, and search history, and they’re displayed prominently on the page.
  • Yahoo Map Integration

The personalized recommendations are a great tool because there are multiple display options. You’ll notice a drop-down list with options like My Recommendations, Best Deals, Near Me, Beach, Family, Romantic, Art and Architecture, Hiking and Camping, and Nightlife. If you were trying to plan a hiking and camping trip and you wanted recommendations, this would give you ideas that you could look into. On Yahoo Travel, this section is labeled as “Today’s Picks for You.”

Yahootravelpicks

They’ve also done a great job integrating Yahoo Maps with the travel service. On the home page there’s a map of the World where you can select where you’d like to go. I selected Chicago, and from there it takes me to a page specifically for travel in Chicago.  They include a map with recommended places to visit like hotels, restaurants, and attractions.

Yahootravelmap

Another integration of maps are the detailed “re-maps” that layer maps on top of other maps. They take the typical map for an area, and then place another, more informative destination map on top so that you can plan your trip better (pictured below). It’s something that they’re testing out for now, and they say that new functionality with this feature will be coming soon. An example of a re-map is found when you search for Grand Canyon National Park. You’re in control of the layer opacity, and you can also view it in satellite mode.

Yahooremap

AnswersYahoo has always been good about integrating their services together, so you’ll notice that Flickr has been integrated into Yahoo Travel, as well as their “Answers” service where people ask questions and other people answer.  The questions they show are related to the destination you’re viewing.

Flight Planner

This feature will be especially useful if you’re planning a vacation with friends or other family members. It’s an optional plug-in which means you need to take the time to get it.  You must be using the desktop client for Yahoo Messenger to use this plug-in, but once you have it, you’ll be able to review and book flights with your family and friends in real time using messenger. I can’t think of an easier way to arrange flights than to do it in real-time over messenger while everybody is able to view and review flights.

So, if you’re planning a vacation for the summer, go check-out Yahoo Travel. It may seem over-whelming at first because there’s so many tools at your finger-tips, but in the end it will help you plan your perfect vacation.

Yahoo Nixed Mixd a Week Ago, no one Noticed!

This article was written on March 06, 2007 by CyberNet.

MixdYahoo has decided to ditch their mobile service pilot program called Mixd just a few months after it started.  It was geared towards the younger crowd, but apparently didn’t latch on like they expected.  In fact, the service ended over a week ago, yet no one noticed until yesterday.  That ought to say something right there.

According to the Mixd site, they say that they learned a lot, and that you can expect to see other great mobile products from Yahoo! in the future. Perhaps they’ll focus on a different demographic with future products?

Because it catered to the younger crowd who can text faster than a speeding bullet, it was a “trendy” way to create groups to text and share photos within.

Apparently the competition like Dodgeball and Twitter are one step ahead of the game and not worth competing with. Or maybe Yahoo has something bigger and better up its’ sleeve?

So far they haven’t had much luck with their mobile services, but it’s nice to see that they’re experimenting with their options. First the Yahoo ring-tones download service prematurely ended, and now Mixd has been nixed.

Yahoo upgrades its email for everyone, puts Facebook updates and tweets in your inbox

Yahoo is the latest in a line of would-be champions to try to topple king Gmail from its perch atop the email mountain. The company’s newest Mail Beta (no relation to Gmail Beta) was introduced last October, but now its overhauled UI and fresh features are available to all. With the change comes quicker load times, stronger spam filtration, and it lets you send and receive Facebook updates and tweets. It also automatically turns picture and video links into thumbnail previews and handles up to 100MB attachments. These fancy new features are certainly a step in the right direction (even if the purple paintjob isn’t), but time will tell if it’ll rule the webmail world.

Yahoo Messenger 9 Beta Includes Flickr/YouTube Integration

This article was written on May 30, 2008 by CyberNet.

yahoo messenger 9.jpgarrow Windows Windows only arrow
Yahoo Messenger 9 Beta has been in production for months, and yesterday it received and update that provides even more improvements and features. One of the things that really caught my attention in their demonstration video was the Flickr and YouTube integration, which automatically converts hyperlinks into embedded media. That way you can share and watch YouTube videos without ever leaving the chat window.

There are a significant number of other features that they include in this release as well. You can, for example, import contacts from other services such as Gmail and AOL, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to chat with your friends on all of those other networks. Here’s a more detailed list of features provided by the Yahoo Messenger blog:

  • Games are back! – Checkers, pool, toki toki boom…you know the rest. Note that your friend needs to be on 8.1 or this latest release of 9.0 Beta to play games with you.
  • Status message improvements – The status message menu has been split into two parts – one where you can indicate your availability (busy, available) and the other for putting in a custom message or a link you want to share.
  • Yahoo! Updates – Yahoo! Messenger is one of the first products to showcase what your friends are doing on Yahoo!. When a friend buzzes a favorite news story or changes their Avatar, a Yahoo! Update is displayed next to that friend in your contact list (with more detail in their contact card).
  • Import Contacts – Select “Import Contacts” from the Contacts menu and you can add friends from address books you have on other sites like Gmail, Orkut, Yahoo! Address Book, Hotmail, AOL and many more. We’ll pull in your contacts and make it easy for you to start talking with them on Yahoo! Messenger.
  • Voice in chat rooms for Vista users & faster Captcha process – We added a fix to this latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta that allows Windows Vista users on 9.0 to use voice in chat rooms (and conferences).
  • New IM notification toast – When a new message comes in to the background window, a small notification will pop up from the lower right corner of your screen with the beginning text of the IM your friend just sent.

If you’re still not convinced checkout the video below to see if the new Yahoo Messenger 9 Beta is what you’ve been longing for. Or if you’re using Vista be sure to try their uber sweet Vista Messenger.

Panasonic, Yahoo, more admit defeat, sign deal with Klausner

It’s easy to mock the little guy when he takes a handful of giant corporations to court. Such litigious overzealousness usually gets tangled up or tossed out altogether — Klausner Technologies, however, is laughing all the way to the bank, with a stellar track record taking on some of tech’s biggest names over the past few years. To date, the company has scored wins in visual voicemail patent battles with Apple, Google, Verizon, LG, and Vonage — the company also struck a deal with Sprint, though presumably with less teeth-pulling. This week, Klausner added four more big wins to the list, inking deals with Panasonic, Yahoo, Qwest Communications, and Avaya in the wake of suits against the tech firms. The company still has ongoing battles with RIM and Cisco that will hopefully stay civil. We’d hate to see someone send a visual voicemail they’d regret later.

Yahoo buys TV companion app developer IntoNow and its database of sounds

Earlier this year IntoNow launched its iPhone app that could identify what TV show you were watching by the audio Shazam-style and then share it with others over Facebook or Twitter, pull in additional information, or add the DVD to your Netflix queue. Now, Yahoo has purchased the company and according to the press release (after the break) wants to integrate its SoundPrint tech with its existing services including the Connected TV platform. As NewTeeVee suggests, this could tie-in nicely with its existing plans to use audio watermarks to identify advertisements and display additional info on screen or work with a companion app, both of which it demonstrated at CES. That database of sounds reportedly stretches back over five years and is continually being updated, which could give a major lift to Yahoo over other smart TV platforms that goes far beyond just check-ins and badges.
