Motorola CLIQ review

Palm and Motorola have taken very different paths to get where they are today; one began life as a scrappy Valley start-up founded by a tablet computing pioneer, the other traces its roots to all the way back to the early days of consumer electronics and the automotive industry. Yet somehow, through years (decades, even) of adventure, success, and misfortune, they’ve found themselves in exactly the same situation here in 2009: it’s do-or-die time. Palm, of course, has elected to try its hand at resurrecting the very thing that took it to superstardom in the first place — an elegant, tightly-controlled software platform of its own with hardware to match — while Motorola has thrown virtually all of its remaining weight behind Android in the hope that it can catch a little mojo from Google’s ecosystem.

For Motorola, it’s the wireless equivalent of stepping up to the roulette table, putting what’s left of your depleted life savings on red, and letting it ride just as you see security guards off in the distance coming to throw you — penniless — off the premises. It’s a gamble of the highest order, but it’s also a gamble Motorola’s painfully aware that it needs to take. North America’s only top-five handset manufacturer needs nothing less than magic (and a little luck) to earn its way back into the world’s wireless elite — and that risky play starts right here, today, with the CLIQ / DEXT.

So does the CLIQ pave the way to a New Motorola, or did the RAZR’s checkered legacy ultimately dig a hole too deep to escape? Read on.

Walt Mossberg leaks the BlackBerry Storm 2

Well, well, looks like Unkie Walt accidentally programmed his calendar to publish a combined preview of the Motorola CLIQ and the BlackBerry Storm 2 a little earlier than everyone else. Nothing particularly insightful on the CLIQ, but Mossy says RIM’s latest is a big improvement over the original Storm — mostly because of the revamped touchscreen, which provides “faster, smoother typing.” Yep, that’s pretty much what we were expecting. Walt’s also high on the inclusion of WiFi and the portrait-mode keyboard, but ain’t nothing gonna make that BlackBerry browser any good, and the big guy says the touch interface still feels tacked to the rapidly-aging BlackBerry OS. So Walt — now that you’ve confirmed RIM and Verizon’s big holiday launch, what can you tell us about pricing and availability? “Likely to appear in November at around $200,” you say? Thanks, buddy. You’re always so dependable. Video that we took of a broken Storm 2 prototype in May after the break, tons of pics in the gallery

Layar now adding layers of augmented reality to iPhone

Since your Android handset-owning friends and colleagues can’t have all the phone, Layar has finally made the leap to iPhone. It’s now available in the iTunes app store for the enticing price of nada, with its own third-party ecosystem to boot — only iPhone 3GS customers need apply, though, since without the magnetometer this is kind of a wash. We’ve only spent a few minutes with the new version, but it seems like much of our initial impressions from August seem to hold true, for better and for worse. But don’t take our word for it, download away! [Warning: iTunes link]

Dell’s 15.4-inch Vostro 1520 gets AT&T 3G option

The Round Rock powerhouse has definitely worked with the lads and ladies at AT&T before, but never before has the company’s bargain-priced Vostro 1520 been available with WWAN. Until today, of course. Starting right now, users interested in picking up the 15.4-inch rig can add an AT&T 3G module for $125, though you should know that Dell forces you to purchase the $109 NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GPU (256MB) upgrade alongside of it. If you’re down with a two-year DataConnect 5GB plan, the Vostro 1520 with AT&T 3G can be ordered up for as low as $633, and we’re also told that a slew of other Inspiron, Latitude, Precision and XPS devices should be receiving similar treatment in short order.

Stylophone Beatbox made interesting, desirable by superstar Brett Domino (video)

The $25.50 Stylophone Beatbox doesn’t look like much, and if it weren’t for one Brett Domino and his partner in hip-hop crime Steven Peavis, we just might have continued about our lives without knowing of this thing’s potential. Described as the ultimate street cred token for the average white boy, this diminutive box reacts to panel presses by dishing out the hottest beats this side of Compton. The result? An eclectic mix of melodic rap tunes, all beautifully re-rendered by Leeds’ most handsome, talented and skilled resident. Hit the video after the break if you know what’s good for ya, and feel free to fast forward to 1:33 before having your mind blown. Thug lyfe, y’all.

See that there? That’s a whole gaggle of 250GB Uncharted 2 PlayStation 3 Slim bundles ready and waiting for owners in a Spanish retailer. Of course, SCEA won’t mention if this thing is ever coming to US soil, but hey, that’s what importers are there for. Anyone managed to pick one up yet? Let us know in comments!

[Thanks, Alex]

CyberNotes: How to Put Microsoft Word to Work for You!

This article was written on March 31, 2008 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Microsoft Monday

Microsoft Word is such a powerful application that can do a lot for you and save you time! The key though is knowing how to put it to work for you. Today’s Microsoft Monday includes five tips that will help you make the most out of Microsoft Word. If you have a tip of your own, feel free to share…

Tip #1 – Automatically Create a Table of Contents

Did you know that you can automatically have Microsoft Word 2007 create a table of contents (TOC) for you? It’s actually very simple.  If you have written a paper and you’ll need a TOC, you’ll want to make sure that you are using Headings which are found under the Styles section on the “Home” tab. This helps Word distinguish what should be included in the TOC.

headings

Header 1 will be considered the highest level while Heading 2 will be the next highest level and Heading 3 is the following level in the TOC. Using these different headings will give you the hierarchical levels in your Table of Contents.

toc

Once your paper has been written and you’ve appropriately used the headings, just place your cursor where you’d like the TOC inserted. Then go up to the “References Tab” and under the “Table of Contents” section, select the design you’d like. Word will create a Table of Contents for you based upon the headings that you used, and will insert the proper page numbers. My example Table of Contents can be seen below.

Tip #2 – Random Text Generator

If you’re ever in a situation where you need some random text, Microsoft Word will generate paragraphs for you. You can either choose to have the random text be paragraphs about Microsoft Office, or you can also have the Lorem Ipsum “dummy text” inserted. You are able to choose how many paragraphs and how many sentences in each paragraph you’d like.

To generate random text about Microsoft Office, do the following.

Type =rand(2,4) and then press enter. This will generate two paragraphs with four sentences in each paragraph. If you wanted 3 paragraphs with 6 sentences each it would be =rand(3,6) and then press enter.

To generate Lorem Ipsum text, do the following:

Type =lorem(2,4) and then press enter. Like above, this will generate two paragraphs with four sentences of Lorem Ipsum text.

Tip #3 – Quickly Select a sentence or paragraph

Instead of using your mouse to select an entire sentence or paragraph, there’s a really simple way to do it in Microsoft Office.

Select a Sentence

To select a sentence, just hold down the Ctrl key and then click anywhere within the sentence and then it will be highlighted.

Select a Paragraph

Selecting a paragraph is just as easy. Hold down the Ctrl key and then click three times in rapid succession and the whole paragraph will be selected.

Tip #4 – Easily Single or Double-Space your Document

This is one of those tips that most people know by now, but if you don’t, here it is. By pressing ctrl+2, your document will be double-spaced. Pressing ctrl+1 will bring your document back to single-space. If you want your document spaced by 1.5, just press ctrl+5. Spacing your document is as simple as that!

Tip #5 – Use Word to Format and Correct Your Text

If there are certain words that you regularly type, you can use the AutoCorrect feature to let Word type the names or phrases that you use most. Click on the Office Button and then click “Word Options.” From there click on the Proofing tab in the left sidebar and then click “AutoCorrect Options…”

If you end up typing your name quite a bit, for example, you could create an abbreviation for it. Then anytime you typed that abbreviation, Word would replace it with the text that you selected for it. My example is that I type my name quite a bit so I chose to have Word replace the abbreviation “aw” with Ashley Wagner anytime it’s typed.

Acer fulfills prophecy, overtakes Dell as number two PC maker worldwide (update)

As if on cue, here’s some new data research firm Gartner lending credence to Lanci’s boasting. Looks like Acer has leapfrogged over Dell for the number two spot in global market share for the third quarter of 2009, from 12.5 to 15.4 percent of the Big Pie Chart[TM]. Meanwhile Dell is just below at 12.8 percent, and HP is sitting happily atop with a 19.9 percent ownership.

Update: Let us adjust our glasses a bit. According to the charts, Acer is number two in worldwide PC sales, not in US as this previously reported. Stateside, the company is sitting at number three at 13.9 percent, behind HP (25.7 percent) and Dell (26.2 percent). Apologies for the confusion, the person responsible for eyesight has been subsequently sacked, the person responsible for the sacking has been sacked, etc.

Xbox 360 Dashboard Update… updates: Preview program reopened, Sky TV due Oct. 27

Just as it did earlier this year, Microsoft has opened the preview program to let the most hardcore of Xbox 360 owners poke around the updated dashboard — presumably with access to all the 1080p instant-on streaming, Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm add-ons we’ve been expecting — ahead of its official release in order to shake out any remaining bugs. While worldwide console owners should scrape together console IDs, make & model of your TV, router and more in hopes of receiving an invite next week, a little more concrete news is in order for the UK, with the console launch of Sky TV nailed down for October 27. You’ll have to wait until then to find out exact pricing and channel line up availability, ’til then it’s a matter of finding out who on your friends list is most suited for the inevitable football viewing party.
