iOS 4 apps: the best of what’s new and updated (live updates!)

Although iOS 4 is out now with 1500 new APIs including multitasking support, your apps won’t support all those new features out of the gate — they’ll need to be updated to take full advantage of the iPhone’s new tricks. Happily, Apple started accepting iOS 4-ready apps last week, so there’s a handful of interesting apps already available, and we’re sure more are on the way. Here’s a quick list of what you can check out right now — we’ll be updating this as we go, so check back for more!

  • Dropbox: Everyone’s favorite file-syncing tool can now sync and complete uploads in the background, and also adds in support for fast app switching.
  • Evernote: the notes-in-the-cloud app adds support for fast app switching, and can continue to record audio notes in the background.
  • Pandora: Yes, you can finally play Pandora in the background — and the quick music controls on the left-most panel of the app switcher even control playback when it’s in the background. Nifty.
  • New York Times: Nothing major, but the Gray Lady supports fast app switching, so you can jump right back into an article without reloading.
  • ESPN ScoreCenter: Supports fast app switching, although you’ll still have to open it up for scores to refresh, since there’s no background updating API.
  • How to Cook Everything: Funny that a cookbook is one of the first iOS4 apps out there, but we’re Mark Bittman fans, so this is pretty cool — it supports fast app switching, so you don’t have to reload a recipe every time you close the app. Oh, and it’s got newer high-res art for the iPhone 4. Tasty.
  • Fandango: Now has fast app switching, so you can juggle other tasks while buying your movie tickets.
  • LinkedIn: Yep, LinkedIn’s iPhone app adds fast app switching to the mix.

So those are some highlights — we’ll keep updating as we go here, but most of the early iOS 4-ready apps are just adding fast app switching. We won’t lie, once you see it in action, you’ll wonder how you lived without it, but we’re still waiting to see developers get wild on those 1499 other new APIs — let us know what you’re seeing out there!

Update: We’re listing off more as we find them after the break — check it!

Update 2: “Tested for iOS4” doesn’t guarantee new features, but if you want to know which apps can make that claim, here’s a handy Google search. [Thanks, jihuiwen!]

pToday is the first day of summer, also known as the a href=”http://www.providingnews.com/first-day-of-summer-party-ideas.html”Summer Solstice/a, which also happens to be the longest day of the year, but everyone in the New York podcast studio this morning agrees that it’s just way too hot to be outside right now. /p

pIf you’re suffering, too, we recommend getting out of the sun to check out “a href=”http://movies.nytimes.com/2010/06/04/movies/04splice.html”Splice/a,” a new sci-fi horror movie featuring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley./p

pDirected by Vincenzo Natali of “a href=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube_(film)”Cube/a” fame, “Splice” tells the twisted story of two overzealous genetic scientists who set out to create a new breed of human using DNA from various animals./p

pA a href=”http://movies.nytimes.com/2010/06/04/movies/04splice.html”New York Times review/a of the movie makes comparisons with David Cronenberg’s 1986 film “a href=”http://movies.nytimes.com/gst/movies/titlelist.html?v_idlist=17924;17925;300451;454406;434618inline=nyt_ttl”The Fly/a,” but our special guest a href=”http://cnettv.cnet.com/404-412-where-we-celebrate-halloween-august/9742-1_53-50076170.html”Alli from Heavy and Flow/a sees the cautionary tale of genetic mutation as a combination of “Rosemary’s Baby” and the “Species” series–a href=”http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/splice/”you be the judge/a.

pWe’ve talked about the viral drinking game a href=”http://gawker.com/5544878/bros-icing-bros-the-drinking-trend-that-may-be-an-advertising-conspiracy”Bros Icing Bros/a on the show before, but Alli gets in the hot seat today to report news from the field, having spent the weekend in Montauk icing dudes left and right.
/pp
The actual Web site a href=”http://brosicingbros.com/”BrosIcingBros.com/a was recently taken down after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from Smirnoff, which a href=”http://adage.com/article?article_id=144493″officially denounced the game/a, but that won’t stop Alli from carrying around a case of the stuff to deflect any remaining players. /p

She also tells us that icing is gaining popularity at our own CNET offices, but apparently we’re too busy with a title=”A look at iPhone cash and exchange deals — Monday, Jun 21, 2010″ href=”http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20008110-260.html”iPhone news/a to get down on one knee and pound a Smirnoff./p

piPhones across the world are getting a big software upgrade today, as Apple just released a title=”Welcome, iOS 4 — Monday, Jun 21, 2010″ href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-20008255-233.html”version 4.0 of the iOS operating system/a that gives users a whole new bag of tricks including multitasking, iBooks, and custom wallpapers just to name a few. The upgrade will work with limited features on existing iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS models, but it’s really built for the iPhone 4, to be released this Thursday.
/pp
a href=”http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/25655/”Retailers are warning of shortages/a, and early reports tell us folks are a href=”http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/tech/2010/06/18/nr.iphone.4.camp.out.cnn”already standing in line to pick up their iPhone 4,/a so good luck!/p

E3 Rumor Scorecard: Which Ones Happened, Which Didnt

Nintendo3DSbehindglass.jpg

Before the Electronic Entertainment Expo started last week, I wrote a roundup of ten of the biggest rumors surrounding the show. Now that E3 is over, we know which of the rumors actually were fact. Here’s our scorecard.

  1. Nintendo 3DS: True. Nintendo’s new gaming portable was the company’s biggest hit of the show. We got a tiny bit of hands-on time with the 3DS, and from what we could tell, the hardware is everything we had hoped for. Nintendo has successfully ended all doubts surrounding its ability to created 3D effects without the need for glasses.
  2.  PSP 2: False. While Sony restated its commitment to the original PlayStation Portable (though any mention of the PSP Go was conspicuously absent), it didn’t announce any plans for a successor.
  3. Xbox 360 Slim: True. Microsoft exec Don Mattrick concluded Microsoft’s E3 press event with a neat little trick: He lifted up a fake Xbox 360 to reveal the company’s new slim model. It has built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi and a 250GB hard drive, all for $299.
  4. PlayStation 4: False. As expected, a big, old no on this one. Sony is far from the end of the PS3’s 10-year life cycle.
  5. Wii HD: False. Another long shot that didn’t happen. Nintendo fans will have to settle for some new Wii titles–and, oh yeah, that new handheld.
  6. New Versions of Nintendo Classics: True and False. New versions of Zelda (The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword) and Kirby (Kirby’s Epic Yarn) were announced for the Wii. F-Zero was nowhere to be seen. Starfox 64, meanwhile, will be making an appearance on the forthcoming Nintendo 3DS.
  7. New GoldenEye Game: True. Thirteen years after the release of the original, GoldenEye is coming to the Wii. The game will feature the likeness of current James Bond Daniel Craig, as well as Dame Judi Dench.
  8. Grand Theft Auto V: False. GTA fans will have to keep waiting for the latest addition to this popular series. Oh well, at least we have Red Dead Redemption.
  9. Half Life 2, Episode 3: False. More waiting on this one, as well.
  10. Star Wars Battlefront 3: False. We did get to see more of Star Wars: The Old Republic, if that’s any consolation.

Unlimited data option disappears from iPads, AT&T tells grandfathered customers not to worry

Even though AT&T’s $30 unlimited data plan technically went the way of the dodo back on June 7, the company had assured 3G iPad owners that they’d be entitled to one last hurrah — buy an iPad prior to the 7th and you’d be allowed to grandfather into the old plan, even if you didn’t receive your purchase by the deadline. Problem is, the unlimited plan option finally disappeared off AT&T-connected iPads for the first time today, leaving some of these eligible folks who haven’t yet signed up for 3G data in the lurch. Not to worry, though: AT&T says that everyone who’s eligible “will be able to select the unlimited plan” and that “details will follow.” In other words, we don’t know how this is going to work yet, but at least the carrier’s aware of the issue. Stay tuned.

Toshiba Dual Screen PC Folds Like a Book

Toshiba has announced a hybrid PC that’s not really a notebook but not exactly a tablet either.

Toshiba’s Libretto W100 has two 7-inch multi-touch displays, an Intel Pentium 1.2 GHz processor, a 62 GB solid state drive, a 1-megapixel camera and 2 GB of memory. It runs Windows 7 and weighs about 1.8 lbs — just a tad more than the Apple iPad’s 1.6 lbs.

The device is an “ultra-mobile concept PC,” says Toshiba, though it comes with a price tag of $1,100. That’s a lot of dough to spend for a concept.

Perhaps most interesting: Toshiba is promising to deliver e-reader software that will make the Libretto into an e-book reader, capable of showing full two-page spreads with one page on the left and one on the right — much like those paper books you might still have lying around.

Toshiba’s bet on a hybrid device comes at an unusual time, since the idea has so far failed to catch on with consumers. In March, Entourage released the eDGE, a quirky device with a 10-inch LCD screen on the right and a slightly smaller E Ink display on the left. The $500 machine didn’t bring out the best in either display. Earlier this month, California-based startup Kno promised a dual-screen tablet that would be designed for the optimal textbook reading experience. The Kno tablet is expected to launch later this year.

What the Libretto does have going for it is its extremely compact design and two gorgeous screens (1024 x 600 resolution on each one). The Libretto is among the smallest devices in its category. It measures 4.84 inches by 7.95 inches so you can slip it into a jacket pocket or a small purse.

The multitouch screens can work independently or together, so users can surf the Web on one screen while checking e-mail on the other, or view a web page across both screens. The lower screen can display a virtual keyboard (in any of several different layouts). There’s a single USB port. And the built-in accelerometer means the device automatically switches into portrait or landscape modes when rotated.

The Libretto W100 is expected to ship in August in Japan.
