iPhone 4 pre-orders now shipping

We’re still trying to puzzle out the mystery of why some iPhone 4 pre-orders have been randomly canceled, but there’s good news for the rest of the 600,000 people who managed to get past Apple’s ordering issues last week: the newest iPhone is now shipping. We haven’t gotten our ship notification email yet, but judging from our tip jar plenty of other people have — we’ll see if anyone’s lucky enough to score an early delivery.

KiFit tells you how many calories you’re not burning, other sad details of your unhealthy existence

Do we really need another gadget to tell us we’re fat and we sleep badly? Yes, we do. The KiFit armband’s packing some medically developed tech which measures your body temperature, how much you’re sweating, and how much you’re moving. From that info, it calculates your calorie burn rate and how peacefully you’re sleeping. If you’re like us, you’re undoubtedly already aware that your slumber is like a nightly replay of the “Enter Sandman” video, but still, it’s great to see gadgets that encourage a healthier lifestyle, right? The KiFit is available for $300 plus a $20 monthly subscription price — and while it’s a pretty neat little gizmo — we’d suggest you might be better off paying for a gym membership you’re never going to use.

Apple randomly canceling some iPhone pre-orders? Update: AT&T pre-orders too?

We haven’t verified exactly what’s going on here, but we’ve gotten several tips tonight from people who’ve received an iPhone 4 pre-order cancellation email from Apple saying that their order couldn’t be authorized. That sounds like an AT&T authorization problem to us, and given the the litany of problems that Apple and AT&T had all week dealing with the huge number of pre-orders, we can’t say we’re too surprised to hear that the chaos continues. Here’s the email:

Dear Customer,

We were unable to complete the authorization process for your iPhone order. As a result, we had to cancel your iPhone order. To complete the purchase of your iPhone, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an AT&T company-owned retail store.

We apologize for this inconvenience.

Sincerely,
Apple Online Store Team

Uh, yeah. We’re obviously looking into the situation, and we’ll let you know what we find out.

Update: We’re hearing that some people are getting cancellations from AT&T, as well — curiouser and curiouser.

NEC LifeTouch Android tablet isn’t exactly a beauty

Hey, they say beauty’s in the eye of the beholder, but we’re going to go out on a limb here and call this one like we see it: NEC‘s LifeTouch Android tablet isn’t a looker, in our opinion. That said, this 7-incher runs Android 2.1 and packs an ARM Cortex A8 processor. Although it’s scheduled for release in Japan in October, it turns out that it’ll be sold directly to businesses, so don’t hope to grab up one of these — unless you have the best employer ever, that is. Hey, at least it’s original looking. Video below.

Microsoft confirms: $199 new Xbox 360 coming soon, as well as Kinect bundles

Well, none of this will come as a big surprise here, but it’s always nice to hear it straight from an official source. Microsoft has confirmed that a $199 version of new Xbox 360 will be coming in the fall to replace the now-$149 Arcade, which is no longer in production. In addition, the company’s also spilled a few more beans — Kinect will be available as a bundle with the new Xbox 360, and though there isn’t any official pricing information on that one just yet, we’ve seen some telltale evidence on that front which would lead us to believe it’ll run somewhere in the neighborhood of $399 for an Elite and $299 for the Arcade. So now you know.

HTC EVO 4G sold out online once again

It’s happened before, and it’s happening again: the EVO 4G’s getting hard to find. We’re sure you’d be able to track it down locally, but the option that requires the least dreadful physical movement — ordering online — isn’t an option for now, with Sprint saying “this device is so hot we can’t keep it on our virtual shelves.” We imagine the situation will clear itself up shortly, but it makes you wonder — could the screen separation fix on the assembly line be the culprit behind the shortage?

[Thanks, James]

Entelligence: The aftermath of E3

Entelligence is a column by technology strategist and author Michael Gartenberg, a man whose desire for a delicious cup of coffee and a quality New York bagel is dwarfed only by his passion for tech. In these articles, he’ll explore where our industry is and where it’s going — on both micro and macro levels — with the unique wit and insight only he can provide.

Last week’s E3 show was pretty wild. All the major players upped their game quite a bit — pun intended. Here’s my breakdown of the show.

Microsoft:
The folks in Redmond led the way with an intro launch party featuring a custom performance from Cirque de Soleil. That was just to warm things up — when it came to actual announcements, Microsoft took a two-tiered approach. On one hand it’s building on the success of long established titles like Gears of War, Fable and of course, Halo. On the other it’s taking the time to re-boot the Xbox 360 with Kinect, which brings controller-free gaming to the platform, as well as adding voice and gesture controls. I think Kinect is a major leap forward in the gaming experience that will appeal to both mainstream and casual gamers. With a streamlined new Xbox 360 and an impressive set of launch titles debuting alongside, Kinect is more akin to a console launch than a peripheral. Overall, I’d say Microsoft is in the lead post-E3 and very well positioned for holiday.

3G video call on Fring for Android: bringing HTC EVO 4G and Dell Streak together (hands-on)

Consider this: you may have an Android phone with a front-facing camera, and so do your distant loved ones (yes, friends count too). Now slap that free IM app Fring onto your phone, and the once-dormant chat camera shall finally come to life — right now only the Streak and EVO 4G are supported, whereas the others (like the X10) will have to rely on their main cameras. Still, Fring also supports dual-camera Symbian devices plus Skype video calls to and from computers, and since it isn’t locked down to any particular connection method, users with unlimited data allowance get to make free 3G video calls! Take that, FaceTime. Read on to watch our very own transatlantic banter.
