Razer Tron Mouse leaves light trails in our hearts (video)

We don’t really expect that the actual Tron movie will be any good, but boy, its officially endorsed accessories aren’t looking half bad. The $100 laser mouse from Razer has snuck out for a quick pre-release video demo where we get to see it tracking gloriously on an accompanying “precision” mousepad. There’s hardly much to be learnt about the mouse’s ergonomics or 5600dpi accuracy, but it does glow with that mighty inviting shade of blue (cyan?) and the mousepad reacts to the laser’s illumination by leaving dreamy light trails after your movements. It’s cyber-poetry in motion, available after the break.

Mozilla’s Calendar, Sunbird Lightning, Continue to Progress

This article was written on January 18, 2007 by CyberNet.

Sunbird With all the hype focused on Firefox 3 and Thunderbird 2, we tend to forget about some of Mozilla’s other great applications. One of them is their calendar application that they offer in two different flavors: Sunbird is the standalone program that will only manage your calendar while Lightning is the Thunderbird add-on that provides both a calendar and email client in one convenient application. We have had the joys of tinkering with version 0.3 of both Sunbird and Lightning for over three months and a new release, version 0.5, is expected sometime this month.

The Calendar project continues to progress quite nicely and there are some new features underway. The first feature that the Calendar Weblog has talked about is the new Advanced Event Dialog which is pictured above. The goal of the dialog was to make it feel like an integrated part of Thunderbird while making Outlook users feel at home when using it.

Besides for that there are several “smaller” features that are being targeted for Calendar 0.5 and those can be found here. One thing that I did really want to point out was that they are working on improving the different Calendar views. To help out they have paid artistic designers millions and millions to draw some mockup images of what the calendar should look like…and here’s the result. Okay, so it’s ASCII art that was put together by the developers, but you still get the idea. :D The thing that seems to be the biggest problem right now with Lighting (the Thunderbird add-on) is getting the left sidebar to not appear so cluttered. They sum it up pretty well when they refer to the current solution and say ”The problem with that solution is that 70% of the visual information is placed on 30% of the screen.

The usability and integration of the Calendar is not quite there yet, but they are definitely taking steps in the right direction. We should see this next release sometime this month, but they seem pretty ambitious with what they want to get done for having less than two-weeks left. So don’t be surprised if the next release gets pushed back a little.

Thanks to “Jack of all Trades” for the tip!

HP Envy 15 and Envy 14 with Radiance display no longer available through HP, new CPUs ease the sting

Well, this is depressing. Earlier today we were tipped off on disappearance of the Envy 15 on HP’s site, and according to the company it’ll no longer be available through HP. Obviously, you can still snatch up the 15.6-inch version of HP’s magnesium alloy rig through other e-tailers, but there’s no telling how long they’ll be in stock. The vanishing of the Envy 15 happens to make a lot of sense with the introduction of the Envy 14, but there’s also something fishy going on with that one. The machine, which we do love so, doesn’t have an option to be configured with HP’s brighter Radiance panel any longer. HP wouldn’t comment on future plans, but did confirm that the Radiance panel is no longer available on the 14. We’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for further updates, but it’s on you to bring the tissues next time.

Though it’s little consolation for nature-loving outdoor laptop enthusiasts, there is a silver lining in this cloud — the Envy 14’s now showing a new set of powerful CPU options, up to and including that 2.66GHz Core i5-580M we’ve been lusting after for months.

[Thanks, Eric]

PlayOn finally gets its iPhone app approved, HTML5 lets out a sigh of resignation

We’re loving this new, slightly more liberal wave of App Store approvals (aren’t we easily pleased?), and it looks like PlayOn drew the lucky number today. After waiting in vain for an app approval, PlayOn actually developed a fairly sufficient HTML5 solution to its streaming-web-video-to-your-device problem, but there’s nothing quite like the sheen and polish of a bonafide app. Unfortunately, PlayOn’s desktop software, which is required to make this Netflix / Amazon / Hulu / ESPN / CBS / etc.-beaming possible, is still PC only.

[Thanks, Corey]

Xbox Live Fall 2010 Dashboard Update preview: ESPN, Netflix search, Kinect, and more! (Update)

Shortly before Kinect hits store shelves on November 4th, Microsoft plans on rolling out the Fall Update to Xbox Live — even sooner for those who signed up for the preview program. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, really: even without the numerous leaks, the fall update is a longstanding tradition for the almost five-year-old console, and the company devoted a large chunk of its E3 2010 presentation to talk about the biggest additions. That includes Netflix search (finally!), Zune music, and an entertainment hub for a certain worldwide sports broadcaster… ESPN. We’ve had a chance to spend some time at home with the Fall Update, follow us after the break for our full impressions!

Update: As both Joystiq and a number of tipsters have alerted us, Microsoft has pulled the large, wooden lever in its dark underground lair that allows for the Fall Update to trickle out and assimilate itself into the consoles of those smart enough to sign up for the preview program. If you receive a prompt upon signing in, rejoice! If not, well, have patience!

P.S. – Looking for more? Our BFFs at Joystiq have compiled a series of exhaustive videos chronicling the Fall Update. Check it out!

Confirmed: Droid 2 hack brings FM radio, in one ear and out the other

When we heard that the Motorola Droid 2 was the latest Android handset to nab the ancient magic of frequency modulated audio using Droid X files, we just had to give it a try, and sure enough, if you’ve got root, the FM Radio app can be yours with a quick download and just a few lines of code. Before you run off to void your warranty, however, you should know it’s got a fairly desirable feature missing — it only plays audio out of the right earphone. But hey, if we’re going old school, we might as well go all the way, right? Excuse us while we go listen to some glorious monoaural sound. Files and instructions at our source links, immediately below.

HTC Mondrian poses for press shots?

German site BestBoyZ has delivered a string of HTC leaks in recent weeks, and the latest is a fairly legit-looking handful of alleged press shots of the Mondrian. As a refresher, the Mondrian seems to be one of the many code and commercial names floating around for Windows Phone 7-based devices HTC is looking to ship at or very near to the platform’s retail launch, a higher-end unit (possibly equipped with a 1.3GHz Snapdragon) that would probably hang in the same space as the rumored HD7 and Trophy. Interestingly, the shots — which show a unit with a German ROM — have HTC Hub listed on the home screen, despite some recent talk by CEO Peter Chou that his company’s first-gen WinPho 7 products would lack serious software customization. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends on how much you appreciate HTC’s design team, we suppose.

Ask Giz: Scratched Records, Ass Tattoos, and Cellphone Fetishes [Askgiz]

Samsung Transform pictured in Sprint document, alongside Kyocera… err, Sanyo Zio?

Well, dear reader, we’ve got a pair of minor revelations for you, assuming this picture is real. First, that mid-range Android slatephone the Kyocera Zio is headed to Sprint, with the familiar Sanyo branding. Second, and perhaps more importantly, the elusive Samsung Transform has finally shown its face. Since that mug looks just like the Epic 4G, however, you can color us a bit confused — Sprint’s the only carrier without a keyboard-less Galaxy S, so that might make sense, but then why would they call it the Transform? As far as we can tell, it hasn’t been tested for WiMAX, so perhaps it’s an Epic without the 4G, plus a new form factor of some sort? Odds are we’ll find out soon, given the company it’s keeping: that BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 got shipped off to Sprint just this last week.

RIM took a few of us by surprise this week by announcing its first ever tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook. Donald Bell, our resident tablet expert, joins us to discuss it and what it means to the mobile industry. We also talk about Windows Phone 7, 4G LTE, and a weird Sony Ericsson accessory.
