Solar Powered, Waterproof Light Bulb For Developing Countries

Nokero N200.jpg

Nokero has unveiled its second generation light bulb, the aptly named N200, which is now available. Like its predecessor, the N200 is solar powered and water proof and designed as a way of reducing the need for kerosene fueled lighting in developing countries.

The bulb can be hung via an adjustable hanger so that it can always be in the best position for maximum solar absorption. The gathered solar energy is then transfered from the solar panel located on top and used to power a rechargable, replaceable battery inside. It also features three different settings: on, off, and turbo-task. While operating in regular on mode, the N200 can last around six hours on one day’s charge. When you brighten things up for turbo-task, that number shrinks to about two and a half hours.

As for life, Nokero says that the rechargable battery has a lifespan of two years, and could last as long as five years after that, with a new battery of course. In order to make the N200 a financially viable option for people in developing countries, Nokero is hoping to sell them for $15 or less.

Attachmate Acquires Novell for $2.2 Billion

novell_logo.jpg

Christmas is coming early over at the Attachmate Corporation. The IT company is set to acquire Novell for a cool $6.10 per share–an amount that works out to roughly $2.2 billion. The amount is nine percent higher than the stock price the company carried when the market closed on Friday.

Novell is also set to sell intellectual property to the technology consortium CPTN Holdings for $450 million. The group is headed by Microsoft. According to TechCrunch, the “payment is reflected in the merger consideration to be paid by Attachmate Corporation.”

Attachmate, interesting, seems to have less brandname recognition than Novell in the IT world. Quoting TechCrunch again,

The company primarily focuses on terminal emulation, legacy modernization, managed file transfer, and enterprise fraud management software. It is the largest privately-held software company in Washington, USA.

The company’s CEO Jeffrey Hawn was sentenced to 10 days in jail for animal cruelty for slaughtering 32 of his neighbor’s bison, after they ended up on his land.

The transactions are expected to close in the first quarter of next year, assume both companies’ bison stay in line.

New Volvo Concept Runs On Air

Volvo Air Motion Concept.jpg

We’ve seen cars that run on human power, solar power, biofuels, and more, but a new concept unveiled by Volvo at the Los Angeles Auto Show reveals a car that runs on nothing more than thin air.

Dubbed the Air Motion Concept, the car is powered entirely by compressed air, which is stored in a tank. And for a car that runs on air, it shouldn’t be surprising that the vehicle is very light. The Air Motion Concept features a carbon fiber body and weighs less than 1,000 pounds. It also runs on a pneumatic motor that is much simpler than a traditional combustion engine.

As for how you refill a gas tank full of air, Volvo predicts that we’ll one day have wind powered stations where you can top up your car’s fuel.

The Air Motion Concept is just one of many entrants in the LA Auto Show’s design challenge, which also features unique designs like a Mercedes that’s literally grown from a seed and a Smart car knit together by robots.

Searching for a specific image on the Internet can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Some sites, such as Google Image search, try to make the process easier, but shuffling through one page after another of results can quickly get tedious.

That’s where the free desktop application called Ginipic comes into play. You can view hundreds of results at a time, and inserting an image into an app like PowerPoint is as easy as dragging-and-dropping it. To see how easy it really is checkout their video tour.

Here are some other features that make Ginipic worth it:

  • Multiple Sources – You can choose to search your favorite search engine or photo-sharing site (Flickr, Google, Yahoo!, SmugMug, deviantArt, Picasa, Photobucket, Facebook, and more), or expand your search to unlimited results with a click of a button, with our tailored “All Sources” option.
  • No Duplicates – Did you know that, on average, “big search engines not be named” give you 200 duplicates for every 1,000 results? Not with ginipic.
  • Incredible Variety – Ginipic gives you the power of the web to find ANY picture in ANY category with NO restrictions.
  • Advanced Search – Advanced search gives you the ability to customize your queries in each source – just as you would on their site.
  • Resizing – Choose your own preview size for the best possible experience! Maximize to enjoy the picture in all its glory, work small if you’re just browsing away.
  • Tagging – Tag your pictures away and see them all in a heartbeat by choosing your tag in the comfortable Favorites source. Not a tag person? Just favorite the picture and you’ll still have a super easy access to it.
  • Drag & Drop – Drag & Drop functionality gives you the ability to start working immediately – you see something you like, just drag it in your work space and continue working.
  • Save Images Locally – Want to backup or save it for later? No need in clumsy “right click, save as, too hard to understand what’s going on” options – just save the picture right from the preview window when you’re satisfied.
  • Set as Wallpaper – Do you feel like changing your background? Just hit the “Set as wallpaper” on any picture and instantly your desktop will change and renew before your eyes.

This is definitely a slick app, and truly handy for those heavy images searchers out there. Give it a whirl and let us know what you think.

ground_zero.jpg

Sharp Electronics today announced that it has been chosen to provide a “countdown clock” from the upcoming 9/11 Memorial and Museum set to open at the World Trade Center site on September 11, 2011–the tenth anniversary of the attacks.

The company’s CEO Kozo Takahashi will join the museum’s president Joe Daniels and New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg for tomorrow morning’s unveiling at the 9/11 Memorial preview site.

The clock will be embedded into a 13 by seven foot video wall made up of nine Sharp LCDs, which will both count down the time until the memorial opens and feature renderings of what the site will look like finished.
