CyberNotes: Netvibes Saves You Some Time

This article was written on October 17, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Time Saving Tuesday

I used to be a user of Google Personalized Homepage quite religiously because of the extensive list of modules that they have available but I recently decided to make the switch to Netvibes. I didn’t think it would be that easy because there were some “Google only” modules that I thought I would miss, such as the one for Google Reader and the one for Google Calendar.

I made the switch about a month ago when Google released the tabs feature for the Personalized Homepage. Yeah, it is a little ironic that Google releases a cool new feature and that is what made me switch to Netvibes. Primarily I changed because I heard so often that Netvibes was better, but I had not given it a fair shot yet. On top of that Netvibes released some stats that said they have over 5 million users…which definitely shows that they are doing something right.

Like most people who start using Netvibes you will find a majority of the best modules  located in the “Add Content” sidebar. Besides for modules they also have some of the most popular feeds in the Feed Directory, and CyberNet happens to be located in the Internet – Web 2.0 -> Web 2.0 directory. :)

Here is a quick overview of the actual modules that I chose from the sidebar:

  • Weather
    Netvibes Module
  • Webnote
    Netvibes Module

  • To Do List
    Netvibes Module
  • Calendar (I use the iCal address from my Google Calendars)
    Netvibes Module
  • Blog Search
    Netvibes Module
  • Web Search
    Netvibes Module
  • Video Search
    Netvibes Module
  • GMail
    Netvibes Module
  • Meebo
    Netvibes Module

One of the most useful features in Netvibes is probably the built-in feed reader. After you add a feed it will look just like the one that your Google Homepage has except when you click on a title you will receive a full-screen view of the articles from that site:

Netvibes Feed Reader

The last thing that I wanted to cover was making your own modules. Maybe you won’t be able to find something that does exactly what you are looking for but if you have a little programming skill then you can probably make your own module without any troubles. Even I created a module that will retrieve your FeedBurner feed subscriber numbers for the current day and the previous day. It utilizes a feature that FeedBurner offers and as long as a site makes their numbers publicly available you can track them, there are no usernames or passwords needed:

Netvibes Feedburner

Note: My Feedburner module is now available at Netvibes.

I think you would probably be surprised at how may sites use FeedBurner. Slashdot and Gizmodo both use FeedBurner but they pay extra in order to have “their own” feed URL instead of one that obviously points to FeedBurner. Unfortunately they have blocked people from viewing the number of subscribers but there are several sites that it still works for such as GigaOm. They don’t publish the number of subscribers on their site but using this method you can see that they have around 35,000.

Overall, I have to admit that I am much more impressed with Netvibes than I was with Google Personalized Homepage. It has a lot more to offer and they are consistent about adding new and useful things. Netvibes is going to be a keeper for me and I would like to thank to everyone who recommended that I try it!

Google acquires speech synthesis outfit Phonetic Arts, plans to use Jack Donaghy’s voice for everything

Don’t ever knock Google for not reinvesting a little of that cheddar it’s stacking in Mountain View. Barely two months after pulling the trigger on BlindType, El Goog has now sunk an undisclosed amount of money into Phonetic Arts, described as a speech synthesis company based in Cambridge, England. Naturally, Google’s been toiling around the clock in an effort to better its speech technologies, and it looks as if it could be cutting out quite a few months (or years) of work with this one purchase. Phonetic Arts was known for being on the “cutting edge of speech synthesis, delivering technology that generates natural computer speech from small samples of recorded voice,” and we get the impression that the team will be given clearance badges to enter Google’s London-based engineering facility shortly. The company’s own Mike Cohen is hoping that this will help us “move a little faster towards that Star Trek future” — frankly, we’re hoping to have Jack Donaghy’s voice become the de facto standard in under a year. We hear some dudes at 30 Rock are already toying with a prototype…

Visualized: Tron Armchair redefines furniture art

If you haven’t noticed already, Disney (and the rest of the world, seemingly) is going all-out for this year’s rendition of Tron. What’s potentially better than a cinematical remake? You’re looking at it. The Tron Armchair was dreamed up and designed by New York’s own Dror Benshetrit, with the seating apparatus officially debuting this week at Design Miami / Art Basel. There’s a whole slew of motifs to peek down there in the source link, all of which make “impregnated fiberglass and polyester resin” look about as good as they can. It’s a crying shame that no price tag accompanies them, but hopefully that’ll change soon. Really soon.

Microsoft Office 2007 Gets A Small Facelift

Microsoft Office 2007 Gets A Small Facelift

It looks like Microsoft has updated their Office 2007 information site with some new screenshots. They appear to have made everything a little more streamlined and slightly more graphics oriented.

I have been using the Microsoft Office 12 (now Office 2007) for months now and I am very amazed at how well this beta performs. The only thing that does not work to its full potential is when you try to create certain charts in Excel. The charts may be generated properly but it is extremely difficult to adjust the properties (such as the axis interval).

At any rate, Microsoft Office 2007 is going to be as amazing as the release of Windows Vista. Both of these new releases by Microsoft will take some time to get use to but it is actually enjoyable playing around with them.

Mad Catz ships Rock Band 3 MIDI Pro adapter, gives your keyboard and drum set new life

Talk about just in time. With merely weeks to go before Mr. Claus makes his wintry journey ’round the globe, Mad Catz has decided to finally ship a peripheral that was introduced way back in June. Without a doubt, the MIDI Pro adapter is one of the more intriguing music game accessories to hit the open market, enabling Rock Band 3 owners to use most MIDI keyboards and drum sets with the title. The box is shipping as we speak for Sony’s PS3 and Nintendo’s Wii, and the Xbox 360 variant should be headed to Best Buy in the coming hours. If you’ll recall, this guy’s also designed to work with the forthcoming Rock Band 3 Squier guitar / controller, and it even features a velocity sensitive adjustment for MIDI drums designed to reduce cross-talk during play. At $39.99, it’s a no-brainer for those who already own a MIDI instrument or two, but we just might be more excited about the hacking possibilities than anything else. DIYers, get at it!

Some of the Best Views from Google’s Street View

This article was written on June 02, 2007 by CyberNet.

This week Google introduced their Street View which gives users the chance to see streets in a 360 degree view. While it’s pretty cool, there are some privacy issues associated with it.  It didn’t take long for people to compile a bunch of “best of” photo lists all around the web that include some interesting sightings.

Below you’ll find an image of the vehicle that was used to take some of the street view images. It was a little Volkswagen Beetle with a disco ball looking camera mounted to the top.

Corsair Force series gets 90GB and 180GB brothers, middle child syndrome inevitable

Corsair has added new 90GB and 180GB sizes to its blazin’ fast Force Series of SSDs, growing the happy family which already included 60, 120, and 240GB versions in addition to the original 100GB and 200GB options released back in the spring. Unlike its previous siblings, both the F90 and F180 are also available immediately from Corsair dealers for suggested MSRPs of $255 and $430, respectively. This one is for all of the music junkies out there! MediaMonkey is very much renowned for being the best media manager available. It’s been downloaded a staggering 2.6 million times from Download.com, received 5 out of 5 stars from the Download.com editors, and has earned 4 out of 5 stars from over 600 users who have voted. If that’s not a recipe for a great application I don’t know what is.

If you’ve been following our Daily Downloads you’ll know that MediaMonkey is on the verge of releasing version 3 (note: all screenshots in this article are taken from MediaMonkey 3 RC3). This release is anticipated by all MediaMonkey users because of the new built-in podcast management, improved Vista compatibility, better search features, and much more. Yep, I said podcast support:

And what good would a media manager be if it didn’t support synchronization with portable media players? With MediaMonkey you not only get full iPod support, but it can also handle most other media players as well. That means you can toss in the towel on iTunes without sacrificing the functionality that you crave!

MediaMonkey has a plethora of options for all of the power users out there who have to have things their own way! You can configure everything from dozens of keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys, plug-ins, automatic podcast downloading, CD ripping, and more:

  • Advanced Auto-Playlists quickly generate a mix to suit your mood. Specify the criteria, and the mix is created.
  • Sleep Timer gradually fades your music over a set period of time, and optionally turns off your PC before bedtime.
  • Virtual CD catalogs your CD’s without creating duplicate entries for tracks that exist on both your hard drive and CD’s.
  • Burn CD’s and DVD’s at full speed.

How would you change Roku’s XDS media streamer?

2010 may arguably be the year of the tablet, but darn if media streamers aren’t breathing down their neck. This year, we’ve seen an explosion in the quantity and quality of media streamer options, with even the mighty Google buying in via its Google TV solution. One of the earlier birds, Roku, decided to dole out an updated box just a few months ago, and now it’s competing against the Apple TV, a few WD TV Live units, D-Link’s Boxee Box and scores of integrated options within HDTVs. At $99, there’s an awful lot of choices on the market, but we’re curious to know how XDS early adopters would tweak and / or overhaul things if given the golden opportunity. Would you change the exterior at all? How about the user interface? Add any content partners? How’s the remote control situation treating you? Think of comments below like you would an AA meeting — speak your heart and wait for nods. We’re all one in this brainstorming bubble.

WikiLeaks Defended By Ron Paul

ronpaul.jpeg

Whatever you might of think of Ron Paul’s take on the issues, there’s something to be said for taking a stand, no matter how politically unpopular it might be. Certainly no one can accuse the man of kowtowing to political pressure.

The Texas congressman today sent out a note to his nearly 20,000 Twitter followers, defending whistleblowing site Wikileaks in the wake of overwhelming political criticism at its release of thousands of classified government documents. Paul wrote,

Re: Wikileaks- In a free society, we are supposed to know the truth. In a society where truth becomes treason, we are in big trouble.

Well, you sir can consider yourself uninvited from any and all future Palin family pool parties.
