Leviton announces Evr-Green 120 portable EV charger, pledges no unsightly shedding of leaves

Leviton announces Evr-Green 120 portable EV charger, pledges no unsightly shedding of leaves

Lack of public EV charging stations got you down? Range anxiety a frustrating part of life? Wouldn’t life be grand if you could just carry around an outlet in your trunk? Smile, friend, because Leviton‘s got just the bit your boot’s been looking for. It’s the Evr-Green 120 Level 1 Portable Charger, able to be plugged into any 15- or 20-amp household outlet before the other end goes into your car’s receptacle. Level 1 chargers are not the fastest, often taking 20 or more hours to put a full charge into big batteries, but if you just need to top-up and do it on the go this could be a great solution. It’s also one of the first truly portable chargers we’ve seen. The Best Buy charger for the Focus Electric (which is also from Leviton) is technically portable, but it’s obviously meant for bolting to the wall. This one looks to fit neatly in the trunk right next to all your hockey gear, though the ice might well be thawed before this releases — Leviton is only pledging a rather vague “2011” for availability.

GoDaddy CEO Kills Elephant, Video Tapes it, Adds AC/DC Soundtrack

godaddy elephant.jpg

In 1903, Thomas Edison electrocuted an elephant and filmed it, distributing as a cautionary tale about the perceived dangers alternating current (AC), the direct competitor to his direct current (DC). More than a century later, our technologies for capturing footage have certainly improved, but the whole elephant killing thing is still firmly intact.

Bob Parsons is carrying the Edison mantle. The GoDaddy CEO went on a vacation to Africa, shot an elephant with a high-powered rifle, captured the whole thing on video, added a soundtrack by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, and then uploaded it for the whole world to see. Also worth mentioning is the scene in which locals strip the flesh from the pachyderm, while wearing orange GoDaddy baseball caps.
PETA, naturally, is pretty upset about the whole thing, leading boycotting campaign against the domain service. Parsons claims that he shot the elephant to stop it from destroying the locals’ crops. PETA, meanwhile, and others insist that there are ways to address the problem that don’t involve a high-powered rifle.
Video after the jump, but fair warning: it’s graphic.

Xperia Play meets shipping delays in UK, Vodafone and Three bump launch to next week

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play isn’t having the best of starts in the world, having been delayed by UK carrier O2 due to “software issues,” and it’s now missing its targeted launch date of April 1st with two more of the local operators, Vodafone and Three. Both have today announced that, due to shipping issues, they won’t be able to meet tomorrow’s launch date — leaving only Orange on track to release it on time. T-Mobile, Orange’s partner in Everything Everywhere, says it’ll have the Xperia Play in “mid-April.” Still, the wait isn’t that much longer as Three hopes to sell you a Play “early next week” and Vodafone, a bit more cautiously, is shooting for availability “as soon as possible.”

Obama says federal fleet to run on alternative fuels starting in 2015

Chances are the Secret Service won’t be ditching its signature black SUVs for these things anytime soon, but if all goes according to President Obama’s new energy plan, even the Commander in Chief’s armed guards will be rolling more eco-friendly in the next three years. In a speech given at Georgetown University Wednesday, the President said he expects all government agencies “to purchase 100 percent alternative fuel, hybrid, or electric vehicles by 2015.” Now, that doesn’t mean they’ll have to get rid of pre-existing gas guzzlers, but any new purchases made after the cutoff date will be expected to comply — the government’s current fleet consists of 660,000 vehicles, 400,000 of which run on gasoline. Among other things, the President also called for increased infrastructure for the production of biofuels made from things like wood chips and switchgrass. So no, Cadillac One probably won’t be replaced by a rechargeable egg car, but if Uncle Sam’s taking suggestions, we’d be happy to make a recommendation — Wheego Whip LiFe One does have a nice ring to it. Doesn’t it?

The Windows Phone 7 Number That Matters: One Billion

Thumbnail image for HTC HD7 with Windows Phone 7.jpg

IDC issued a reportedly recently, predicted that, by 2015, Windows Phone will be the world’s second most popular mobile operating system, trailing only Google’s Android. Most of us in the industry were a bit baffled by the news, of course, largely citing Windows Phone 7’s lukewarm sales figures as the basis for disbelief.

Last night, perhaps not coincidentally, Windows Phone senior director Brandon Wilson wrote a post for The Windows Phone Developer Blog titled “A Year Later–The Windows Phone 7 Numbers That Matter.” According to Wilson, “When considering the various measures of progress over the last year, we tend to focus on the third party developers who have built so many amazing apps and games for the platform.”
He goes on to cite the number of times that Windows Phone Developer Tools has been downloaded (1.5 million), the number of members of AppHub who are also members of the Windows Phone developer community (36,000), and the number of apps available for the platform (11,500). For that latter number, Wilson insists, “we have always been focused on quality over quantity.”
But really, there’s one number that will determine Windows Phone 7’s success above all others: one billion. That’s the amount, in dollars, that Microsoft reportedly paid to ensure that Windows Phone 7 will be implemented on the next generation of Nokia handsets. Nokia, while not exactly a powerhouse in the US, is still the biggest manufacturer of smartphones in the world. If anything is going to determine Microsoft’s success in the mobile space, it’s that.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer shows up at Best Buy for $400 (update: dock price)

Never mind the cringe-inducing advertising, ASUS has given us a much better reason to care about its Tegra 2-toting Eee Pad Transformer: a $400 price. The 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet (with 1280 x 800 resolution on an IPS display) has quickly moved from its Taiwanese release, through yesterday’s UK pricing announcement, to today showing up at Best Buy in the US, so we suspect its global shipping can’t be far off at all. With a sticker that’s a clear $99 less than the cheapest iPad and a good deal more affordable than its Android competition like the Xoom and G-Slate, the Transformer could yet take the tablet world by storm. Do take note that the keyboard dock that inspires this slate’s name is an optional extra, but given the starting price, the whole package might still end up less than what others will ask.

Update: Whack attack! Best Buy has pulled the Transformer page and it no longer shows up in search results on the site. Was the price too good to be true? Thanks, Jaime!

Update 2: It’s looking likely that the price info was accurate, as 16GB and 32GB versions have shown up elsewhere on the web for $400 and $500, respectively, though both are currently out of stock. Thanks, Sam and James!

Update 3: Ah, and now we have the price for the dock alone: $149. Thanks, Peter C.!

HTC invites us to ‘see what’s next’ on April 12th

Would you look at what dropped in our inbox this morning? Good old HTC is cooking up a little somethin’ somethin’ for an April 12th launch in London town, for an event kicking off at 1.30PM BST or 8.30AM EST. While consulting our solar calendars, we noticed that’s when Microsoft’s MIX 2011 developer gathering is also getting started, but we’re sure it’s just a coincidence and HTC isn’t about to spring a battery of new Windows Phone 7 devices on us. In fact, if you stare at the invite’s image long enough, you might just convince yourself you’re looking at a bulging smartphone screen, which could indicate we’re talking about the EVO 3D‘s European launch. You never know with these things. Whatever happens, we’d advise circling the date and making sure your popcorn supplies aren’t running low.

At Least They’re Cute: eCAFÉ Netbooks Launched to Dead Market

Hercules’ eCAFÉ netbooks are pretty cool for a dead product category

Hercules has released a pair of ARM Cortex A8-based netbooks which run a Linux OS and last up to 13 hours on a single charge. But the coolest part is that they look like an oversized Nintendo DS.

There are two models, the eCAFÉ Slim HD and the eCAFÉ EX HD. The difference is in the battery. While the Slim is just 0.8 inches thick, the EX is a 1.1 inch slab. Both have 512MB RAM, 8GB flash storage (and an SD slot for adding more), a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 display which it is claimed can somehow offer proper 720p video playback (maybe the extra 120 lines of pixels pop out from somewhere?) and a Linux-based OS.

But it’s the style that sets these apart from other netbooks. Both eCAFÉs are wonderfully squared-off, without that awful fat wedge-shape of most netbooks. And when the screen opens, it leaves a little of its bezel behind, making two bars, one either side of the chiclet keyboard. Like I said, it look like a flatter, bigger Nintendo DS.

Thankfully, both machines are cheap, at €200 ($283) for the Slim and €250 ($354) for the EX. I had thought that the netbook market was completely dead thanks to the tablet, but at these prices somebody, somewhere might buy one instead of an iPad.

Hercules Sets a New Standard with its Latest Generation of eCAFÉ Netbooks [Hercules. Thanks, Jennifer!]
