Samsung pushes Galaxy S II launch event back a day due to Hurricane Irene

It looks like you’ll have to wait an extra day to learn what you already know: the Galaxy S II — aka, the Attain, Hercules and Epic 4G Touch — is about to launch on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. Samsung’s pushed Monday’s New York press event back a day due to that little east coast storm you may have read something about. Fortunately, these handsets haven’t exactly kept a low profile, so we weren’t expecting too many surprises anyway. We’ll be there covering it live, but in the meantime, stay safe and if you’re a Verizon customer, you might want to find a dry place to continue your seething.

Canon and Microsoft Team for “Top 100 Photo Contest”

This article was written on May 27, 2008 by CyberNet.

microsoft contest.png

Canon and Microsoft have teamed up for what they’re calling the “Top 100 Photo Contest.” They’re offering a grand prize package worth $10,000, but they’re also offering other prizes including a 1st place prize and people’s choice awards. Knowing that many of you are interested in photography and you come from all over the World, we thought some of you would be able to take some pretty cool photos and might have a shot at winning.

Microsoft managed to incorporate Microsoft Virtual Earth into this by using it to point out their “100 ultimate photo locations around the globe.” They’ve divided the globe into regions which you can click on to view the locations, and then learn about different destinations. To enter the contest, you’ll need to take a photo that keeps with the “general theme” of the Top 100 Iconic Photo Locations around the World. They say this would include photos of historical locations, landscape and travel.

So what happens if you manage to take home the Grand Prize Package? Well, you’ll get $1,000 in cash, your photo will appear in the November 2008 issue of PCPhoto, you’ll get a pretty cool Canon 5D D-SLR Camera, Windows Vista Ultimate, Office 2007 Professional and Expression Media, and several other things. The main prize of the First Place package is a black and white filter, a tripod, Spyder3Studio from Datacolor and an Aero 80 bag from Tamrac. There are also People’s Choice awards which includes the Spyder3Studio software, an Aero 80 bag as well as a 16×20 print of the wining photo.

The only limitations for entering is that you must be 18 years or older, and live in the 50 United States or District of Columbia. You can submit up to three photos.

BeBook Club ‘S’ boosts speed, contrast, leaves off nothing for savings

BeBook Club S

The respectable, if not exactly mind-blowing, BeBook Club e-reader is getting an update and adding an “S.” So, what exactly does the BeBook Club ‘S’ bring to the party? Well, one of them fancy Pearl e-ink screens for starters, but also storage (it now sports 1GB of internal flash) and speed (it’s got a beefy new 800MHz CPU). The design remains the same, but we’re hoping the price doesn’t. At $179 the original BeBook Club was always a tough sell, and with the price of the Kindle and Nook tumbling fast the ‘S’ here better also stand for savings.

MOTOFONE F3, the zombie apocalypse survival phone (video)

You can never be too prepared. Whether you’re being chased by brain sucking zombies, hunted down by ruthless killer robots, or — more likely — the victim of an earthquake or other natural disaster. There’s only one phone you really need, and that’s the MOTOFONE F3. Forget your smartphone and its fancy pants features, forget the internet — when the apocalypse strikes your survival might depend on a durable handset with great battery life and just the basics, which is exactly what the MOTOFONE F3 delivers. Introduced in 2006 for developing markets, it makes and takes calls, sends and receives text messages, beeps and vibrates, stores and recalls your most important contacts, and includes an alarm clock — that’s it.

Of course, these specs describe almost every simple phone launched since SMS was added to the GSM standard. What makes the MOTOFONE F3 unique is that it uses a segmented e-paper display which sips power and remains legible in both direct sunlight and dark back alleys, along with dual antennae for superior radio performance. Battery life is absolutely incredible, with over 2 weeks in standby and several months powered off. Motorola also designed the handset to be light (68g), thin (9mm) and strong — it’s resistant to shock, dust and moisture, with a sealed keypad and speaker (which is extremely loud). The best part? You can pick one up online, unlocked, for as little as $25.

Check out our gallery below, and whatever you do, don’t be like our protagonist in the zombie apocalypse video after the break — don’t leave your SIM at home.

Psst… yeah, we know this phone’s ancient, but every now and then we like to reach back and have a little fun. And, you know, escape a looming zombie horde.

WrapUp: Windows 7 Release Date, FeedDemon Supports Google Reader, and More

This article was written on May 04, 2009 by CyberNet.

Welcome to the WrapUp by CyberNet. This is a collection of news stories, downloads, and tips that we have collected over the last few days, but never got around to writing about. Don’t forget to send in your own tips, or just leave a comment on this page if you think you’ve got something we should include.

–News–

windows 7 october.jpgWindows 7 Coming October 23rd?
Acer has confirmed that Windows 7 will be released on October 23rd, and that anyone who purchases a computer 30-days prior to that will be eligible for Microsoft’s free upgrade program. Now you have an idea how long you have to wait if you want to get Windows 7 for free with a new computer purchase.

gmail google search.jpgGoogle Search Results in Gmail
The Gmail team has thought up a really handy Labs feature that lets you retrieve Google search results without needing to leave the comfort of your Inbox. It’s so well designed that they actually make it super easy to insert into an email only the URL from one of the results if you want. I’ll be making good use of this.

android.jpgAndroid 1.5 Pushed to Some Users
T-Mobile has started pushing out the Android 1.5 update to existing G1 owners. It’s more of a slow rollout from what I’ve read around the web, so it may take a little while for everyone to get their hands on it.

vista sp2 logo.jpgVista SP2 Goes RTM
Microsoft has announced that Vista SP2 has been sent to manufacturing, and that they are targeting a Q2 2009 date for public availability. SP2 offers faster searching, native Blu-ray recording support, a Bluetooth update, and more.

google docs themes.jpg70 Themes for Google Docs Forms
Have you used the Google Docs forms capability yet? If not this might be enough to make you consider it. They now let you choose from over 70 themes to make your forms/surveys look a little more professional.

feeddemon google reader.jpgFeedDemon Supports Google Reader Synchronization
A Beta version of FeedDemon 3.0 is showing off an awesome new feature. It is now capable of syncing your feeds with Google Reader, one of Newsgator’s online competitors. I’m a bit surprised that they’ve chosen to go this route, and hopefully they’ll add similar functionality to the rest of their products.

–Tips, Tutorials, and Reviews–

gmail compactor.jpgShrink Gmail Navigation with Greasemonkey Script
This nifty little Greasemonkey script will let you condense down the Gmail side navigation to only two rows of icons, which gives more room for other sidebar items. Hopefully Google will add something like this to their Labs because it can be really handy for someone with a netbook that has a small screen.

windows 7.jpgWindows 7 Benchmarks
Now that Windows 7 has hit RC1 status Gizmodo has decided to compare the performance between Windows 7 and Vista to see how they stack up. The numbers say that the two OS’s are actually pretty close to each other, but they say that generally Windows 7 feels snappier.

kill frozen apps.jpgKill All Non-Responsive Apps
If you have a problem with applications becoming non-responsive you may want to look into this shortcut you can create that will kill all the programs that are currently frozen.

binary clock.jpgBinary Clock on Your Desktop
This clock/alarm clock combo app is something real geeks will probably enjoy. Once installed it will show a binary clock on your desktop, but it will also display the digital representation underneath it. If you get good at reading the binary you can go ahead and remove the digital numbers and stick to purely binary.

motion detection.jpgFree Motion Detection Program
Want to know what’s going on at your home when you’re not there? Just hookup a webcam to your PC, grab this free app, and let it keep an eye out for any motion. When it detects movement it will start capturing images, which can then be uploaded to an FTP location.

Apple retires 99-cent TV show rentals from iTunes, Apple TV

If you’re stuck at home for the weekend like many of the people along the East Coast are due to Hurricane Irene, you may have thought to yourself that everything would be fine as long as you had your trusty 99-cent iTunes TV rentals, you may be disappointed to find that Apple has removed that […]

Google remains committed to TV business, expects more partners soon

Wondering what Mountain View has in store for Google TV — that half-baked content platform available on only a small handful of devices? Well, it’s not going away, apparently, and may even cross the Atlantic into Europe next year. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt is currently making waves in Scotland, giving Edinburgh International Television Festival attendees a rather vague overview of what the next generation of Google TV may look like. Schmidt said that the service has yet to take off because it’s currently integrated with (a rather limited selection of) TVs, which we don’t tend to upgrade more than once or twice a decade. He added that additional hardware and content partners will be coming soon, though, and didn’t deny that Google TV could end up on Motorola cable boxes — an obvious move, given the company’s recent acquisition announcement. With widespread implementation and many more content partners, Google TV could definitely be a hit, but with ABC, NBC and CBS still unwilling to come onboard, the struggling service likely has a very rocky road ahead before it can be deemed a success.
