Canon S100 gets early October estimate from Amazon, likely to ship ahead of November release

Canon’s high-end PowerShot S-series is a mighty special breed, so we’ve been rather excited about the company’s new S100, which we were told to expect in November with a $430 sticker price. Now it looks like the S95 successor may slip out of the warehouse a month earlier than promised, with Amazon estimating ship dates as early as October 3rd. In an industry where delays are much more prevalent than quiet early releases, this is certainly welcome news for the highly anticipated pocket cam, which packs a 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor and f/2.0 (variable) zoom lens. Shipping estimates are always subject to change, so don’t count on any miracles until that FedEx tracking number hits your inbox.

[Thanks, Don]

A week with Google Wallet (video)

Contactless payments have been something of a curiosity in the credit card industry. MasterCard’s PayPass has been around for the better part of a decade, but merchants and banks alike seem hesitant to adopt the technology required to make the system work, and inconsistent implementation adds to the confusion — particularly for customers. Google’s new mobile phone-based Wallet service has the potential to transform the technology from its current status as a transaction turkey, to a future as a checkout champion. But will it work? We spent a week with a Wallet-enabled Nexus S 4G, using the device to pay whenever we encountered a MasterCard PayPass terminal. Unfortunately, that wasn’t often enough, limiting us to just a handful of transactions in the first week. Still, with Google just beginning to roll out the service and only a limited selection of launch partners ready to go, it’s impossible to deliver a complete verdict just yet. Jump past the break for an inside look at Google Wallet, including a video of the service in action, and a brief look at what the world of contactless payments may look like in the future.

Google Wallet: The Future of Money Is Here, Sorta

“Whoa, how did you do that?” I didn’t say anything when the clerk at Duane Reade—or was it Walgreen’s?—asked me how to pay. I just smashed my phone into the PayPass terminal. Money poured out of my Nexus S, and into somebody’s corporate coffers. Magic! More »

Sling shows off SlingPlayer app for Honeycomb tablets

Sling’s had a SlingPlayer Mobile app available for Android for some time now, but it looks like Honeycomb users will soon have a version tailored just for them. While there’s still no word on an exact release date, Sling has just posted the demo video above, showing what seems to be a fairly polished app running on a Motorola Xoom. According to Sling, it’ll run the same $29.99 as its other mobile apps, and the company will gladly take your email address now if you’d like to be informed the moment it’s released (hit the source link below to sign up for that).

Make Your Own RC Car From Screwdrivers

Make Your Own RC Car From Screwdrivers

Everyone wants to have that enormous RC car that they can drive around but now it is time to make a smaller RC car out of screwdrivers. I Make Projects has put together a wonderful tutorial that will show you how you can make your very own screwdriver car!

It takes a lot of imagination and two cordless screwdrivers that will power this two-wheel vehicle! It sounds so simple:

This is a radio-controlled vehicle made from two cheap, cordless power tools with wheels attached. The electrical control part consists only of an old R/C controller, two servos, and 4 microswitches. Since I had most parts already in my part bins, it cost me about 20$ to build.

I guess if you have a lot of free time on your hands this might be something to do. Remember that when you go to show your friends the cool car you made that they will probably think you are a true geek and may not want to hang out with you anymore :D .

Perfection is an undeniably lofty goal, but that’s exactly what Shogun Bros. is striving for, with a freshly announced update to its Chameleon X-1 gaming mouse. Available in three different colors, the company’s “Perfect Version” of its gamepad / mouse boasts an enhanced rubberized coating for better grip, a new layout for remote control operation and, perhaps best of all, extended battery life. Mad Men on DVD Is Your Unflappably Cool Deal of the Day

I want to start a cult. In this cult, we would drink until we couldn’t see straight, smoke until our lungs turned black and eat until we suffered massive coronaries. We would dress impeccably and never appear affected by the trials and tribulations of the world. And that’s just the workday! More »

Netflix wasn’t the first to come up with the name Qwikster, which is what they are calling their new/old spinoff DVD company. That distinction goes to a Mr. Jason Castillo, a man with an affinity for bitches and weed.

Or maybe this young gentleman is actually working for Qwikster, and he’s trying to do a viral thing? Hmm, well, here are a few highlights from Jason’s @qwikster Twitter feed.
