Droid made to work with iPod docks using unholy homemade adapter

What, our ultra-special Droid dock‘s not enough for you? There’s now another way to avoid buying Motorola’s official accessories, though this one’s a bit more blasphemous. Thijs Bosschert over in the Netherlands has put together a fully fledged adapter for his Milestone (aka Droid European Edition), which allows it to interface with docks designed for iPods and iPhones. He’s done it using mostly parts he had lying around — and a well-placed magnet, of course — though he had to resort to using the 3.5mm headphone jack to extract audio from the device. The result might not look like a million bucks, but then it didn’t cost that much either. See more pictures and Thijs’ full how-to guide at the source.

iPad Camera Connection Kit a commodity item, now fetches $100+ on eBay

Now that the USB-wielding cat’s out of the bag, it’s looking like supplies of the iPad Camera Connection Kit aren’t keeping up with demand — one Engadget reader tipped us off to the fact that the $30 attachments are worth up to $180 on eBay. A quick bit of sleuthing showed that Apple’s actually still selling the things — they’re simply backordered, with a three to four week shipping delay — but sure enough, niche e-tailers currently list the dongles for as much as $150, and eBay auctioneers are finding the kits sell for two to five times the original MSRP. If your external HDD experiments didn’t work out the way you’d liked, at least you can be sure you’ll get your money back.

[Thanks, Paul P.]

EA’s ‘NHL Slapshot’ packs Gretzky-approved Wiimote hockey stick

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first hockey stick accessory for the Wiimote — the folks from CTA naturally have you covered there as well — but it is the first to be bundled with a game, and garner the glowing recommendation of Wayne Gretzky himself. The game in question here is EA’s forthcoming NHL Slapshot, which comes with the pint-sized hockey stick pictured above (just one, it seems) that holds both the Wiimote and nunchuck — it also thankfully has a foam blade that should prevent any TV disasters. Just a gimmick, you say? Not according to Gretzky, who says that it’s actually “very realistic” and “almost like playing in the NHL” — yes, really. Interestingly, the game’s creator also seems to have hinted at future versions for Natal and PlayStation Move, saying that the Wii version is “going to be a really good test.” Look for it to be available on September 7th.

PosiMotion Helix iPhone / iPod touch gaming grip now available at Best Buy

PosiMotion certainly announced this one well enough in advance (all the way back in December), but it looks like its Helix gaming grip for the iPhone and iPod touch is now finally available, and at Best Buy no less. In case your memory needs to be jogged a bit, this $20 contraption promises to be ideal for “virtually any game,” and let you use your iPhone or iPod touch in either portrait or landscape mode — it’ll also keep your headphones from getting tangled up for good measure. Still not convinced? Then perhaps the video after the break will change your mind — chains not included.

Ask Engadget: best backpack for holding a laptop and textbooks?

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Eric, who is just about ready to ship off to the “best years of his life.” If he can find a backpack, that is. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“I am going to be attending college in the fall and am l looking for a good backpack that not only provides protection for my 15-inch laptop but also has space for accessories and books. I don’t care about brand; I want something that will last and I don’t have to replace for a while. Thanks for your suggestions!”

Look, this guy doesn’t need yet another thing on his plate when it comes time to get ready for college. The least you can do is provide him a name and model of a solid backpack for carrying around his LAN party rig and [Insert Course Here] 101 books. Bone throwing is encouraged in comments below.

Boss turns DS-1 Distortion pedal into USB mouse, changes the game forever

Any touring guitar player worth his / her salt likely owns a Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner pedal, and while he / she certainly balked at the MSRP at checkout, they probably couldn’t live without it now. And this, friends, is yet another item that you surely cannot live without… but sadly, you’ll have to. As the story goes, Boss was offering up this DS-1 Distortion USB mouse as a limited run item on its UK website, but at just £29.99 ($43), they unsurprisingly sold out in record time. Now, there’s nary a trace of the device on the outfit’s webstore, but at least you’ve got MusicRadar‘s hands-on images in the source link to soothe the hurt. What’s that? It only makes things worse? Dim the lights, grab the eye-black and cue the Brand New, please.

[Thanks, Geoff]

Project Natal to cost $149 by itself, $299 with 360 Arcade, according to latest rumors

Here we go with those trusted sources again. Edge has it on good authority that Microsoft’s midlife rejuvenator for the Xbox 360, Project Natal, will cost a cool 149 bucks when purchased as a standalone accessory, or $100 when bundled together with the $199 Xbox 360 Arcade console. That’s a mighty steep hill for early adopters to climb, but Microsoft did warn us that Natal will not be an impulse buy. An October 26 date is also proffered for the official launch, but that might shift, leaving us with the same window of expectation as before. Interestingly, the Natal name is expected to definitely change for the final retail product, which we should be learning a lot more about at E3 in a couple of weeks.

Seidio Unveils HTC Evo 4G Accessories

Seidio - Evo 4G - AccessoriesSprint launches the HTC Evo 4G on its network next week. But most devices don’t come with much at launch, and peripherals like cases, holsters, and extended life batteries are usually weeks out from the release date. Seidio wants to be ahead of the curve and has unveiled a full line of accessories for the Evo 4G, including the Innocase Surface II protective case, holsters designed for the Evo 4G that can be used with or without the protective case, and the  Innocell 1750mAh extended life battery.

The Innocase Surface II case is designed to provide full protection for the Evo 4G and is made of firm plastic that protects the case without adding significantly to the thickness of the device. The case has two interlocking pieces that connect over the back of the device with spaces in the plastic for the camera lens, speakerphone, charging, and audio ports. The case also comes in six different colors to match your style.

The Innocell extended life battery can be used to replace the one included with the device to increase talk and standby time for the device, and Seidio has two versions of the Innocase holster: one designed for use with the Innocase Surface II and one for use without any case at all.

Thrustmaster gets fancy with Ferrari Wireless GT Cockpit 430 Scuderia Edition racing wheel

And you thought your Driving Force GT was pricey. Thrustmaster is today introducing its newest gaming accessory, a startlingly expensive new racing wheel designed to give PlayStation 3 and PC gamers the chance to feel as if they truly are screaming ahead in hopes of being first to fly under the checkered flag. The Ferrari Wireless GT Cockpit 430 Scuderia Edition is a complete wireless cockpit ensemble, requiring far more space than an NYC studio apartment affords to completely unfold, and given that it weighs 23 pounds, you may need to bust out your Ricky Bobby uniform to make sure you aren’t roughed up when leaning hard into turns. The wheel itself measures 11-inches in diameter, and it’s said to be an exact replica of that found on the Ferrari 430 Scuderia (“down to the smallest details,” we’re told), and the all-metal pedals should provide quite the sensation to those who prefer to roll shoeless. Check it this June if you’re having trouble ridding yourself of disposable income.

HTC EVO 4G will have a HDMI dock, sold through Best Buy

One of the things we bemoaned in our EVO 4G review was the lack of an included Micro HDMI cable in the box, mostly because they’re still somewhat hard to find, but that worry can now be allayed thanks to this newly uncovered HDMI dock from HTC. It will work with the Micro-USB port at the bottom of your EVO for data and power transfers, but the main attraction will obviously be its compatibility with the phone’s Type D connector and HDMI 1.4 connectivity. Before you rush to your nearest Best Buy to get one, though, there are a couple of caveats. PC Mag‘s testing of the HDMI output found some TVs only recognized a 480p signal when the EVO was sending out 1080p, and a number of apps, including Sprint TV, refused to send their goods out over the High-Definition Multimedia Interface at all. Might be worth trying before buying in this case, as in most others.
