Paper-Thin Rechargeable Batteries Provide Bendable Power

Paper-Thin BatteryOne of the biggest components in any of today’s portable devices is the battery. However if researchers can commercialize their latest innovation–paper-thin lithium-ion rechargeable batteries–that could all change.

According to a report on the Chemical Engineering News web site, Stanford University scientists took a regular sheet of paper, coated both sides with a layer of carbon nanotubes and then a thin layer of lithium compound to create a functioning, rechargeable battery. These thin, flexible batteries outperform other super-thin power sources and the prototypes handled at least 300 recharges.

With thin batteries, super-tiny components and possible flexible displays, paper-based and even rollable cell phones may not be that far away.

Quirky Unveils the Trek Support Gadget-Charging Backpack

Trek SupportThere are tons of backpacks and bags that come with poorly fitting solar panels or bulky batteries that claim to keep your gadgets juiced up while you’re out and about, but most of them are heavy on gimmick and light on utility. It’s those frustrations that led the community at Quirky to develop the Trek Support, a new backpack that’s both a fully functional charging station for your laptop, phone, and other gadgets as well as a TSA compliant laptop bag that’s safe to travel with and doesn’t look out of place on the street.

The Trek Support is one of their newest products. It features a clamshell design with a large main compartment and zippered outer pockets for valuables, and is made of durable, waterproof nylon that keeps the interior dry. Inside the Trek Support is a padded nylon board with mesh pockets that can fit a 15″ laptop, and up to three other gadgets like an eReader, mp3 player, or camera. At the bottom of the boars is the rechargeable battery that connects to and charges your devices over USB.

Quirky is unique in that its user and design community is responsible for coming up with product ideas, financing them with pre-orders, and then releasing them to the public for general purchase. The Trek Support is currently in the pre-order phase, and if interest is high enough Quirky will manufacture it for broader sale. You can pre-order one now for $130 list price.

VIZIO’s 7-inch portable VMB070 Razor LED TV now available

The first of the portable edge lit LED TVs from VIZIO that were announced at CES is now shipping, as the 7-inch VMB070 is available at the company’s online store and Wal-mart stores everywhere. In case you’ve forgotten, it’s still a 1-inch thick, 1 pound 800×480 resolution LCD screen with edge LED lighting that can tune into 1080i or 720p ATSC broadcasts through a flip up antenna, packs a battery with a claimed 3.5 hours of life and display video from a composite input or pictures via USB. You’ll have to wait for the step-up 9- and 10-inch models if features like ATSC M/H tuning for viewing on the go or HDMI inputs are a necessity but with its $159 MSRP some cuts may be excusable to avoid running down your cellphone / laptop battery watching Slingboxed broadcasts at the tailgate party or out in the backyard on Saturdays and Sundays.

Energysport Concept Charges Gadgets while you Bike to Work

EnergySportIf you’re a city-dweller and rely on your bike to get around town, or just like to get some exercise by pedaling around a local park or your neighborhood, the Energysport concept generator could potentially help charge your phone and other gadgets when you get to your destination. The generator and battery would mount on the back of your bicycle and harness some of the energy you put into your bike to power your electronics, and when you get to your destination you can pull the battery pack out of the generator and plug in your devices to it for some extra juice.

The Energysport is just a concept right now, but it’s the kind of design that makes sense. You put a lot of energy into keeping your bike moving when you push those pedals, why not take a fraction of it to charge up a battery so you don’t finish your trip only to find out your phone’s battery is dead? In addition to being a healthy way to power up your gadgets, the energy would be completely renewable too; as long as you keep riding your bike, that is.

First biofuel cell successfully implanted into living creature, living creature to be implanted into The Matrix

While miscreants are harvesting organs from unsuspecting tourists, researchers are busy harvesting energy from the human body. One promising tech that could power future generations of implanted medical devices is the Glucose BioFuel Cell (GBFC). In fact, a team of researchers have created the first known GBFC to function inside a living body — 11 days inside “Ricky” the lab rat’s peritoneum, to be exact. The small device produced 2 microwatts of power over several hours, achieving a peak energy density of 24.4 microwatts per milliliter. The study concludes that a larger GBFC could be used to power a standard pacemaker (requiring ten microwatts of sustained power) yet still be smaller than the batteries in use today. Co-author Serge Cosnier of the Université Joseph Fourier says that an improved GBFC could even power biosensors like the ones proposed for insulin pumps. Until that day arrives, click through for the before- and, um, organic after-implant pics. The fact that the rat’s body had coated the GBFC device with tissue and newly grown blood vessels is proof that the body had accepted it for glucose and oxygen processing.

P.S. That’s the Engadget Lolrat, not Ricky, pictured above. Ricky was apparently unharmed… this time.

Panasonic’s Evolta robot plans 500km trek to sell batteries

So you’re Panasonic and are looking for a way to prove that your batteries really are the longest lasting batteries in the world — what do you do? Enlist the help of a robot to do the dirty work, of course. Just like last year, the company is sending its Evolta-powered bot on a long-distance trek, this time in an attempt to crush the previous endurance record of 23 kilometers by traveling the full 500 kilometers from Tokyo to Kyoto. If all goes as planned, the trip will start on September 23rd and end on December 10th — hey, nobody said being a robot mascot was easy.

Mophie’s Juice Pack Powerstation is smarter than you think

You’re probably wondering why Mophie has apparently crafted a device that’s not also a case. Believe it or not, you actually aren’t living in a parallel universe, and this is — in fact — the outfit’s first product made compatible with other USB devices. The Juice Pack Powerstation is most obviously targeting heavy iPad users, but the beastly battery pack is quite capable of rejuvenating your PND, PMP or smartphone provided you have the necessary cabling. Most interesting, however, is this unit’s ability to automatically switch between desired mAh charges, including 500 mAh, 1A and 2.1A, while a standby toggle switch ensures no drainage when it’s idle. There’s also a USB pass-through so users can charge a device and the Powerstation simultaneously, and if you’re interested, all 3600mAh can be yours starting today at $99.95.

Kensington’s PowerBack kickstand case doubles as iPad battery pack

At this point, the only thing standing between you and one of many, many iPad cases is your indecision. In other words, it’s not for lack of choices. But Kensington has managed to concoct something interesting here in the PowerBack, which is effectively a Juice Pack for your iPad. At first glance, it’s simply a kickstand-infused case used to protect the back and sides of your dear tablet, but the integrated 4400mAh battery pack provides up to five extra hours of juice should you actually decide to prove Steve wrong and read for over ten hours. Surely it’s worth the $129.99 just to say you told him so, right?

Apple Peel 520 coming to US shores shortly for an undisclosed amount

Build it, and they will come. We suspect the same is true with shipping papers. Go Solar USA most certainly hopes so, as it has just inked a deal with Chinese developer Yosion to bring the much-hyped Apple Peel 520 to the US of A. For those unaware, this slip-on case effectively turns your iPod touch into an iPhone, as it equips your PMP with a SIM card slot and the software needed to make / receive calls and texts. Granted, it’s not without its flaws, but for “around $60,” it’s not a half-bad alternative to handing over your cellular soul to AT&T. Both companies have reportedly agreed to work together to distribute it in the United States, but it’s unclear when those shipments will start and how much it’ll retail for once it arrives. Oh, and don’t hold your breath for compatibility with the latest and greatest touch — just sayin’.

Mophie’s $80 Juice Pack Air ships to power-hungry iPhone 4 owners

My, how far we’ve come. Believe it or not, Mophie’s Juice Pack pack is in its seventh generation of product development, with the latest ‘Air‘ supporting Apple’s polarizing iPhone 4. For those unaware, these cases nearly double the battery life of the phone they’re wrapped around, and better still, it acts as protection against drops and dropped calls. Fancy that! This little guy is said to provide up to six extra hours of 3G talk time, 36 hours of bonus audio playback or nine hours of video playback. It’s shipping now, just like we said, to those willing to part ways with $79.95, and it’s available in any color you want, so long as it’s black.
