Hasta La Gadget!

So much for Verizon being the carrier of choice when it comes to accelerated Android updates, eh? Those who selected Big Red for their Galaxy S have been waiting on a Froyo build for what feels like an eternity, with our brethren to the north already enjoying the spoils — things like Flash support and an integrated mobile hotspot. Of course, Samsung once promised that all Galaxy S phones (yeah, including the Fascinate) would receive Android 2.2 at some point in time, and while an official release is still eluding us, it looks as if the day is drawing ever closer. The fine folks over at Android Central simply couldn’t wait any longer, and they’re taken it upon themselves to wrap up the TouchWiz-infused EB01 build for all to enjoy. Naturally, you’ll need to do a fair amount of hacking to get this up and running without anyone’s consent, but all the details you’re craving await you there in the source. Bloomberg is citing — you guessed it — “people who have been briefed on the plans” as saying that Apple is hard at work on taking the iPhone downmarket with a new model that’s roughly one-third smaller than the existing iPhone 4, possibly with the intent on delivering it midyear using mostly carryover components from the iPhone 4 to keep pricing down. Thing is, Bloomberg says that Apple is looking at launching the “cheaper” model at $200 off contract, which would be the same as the 16GB iPhone 4 on contract currently. Let’s not understate the fact that $200 off contract is dirt cheap by modern smartphone standards, which means Apple would have to be using every scrap of its enormous economies of scale to pull that off. In all likelihood, in fact, it’d have to abandon the 3.5-inch Retina Display — it might be too big for a “smaller” model anyhow. The pub goes on to say that the device could’ve been delayed or scrapped altogether since its source saw the device last year, but it’s something to keep an eye on; after all, Apple’s probably leaving money on the table right now by failing to go after the midrange with a current-generation handset, so this could be its golden opportunity.

Moving on, they’re also saying Apple’s working on a dual-mode iPhone that’d work on both CDMA and GSM — not a surprise at all, really (if anything, it was a little surprising to us that Apple didn’t kill off the existing GSM iPhone 4 and replace all SKUs with CDMA / GSM ones when it announced the Verizon model). There’s no mention of whether this model would have any manner of 4G support, but CDMA, GSM, and LTE in a single phone — with at least five bands, if not more — would be pretty wild indeed.

Finally, Bloomberg says (and our own sources have corroborated) that Apple’s working on a so-called “Universal SIM” technology that would eliminate physical SIMs altogether and make using the iPhone on different networks a simple matter of provisioning, not unlike American CDMA networks today. Of course, this rumor’s been through the mill before — and has already been killed off — so it’s hard to say whether this is something Apple is actively working on or has been shelved. The device independence afforded by the SIM has been one of the chief advantages of GSM networks around the world over the past twenty years, and we’d hate to see Apple succeed in killing that off in favor of some sort of locked-up iTunes nonsense, but let’s be honest: if anyone could pull off that kind of coup, it’d be Cupertino. More on all these rumors as we hear it.

Here at HP’s ‘Think Beyond’ webOS event, Jon Rubinstein just announced that the Pre 2 will be available to pre-order tomorrow on Verizon Wireless, right in line with what rumors had suggested. You know, just in case you aren’t interested in the Pre 3 that was just announced. Too bad pricing details weren’t included…

Call us crazy, but we’re having a hard time interpreting this line of fine print in any other way:

“To activate WiFi functionality on this device, a minimum of one month data subscription is required.”

That’s listed under Best Buy’s most recent ad highlighting the world’s first Android 3.0 tablet, and it most certainly sounds both ominous and ridiculous. Hardcore Verizon followers may remember the days of Big Red crippling Bluetooth radios in phones in order to “coerce” users to purchase ringtones and such from them rather than snagging one on the subway from Tom, Dick and / Jane, so we definitely wouldn’t put something like this by the company. It’s hard to say how this will be implemented once the $800 Xoom hits retail shelves, but it’s certainly hard to believe that this is a Best Buy policy (and not a Verizon mandate). We’ll be digging for more details (after all, this could all be some strange, terrible dream), but we’ll be straight with you — we don’t like the potential implications here.

Update: We’re hearing from some Best Buy Mobile employees that these simply won’t be able to be sold without being first activated on Verizon’s network, so even though you could theoretically cancel the same day, you’ll still likely get hit with a one-time activation fee (and possibly one month of data). Then again, there appears to be typos on the flyer, so you may want to wait for Verizon’s official word before getting up in arms.

While pre-orders have been halted for the interim, several readers that got their credit card information in on time have been sent an email from Verizon alerting to an CDMA iPhone shipment en route to their residence of choice. FedEx doesn’t seem to be tracking any of the orders just yet, but we’ll check back tomorrow to be sure.
